a lot of the crab pickers were having trouble this year getting their temporary visas. today maryland senator announced that the department of homeland security does plan to release an additional 25,000 of those for this fiscal year. that will let them hire the part time seasonal workers they need to operate this crab season. gaithersburg new city manager wants to know more about the property deals between the city and some of its workers. one example a custodian living rent free. another public works supervisor rented a 1700 square foot home for $350 a month for nearly 30 years. >> reporter: it was done with a handshake to begin with. this guy's been living up here for almost as long as we have. >> if we are offering properties at below market value, then that's considered a benefit. and as such we should be

treated that way. >> public works supervisor makes about $120,000 a year for the city. good faithers burg city manager is now launching an investigation into the properties. she says she hopes to have a report of the findings to the council by the first week of september. we also have an update for you tonight on the explosion that killed a man in his own home last may. he died in the blast at 1127 46th street southeast. today the d.c. fire department ruled out explosion as an accident. fferghtss think a furnace malfunction causing a natural gas leak when he opened the door to his basement fresh air mixed with the gas built up and it exploded. three sailors sentenced to life for the rape and murder of another sailor's wife are getting pardons. they confessed to killing michelle back in 1997. they say those confessions were cohearsed. and then another man was

convicted for the same crime. and he said he acted alone. >> very significant break downs i would say about at least eleven. >> eic wilson had been released after eight and a half years in prison so he was not included in today's conditional pardon. the decision means they won't spend anymore time in jail. mother is furious about the governor's decision. new tonight a career firefighter facing charges for trying to solicit it sex from what he thought was a teenage girl. works for the montgomery county fire and rescue department. police say he responded to an internet ad posted by female police officers posing as a 16- year-old girl and mother said now faces up to ten years in jail if he's convicted. more than 130,000 current and former soldiers are being warned to keep an eye on their bank accounts tonight. that's because a laptop with a list of their social security

numbers was stolen from a contractor. the army national guard is trying to figure out why the unidentified contractor had the data in the first place. the guard is working to notify all the impacted soldiers personally. you should have heard some of the reactions in our newsroom today about the fact that twitter was down. the social networking service was attacked by hackers all day long and that kept people from sending and receiving their 140 character updates all day long. facebook says it also had some problems when all the people who usually tweet turn to their other accounts. cyber security experts say change your password, and update antivirus software and make sure you're protected. also on the technology front they've become common place, cafes where you can have a cup of your favorite brew and surf the net for free via wi- fi. some cafe owners are ready to drop the connection because people come in and surf and surf and surf without spending.

welcome back. good evening everyone. after a quiet night tonight and a comfortable night we're going to turn up the heat a little over the weekend. start with the three day trend as we always do. by the time we get to sunday we're pushing mid-90s. going to be a nice day tomorrow but it's going to get kind of

warm. at least to close out the weekend. clear to partly cloudy skies tonight. if you haven't done so already i suggest maybe opening the windows. it's beautiful. temperatures drop into the 50s in the suburbs by tomorrow morning low to mid-60s in the city. during the day tomorrow mostly sunny skies. it's going to be a beautiful friday. nice close to the workweek. high temperatures mid-80s, northwest wind at 10, sunrise tomorrow morning at 6:15. we had cloud cover earlier this evening. most has dissipated. we have a good set up for radiational cooling. we have clear sky, dry air and the winds have gone calm. those three things put together means the temperature drops quickly. the dew point 62. low 50s in the northern suburbs. the temperature 71 degrees at national airport. but it's already dropped into the 60s in our western suburbs. 64 winchester. 69 fredericks burg. if you're watching us in the mountains in western maryland wouldn't be surprised if you drop down to the upper 40s and low 50s by tomorrow morning. weather map cold front that came through with the rain now

well off the coast and high pressure is moving in from the northwest. really nothing going on upstream in the ohio valley. we should stay quiet tomorrow. thunderstorm activity in the northern plains. that's an indication of what we may start the weekend with. jet stream going to move way up into the southern part of canada. surging northbound out of the carolinas, we could see a couple thunderstorms on saturday and then the warm air will settle in. it's going to be dry on sunday and monday. expect high temperatures still in the mid-90s. and if you add in a little humidity, the heat index will certainly be up around 100 degrees both days. it's not going to stick around. if we get a little heat it will go fast. showers and storms and cooling off into the 8 0z. beautiful day tomorrow and then warm over the weekend. maybe a little rain on saturday. but i think for the most part it will be dry. >> thanks. in i living well tonight good news for parents living east of the an cost ya river.

going to be a new e.r. dedicated to kids. ground was broken today for the new pediatric emergency unit at united medical center. the district is paying $11 million of the $14 million total cost. that's part of a push to bring better medical care to certain neighbors. they have to be stabilized and transported across town to children's national medical center. soon childrens doctors will staff this e.r. >> nobody wants to go to the emergency room to begin with but the idea you have to come across the river oftentimes public transportation when you're already dealing with just a general stress of vialwi sick. >> the expected completion date is mar of next year. 16 candles. the breakfast club, ferris' day off. vacation movies. all of them. films written or produced by
