sales tax holiday this summer. it started at midnight in virginia. armando trull is live with more. >> good morning. i'm here at the wal-mart with an example of some of the things you can safe on if you want to take advantage of your tax holiday. for example, on school supplies, as long as they are not more than $20, things like binders, bags, glue, calculators, pro tractors, anything that is a back to school supply you can get a break as long as it is not more than $20. and also for clothing and it is very wide, sneakers, boots, belts, hats, scarfs, ties, shorts, even things like beach wear, lingerie, girdles all of these things are included in the tax break. my rye -- my assistant bob has

fighting an effort by republicans to make the virginia governor's race a referendum on his administration. the president appeared to support democratic candidate deeds in tysons corner. for the first time in decades, virginia turned blue in last year's election. president obama defended his first few months in office. >> when i walked in we had a $1.3 trillion deficit. that was gift wrapped and waited for me when i came in to office. >> this is an important election and we're back here today. >> reporter: deeds hopes the president's appearance moves his poll numbers. he is trailing mcdonnell but it remains to be seen whether virginia in 2009 will be as blue as virginia in 2008. time for our first "living $mart" report of the morning.

pickers that come from mexico each year have been trouble getting visas. yesterday senator barbara mccull study announced the department of homeland security will release 25,000 visas this year. that will allow the crab industry to hire part-time seasonal workers they need to operate. a local congresswoman hosted a forum on president obama's health care plan. donna edwards listened to constituents at a meeting at oxon hill. while fireworks didn't erupt at this forum as others in the country, the attendees were still emotional. >> my daughter is a special needs child. she is 5 years old and does not walk or talk. >> straighten out medicare and medicaid. people don't want to have insurance ought to have the right not to have insurance without being fined. >> reporter: many others shared their stories of struggling to afford health care.

the men confessed to killing a woman in ' 97 but say their confessions were coerced. another man, omar ballard was convicted for the same crime and he says he acted alone. an alaska airlines jet bound for national airport made an unscheduled stop in los angeles. the federal aviation administration said the tire blew on the 737800 during takeoff on thursday. the jet landed without incident. firefighters in utah are trying to keep the salt lake city airport open. brushfires are burning in the area and one runway has been shut down. they closed interstate 80 when the flames got a little too close. a big scare for the millions of people on twitter. details on the havoc done by hackers coming up in what's on the web. an emerging pattern that may help us on the east coast is creating an animal emergency on the west coast. it is nine after the hour.

for the 2009 season. instead of calling for nine to 14 named storms they now believe there will be seven to 1. it started june 1st and runs through november. the change is because of a forming el nino in the pacific which depresses storm formation. but the same el nino is taking a toll on sea lions. the warmer water drives the fish sea lions eat out to sea. they are trying to save pups that are starving because they can't venture far enough out to eat food. >> and with the el nino winds -- we're not out of the woods and even if we get one that makes land fall it is a bad season. >> if it is one like andrew it is really bad. >> talk to people in homestead

at schoolsville. early morning traffic but no major delays. that's the traffic. now, over to you. >> thank you. we are expecting new details about a fire that destroyed a home of a former dc school board president. mayor fenty and city officials will release a report on last week's chain bridge road fire. the mayor and council called for a review of water pressure issues following the huge mansion fire where it took firefighters a couple of hours to get adequate water pressure to douse the flames. another followup to a story we told you about in may. the dc fire department ruled the explosion that killed a han -- a man in his home an accident. investigators think a furnace malfunctioned causing a natural gas leak. when mr. mccoy opened the door to his basement, fresh air mixed with the gas that had built up exploded. mayor fenty signed
