. hello. i'm bruce johnson. thank you for joining us. a mid-air disaster over the hudson river in new york city today. a small plane and tour helicopter crashed, sending both aircraft in the helicopter. authorities believe nine people are dead. that accident was seen by hundreds, perhaps thousands of people owl out enjoy -- all out enjoying the crystal clear day. whit johnson is live with more. >> reporter: dozens watched as these two aircraft collided. crews are still on the water searching for debris. they say there's no way anyone who could survived and are strictly calling this a recovery effort. emergency officials rushed to the hudson river saturday afternoon but there was little they could do.

>> a helicopter, the blades, there's like a big puff of smoke and then a boom a couple seconds afterward. initially it went straight down in the water. >> reporter: city officials say there was no hope for any of the nine people on board as both planes came down. >> this was virtually not survivable. >> reporter: the mayor says the two passengers, including a child and a pilot were on the board the small plane that took off from teterboro airport in new jersey. this corridor above the hudson is busy. air traffic control does not communicate from here. >> it just took a nose-dive.

you couldn't see it. all you saw was little pieces of debris. >> reporter: divers located the wreckage of what's believed to be the helicopter and also recoverl1 rd two bodies from the -- recovered two bodies from the river. the last time the plane crashed in the hudson, the outcome was happier. in january, geese flew into the engines and that accident was called "the miracle on the hudson." there was no mira call -- no miracle today. only tragedy back to you. >> thank you. >> lindsey mastis is live with more on this story. >> moments after the plane and

helicopter collided. witnesses grabbed their cell phones and began to grab twitter to explain what they saw. and some loaded pictures. this is one of the first posts. it reads "just watched a helicopter blow and plummet into the hudson river. emergency vehicles on site. the witnesses uploaded his pictures." another person "driving near hudson, heard loud back fire and tire fell in front of my car while driving. huge splash." this is the picture of that tire. he then talked with cnn over the phone. >> i heard -- i actually thought i hit something on my car and then my girlfriend and i saw a whole bunch of debris falling out of the sky, and i would say probably 20 feet in front of me, maybe closer, maybe farther. the tile fell on the road -- the tire fell on the roadway. >> reporter: and when the 1529

flight landed in the hudson, it took two days before that video appeared on the youtube. over the next two days we can expect to see more pictures of this. 17 men have been call in a montgomery county sting operation, cruising the internet looking for sex. sex. >> well female undercover posed as underage. police say the undercover officer posed as a 16-year-old prostitute on craigslist. then referred potential suspects to the social networking site, myspace. 17 defendants caught the bait, including lieutenant wayne mothershead, a montgomery

county firefighter. he along with the rest of the defendants who range in age from 20 to 50 face felony charges for soliciting sex from a minor. [ inaudible ] >> one of those defendants agreed to talk with us as long as we didn't show his face. he explained why he turned to the net. >> i wasn't getting what i needed from my relationship and i -- [ inaudible ] >> have you done this before with a 16-year-old? >> never. >> he said he's a sex addict and didn't realize the consequences. >> i didn't think i was doing anything worse than what -- than what everybody else dash. solemnly swear -- >> she took the oath twice -- the first time in a private ceremony at the high court. the second time was the very first televised swearing in. she's the first hispanic woman to serve on the court. >> i'm filled with pride on this achievement and great confidence that judge sotomayor will make an outstanding supreme court justice. president obama will host a reception for justice sotomayor at the white house on wednesday and the supreme court will hold a formal ceremony next month. the first case could come in early september. two people are dead after their small plane crashed in carroll county. maryland police say the two- seater plane crashed near a corn field near taneytown after taking off this morning. the plane went down about a quarter mile from the keymar airpark.

make it up to 95 to close the weekend. we'll get rid of the clouds that we have tonight, at least. it should be dry until maybe monday night and tuesday. this little heatwave is not gonna last that long. that's been the case for most of the summer. the shots of heat stick around and then they are gone. partly cloudy skies tonight. a slight chance for a shower or a thunderstorm as the warm air comes in. the low temperature, hanging around 70. sunset, 8:11. during the day tomorrow, mostly sunny. it will be hot and humid. the heat index will be up around 100. the actual temperatures will range between 92 and 97. the winds will swing around to the west-southwest at 10. sunrise at 6:17. we have high pressure off the east coast and this area represents the dividing line between the mild air we're in and the hot stuff in the plains

states. we're seeing a big cluster of thunderstorms coming in from the plains states. that one is dying out. but the disturbance that triggered it will zip out here tonight. we could see some scattered showers and thunderstorms develop. we can see that developing in the western suburbs. this is the leading edge in the upper levels of the atmosphere of the heat. the surface heat will get in the day tomorrow. right now, 83 at national airport with an east wind. the winds will shift tonight. the dew point, prabobe lyprobab tomorrow. elsewhere temperatures low 80s. 85 in fredericksburg. it's 96 in kansas city, same thing in dallas. it's this heat that will visit us sunday and monday. the dividing air will move north and the thunderstorms should stay in new york and

back in new england and we'll end up with dry weather. seven-day forecast looks like this -- we'll be in the mid-90s on monday with a heat index near a hundred. a cold front comes through monday night and tuesday. that should get rid of the heat. scattered showers and thunderstorms possible. but the high temperatures will foul back in the mid-80s by thursday and friday. just a few appearance by -- i'm not even going to call it a heatwave. two days that doesn't count. >> we saw the clouds out there -- the crowds out there. >> yeah, 29,000. if you are standing in it with pads on -- >> yeah, you can call it what you want. >> skins' fans, they don't care. ahead in sports, fan b
