spending is what powers the economy. the senate pumped another $2 billion in to cash for clunkers, just in the nick of time. the popular rebate program would have run out of gas without new funds. president obama plans to sign the measure today which could allow and another 500,000 of your neighbors to trade in their gas guzzlers were for more fuel efficient funding. with the government funding it should be good through labor day. sonia sotomayor's is expected to be sworn in torn as the first hispanic supreme court justice t. judge sonia sotomayor will be the third women to serve on the bench. she replaces retiring justice david suiter and it's not expected to change the court's ideological split. every minute of judge sonia sotomayor's confirmation hearing was followed by hispanic communities around the country. in her hometown of new york, her confirmation was celebrated

those helping to harvest blue crabs from the chesapeake bay this year. we told you in march that many crab pickers that come from mexico every year are having trouble getting temporary visas. yesterday the maryland senator said the department of homeland security plans to release an additional 25,000 visas for this fiscal year. that will let the state's crab industry hire the part-time seasonal workers they need to operate this crab season. a little publicized perk for city workers is under the scope of gaithersburg new city manager. angel jones wants to know more about the property deal between the city and some workers. one example, a custodian living rent free in a building owned by the city and another is a public works supervisor who rented a 1700 square foot home for $350 a month for nearly 30 years. >> it was done with a hand shake to begin with. this guy's been living up here

montgomery county public school system for over 30 years. when they retired, they started to talk about a group of children they always seem to notice were having trouble in school and that group was kids whose parents are incarcerated. it turns out at least one in 50 children has a parent in either jail or prison across the country. and after doing research they found there was virtually no free literature out there to explain to these children what's happened. so what they did is they wrote this children's book. it is called mommies and daddies in jail and prison. they have printed this all using their own money and they are working to distribute it all over montgomery county. it is a remarkable story and we will have their story right here on monday at 6:10 a.m. back to you. >> thank you. in the news now at 6:13. at least five people are dead after a car bombing in northern iraq market. u.s. officials have warned that disputes between minority kurds in the north and aabouts over

animal control experts had to be called to the scene of a fire in alexandria. that's because fire crews discovered potentially dangerous snakes inside of a home in the 5700 block. only six survived. the snakes are not poisonous and are illegal to own. no humans were hurt in the fire. investigators are trying to determine how it began. >> welcome back to 9 news now. it is 6:28. howard is enjoying a beautiful morning on the weather terrace.

bags, crayola crayons and markers, notebooks, protractors and come passes, calculators and of course a lot of art supply and even musical instruments and not pay taxes if they are used for school courses. you can buy, there is a $20 limit on school supplies and you can also buy clothing. there's a $100 limit on clothing and of course all of the things you would expect thick things like shorts, accessories, belts, ties, scarves, beach wear sportswear, all kinds of shoes, hats, boots, and even things like lingerie and girdles. now, the one thing that is not on the list is electronics, things like computers but stores like wal-mart say they will also give you a tax break if you buy these kinds of items. and as we said the tax break holiday continues until midnight on sunday, but get your wallet out and get on down to the stores. reporting live i'm armando trull trull.

back to you. new this morning, intelligence officials in pakistan are trying to confirm the death of the country's top taliban chief. u.s. and pakistani officials are saying ma pseudomay have been killed in a cia-targeted missile strike earlier today. the report of his death are based on communication intercepts. his death would be a huge blow to activity in he region. he has been responsible for a campaign of violent suicide attack and assassinationses against pakistan's government. three sailors sentenced to life for the rape and murder of another sailors life are getting conditional pardons from governor kaine. they confessed to killing michelle bosco in ' 97 but they say their confessions were coerced. another man, omar ballard was convicted for the same crime and he said he acted alone.

include homeless as a protected category and requires the mayor to create a gang and crew intervention group to work on combating files. new this morning on 9 news now, dc leaders unveiled a plan to incondoleeza rice the number of beds available this winter at sheltering across the city. the city will offer 75 more family bed and hundreds of beds for individuals. although the move is applauded some homeless activists say it is not enough. the district has seen a 20% jump in the number of homes families using city services. it is time for the living smart report. jessica doyle is on vacation but will be back next week. 131,000 current and former soldiers are warned to keep an eye on bank accounts. a laptop with the list of their social security numbers was stolen from a military

men accused in the federal terrorism case have been transferred to a jail in virginia. the six are held at a jail. in a hearing on thursday, the judge ordered all six to be held until trial but he also questioned the strength of the prosecutor's case. four philadelphia police officers fired for beating caught on tape in may have been cleared of abuse charges by a grand jury. the district attorney says the suspects were resisting arrest. although they are seen on the ground at the time of the incident. the fraternal order of police plans to fight to get the officers reinstated. a wildfire near salt lake city, utah forced the closure of 80. windy and dry conditions fueled the blaze. drivers were forced to find alternate routes because of the extreme fire damage. no word on how long the interstate will be closed. we are in for a beautiful friday across the region. 65 now. 72 by 9:00. 79 by noon. we are topping off at 85
