[ booing ] >> a mix of boos and cheers there. one piece of misinformation widely spread is that the house bill would push ill seniors to commit suicide. the independent group checked out said that is not true. the bill does allow medicare to pay for counseling on end of life issues. that counseling would tell seniors that they could ask for reseesation efforts or refuse them. many of the most recent town hall meetings around the country have included supporters of the plan who are doing their best to push back.

lesli. >> all right, thank you. here's a question that a lot of people are asking. why does providing medical care cost so much under our current system. what you see on your final bill for a hospital stay, covers more than just a price tag of the medical care you get. the american hospital association says overhead cost to run a medical center, pay administrative staff are built into the bottom line. an operating margin covers the cost of new medical technology and replacing worn out equipment. and you are also paying a sub sity to cover the uninsured and under insured patients who cannot afford to pay their own bills. >> if the costs weren't passed on to consumers, we wouldn't be able to care for people who don't have insurance. we wouldn't be able to train physicians and doctors for the future. we wouldn't be in a position to maintain the facility. >> again, that's the american hospital association. democrats set up a healthcare war room to assist members of

congress with these town hall uprisings that we are seeing and the white house started a website to debunk what the administration calls some of the outright myths about the president's reform plan. you can find the link at wusa9.com by clicking on living well. >> authorities say they captured a man accused of setting a woman on fire monday night. u.s. marshals found him in southeast washington. suray chin has more. >> a domestic fight got out of hand when 45-year-old james anderson set a woman on fire. >> it's hard to figure out or wonder why somebody would want to do that to somebody anyways. >> reporter: it happened monday night near culpeper, virginia. detectives say the 37-year-old woman was at the wheel. her 12-year-old daughter in the backseat, and anderson in e f i were fighting about, but it escalated into violence. the sheriff says anderson used some type of squeeze bottle,

filled it up with flammable liquid and sprayed it on the woman while she was driving. >> she stopped the car, pulled it over on the shoulder. as she was getting out of the car, the suspect allegedly lit a match, threw it at her and set her clothing on fire. >> reporter: the inaccident is reminiscent of another high profile case. you'll recall evett was set on fire at her workplace. she was severely disfigured. >> it is unusual to have this type of situation, where somebody uses this method to set someone on fire, to take care of a domestic problem. >> it is weird for someone tlingvit e ngosclto me and that can happen. >> reporter: anderson has beens charged with g olin at protective order, reckless endangerment of a minor. assault charges are pending. in culpeper, 9news now and wusa9.com. that woman suffered head, neck, and hand injuries. she has been treated at a local hospital and released.

the girl was not harmed. today, authorities renewed their search for the body of a woman missing for 13 years now. shakita's boyfriend is serving 15 year prison sentence for her murder. her remains are still in the fort washington region. today they searched woods in the area. so far, nothing has been found. her stepfather says he is not giving up hope. >> i know this is the area and i hope that they will find her here. when they find her, we are going to be sad to see them pull her out of the ground and all. but the grave site to go to with flowers. >> the boyfriend, michael dickerson apologized when he was sentenced this past january. investigators say he has cooperated in the search for her remains. authorities plan to search the area once again tomorrow. stashing your valuables when you park your car is a good idea and if you park in

silver spring, police want to make sure you don't forget. that's the name of a new campaign by the montgomery county police. officers were called to nine different silver spring public garages 56 times la prmonth. 17 of those were in the garage at 1315 east west highway. but it turned out that just 20 of those were for vehicle thefts. police say make sure you take down your gps, your mp3 players, your satellite radios, anything that would tempt someone to break into your car. sky 9 flew over the scene of a house fire in the white oak section of silver spring today. no one was hurt, but about 75 firefighters were called to the scene to put out the flames. it all happened this morning on symphony woods drive. investigators say two propane tanks were burning, but it is not clear how that fire started. >> an update now on that carbon monoxide leak that immediate people sick. city officials say the hotel

mother that come september she would be enrolling in the same private school that her eight- year-old brother attends. >> do you have any idea what you are going to do when you grow up? >> yes. >> what? >> a doctor. >> a doctor? wow. why is that? >> because i want to help people. >> reporter: niko's private education is made possible by a $7500 voucher provided by the congress. that same money had been promised to his little sister until the obama administration and the fenty administration decided to end the program that allows a few students from places like barry farms to attend private and parochial schools. >> now this experiment is showing no income children can x cel. >> her daughter was given a voucher only to ve it revoked. the new administration had been saying for montco, ueinrs would coinue, t buonly for students already enrolled in private schools. >> i had a letter of authorization stating that she

