the obama administration announces they are 90% sure that the leader of the taliban in pakistan was killed in a u.s. air strike. >> this an important moment. i wouldn't say it is a tipping point, but it certainly shows we are having some success. >> reporter: the leaders death shows that pakistan is making progress in weeding out an estimated 20,000 taliban fighters currently in the country. the pentagon has a hit list containing the name of 50 afghan drug lords connected to the taliban. troop levels are expected to increase in afghanistan. with me now is kevin whitelaw a freelance journalist and foreign affairs expert. good to have yo with us. this hit list of 50 afghan drug lords reminds me of the cards that were issued, the top ten people in iraq after the invasion of iraq by the united states. who are these people?
9:09 am
>> well, the u.s. has also had lists of various wanted ininsurgents and most of it has been taliban fighters, al-qaeda fighters. this seems to be a new category which are drug traffickers. the concern is the drug trafficking business, one of the most lucrative in afghanistan, one of the only lucrative businesses in afghanistan is helping to fuel the taliban in particular and they are trying to go after these traffickers will starve the taliban of funds that's the basic idea. >> we have had a tough time doing this. weren't these the same funds that financed -- when they were fighting the russians? >> right. afghanistan is home to 90% of the world's heroin. so at this point it is big business and very difficult to cut off. there are a lot of money riding on this and so you have various figures from
9:10 am
government officials to war lords who have a stake in this. there is concern by going after drug traffickers, you are going to actually end up creating new pockets of resistance because these are folks that may not have an idea ideological ties to the taliban but don't want their business hurt. >> tough times. they need the money. >> the question will this do more harm than good. i don't think that anyone knows yet. there have been fear of creating new enemies. >> the obama administration is asking for more time to see if the war plan is a success and they hope they will know by next year one way or the other. what is the war plan, is it nation building, are we still looking for osama bin laden there or do we think he is in pakistan. >> the key word is counterinsurgency.
9:11 am
going out and killing the taliban or in this case drug lords. the other side is nation building side. the loaded word in american politics but certainly what they are trying to do. boost the civilian effort, root out corruption and try to build up the capacity of the afghan government to provide for its people. they are having an election in a couple of days and this is about trying to boost legitimacy of local afghan government. as far as osama bin laden, the common theory is he is still in pakistan or at least in that very ungoverned border area, possibly going back and forth between each side but sloan that very unclear. >> reporter: we had secretary gates talking about maybe speeding up the process of withdrawalling troops in iraq. we understand a lot of troops maybe going to afghanistan but then you have i the general saying don't be too quick of moving the troops out of iraq and we are seeing a spike in
9:12 am
violence, but is it worse than before the troop dawe down, pull back or out of the cities, or is it the same? >> we are seeing bits and pieces. i think it will take more time to know whether this is an aberration or a blip or whether this is a trend. i don't think we know that yet but i think the recent bombings raised the question of whether iraqi security forces are capable of doing this on their own. remember, the u.s. has pulled back in to most of the big bases and trying to let the iraqis take the lead. >> this is something that iraq has wanted and something the u.s. wants, as well. it doesn't mean -- you could still have u.s. forces come out at various points and try to assist and backup the iraqis. it is happening to a certain degree. not clear if it will take fewer troops. >> thank you for your analysis. >> thank you so much. president obama is in mexico this morning. the president is making his second visit to our southern neighbor i tending meetings

drowned. fences are so important, aren't they. >> vigilance is the number one key to child safety. most children who have drowned have have been out of sight less than five minutes. you have to watch your children when they are at the pool and if you have young children and toddlers it is important to do touch supervision, you are within an arm's length of your child and if you have a baby- sitter who tooks your child to the pool, make sure they are aware of the importance of pool safety as well. >> the touch safety i understood that should be used for 5-year-olds and under. sometimes you are 5-year-old can swim pretty well. i know my children when they were 5 could but still a 5-year- old should be within touch reach, right? >> absolutely. just because your child can swim doesn't mean they are safe in the water at all. the drowning age is one to 14. and you may have an older child
9:32 am
and think that you don't have to watch them. >> my children are very good swimmers. we always have an adult there keeping an eye on them. that is true even if you have a little plastic pool you are using, right. >> children can drown in less than an inch of water. you might think you have a baby or kid did pool in the backyard perfectly safe. you need to fence it or drain it when you have a baby pool so the kids don't fall in and drown. it is tempting you hear the phone ring and you want to grab it really quick. take the phone out with you so you don't have the opportunity to leave your child unsupervised. >> what if you are lucky enough to have a pool at home. what safety measures should people take. >> take the toys out of the pool. it is tempting for the child if they see the toy they may reach for it and fall in. keep tables and chairs and things they can climb on away from the fence. and if your child is missing,

always check the pool first because in this situation every second counts and you would rather be safe. >> the jim bakker rule went in to affect this year and it is named after his daughter that drown in a hot tub in mclean, and now it requires commune pools to have dual drains, so that's what you food to be careful. >> you have to stay away from the drains. if they have long hair, tie it back, don't put your arms, legs, head in them and don't sit on the drain whether y uncoolitpo a community pool home pool or ao b. tut >> this will all be on moms tu like me.com and the family magazine, as well. beginning with the live

planning your trip is to purchase travel insurance. to abate anything like. this not only cruiseships but hotels, what they might have in case of bad weather and the trips get -- cancelled. >> people any of this travel insurance and don't think of cruises. they don't think of everything else there. >> there are a few policies you can purchase on-line that will in case of flite cancellations, in case of immediate evacuation, everything that includes health and baggage concerns that can cover you for some of these incidents. so that's a good tip. >> you also say don't make assumptions. what does that mean? >> just because a storm or a hurricane might be heading in that direction, number one, don't assume that it will eventually touchdown in that area. and number two, do not also assume that your flight is cancel or your cruise is

cancelled. a cruise has ways of veering around any type of bad weather. there are also -- they might not decide to hit an island because that's where there is bad weather. so there are ways. also it dunn mean that they will work on getting planes out of an area before it hits. so your plane might be still going don't assume your flights are cancelled. which is a reason to have the technology we have today. load it on to your phone or your computer if you are taking it with you so you can check in on your flights and see if flights are cancelled or if anything you need to know. your hotel is being shut down. make sure it is available with you to technology as much of the new technology that we have today. >> some folks when they hear about inclement weather coming their way they say i'm going to hunker down and ride through