would get a scholarship. >> reporter: the president who i support said no kids should be in a failing school. these 216 kids will end up going to failing dc public schools when they were told to go to a private school. >> this is not about not having the money. the congress appropriated funds to keep the positions going this year and senators lieberman and feinstein introduced a bill that would keep the program going for another five years. the program has benefited more than 300 students. niko will keep his voucher through high school. bruce jonson, 9news now and wusa9.com. the opportunity scholarship program is costing about $14 million. the obama administration has been on record from the beginning as being opposed to using the vouchers for private and parochial schools. not on the minds of these kids today, they were trying to beat the heat and they did it at the cameron run park in

alexandria. just some good old fashioned fund at a pool party sponsored by the clashtives. collaboratives. a new world record for the most items of clothing collected for recycling and it was set right here with denim in dc. more than 30,000 pairs of blue jeans have been gathered at union station. the magazine national geographic kids led the effort to collect old pairs of jeans from children across the nation. today, a judge from the guiness world records certified their results. >> all of the groups working on these issues, we are beginning to see a difference and we are seeing a spike in the environmental eco consciousness of the american population. kids oftentimes are a lot more aware of these issues than adults are. >> what are they going to do with them? the jeans will be recycled and

we are looking at a rebound for the market on wall street today. the dow closed up just more than 120 points after

yesterday's losses. the nasdaq finished up. it's a crime story that reads out of a script. two well-dressed men walk into a jewelry store, pull out handguns and make off with tens of millions. but it really happened. charlie dagata reports from london. >> reporter:amateur video shows robbers fleeing a jewelry store. she gets away unharmed. then they fire a warning shot, causing panic. minutes earlier, the well- dressed men with english accents walked in the front door of graft diamonds. they made no attempt to disguise themselves as they pulled off what believed to be the largest jewelry heist in british history. they got away with $66 million worth of high-end rings, bracelets, and watches. there's extravagant pieces worn

like celebrities. >> the robbers escape almost fell apart as they sped away from the london shopping district. they crashed into a taxi on a nearby street. but they had two more get away cars waiting along the route. >> reporter: police kept details secret for a week, but then released this video to expose the robbers. >> if anyone knows who these men are from looking at the pictures, we would love to hear from you and if you know where any of this jewelry has gone. >> reporter: police arrested a suspect, but he was released on bail. he is not one of the men in the security video. authorities caught the last who hit this same shop six years ago, stealing $38 million worth of jewels. but this time, police say it is very likely the thieves have already fled the country. charlie dagata, cbs news, london. that's $60 million heist is not the biggest jewelry robbery in the past year.

. tu the front snuck through here quietltotlday. back to the west, we are seeing showers develop along 181 and we'll put this into motion. you can see these are going to cross 81 in the next hour or so. we will be watching these carefully as we go through the next two, three hours. they are west of winchester and west of front royal, but they have heavy rains and possibly some strong, gusty winds in them as they are moving off to the east at 10 to 15 miles per hour. you can see in the next hour, they will cross 81 and head toward front royal and eventually head towards upperville and paris out in loudoun county. so we'll keep you posted. right now in and around town, it's quiet. back to the computer we go. we'll talk about temperatures, which are nice. low 80s, gaithersburg, vienna, fredericksburg, 81. tomorrow, partly sunny, warm, showers and storms. 60s and 70s. tomorrow afternoon, more of the same. high temperature near 85.

and digital correspondent showed us how people lined up for their chance to be heard. >> inside a now familiar anger continues to boil over. a 440 seat auditorium at haggerstown community college. people here to grill ben cardin at another town hall style meeting. outside, a measure of the growing ground swell and an even larger crowd that couldn't get in. >> if congress would vote there, like we elected them to vote, this wouldn't be happening. >> a crowd estimated at at least 500 additional people, but also now adding to the crowd, a growing number of those in favor of reform and president barack obama. and unlike inside the town hall meetings, the two sides mixed, mingled, and engaged. >> i think everybody should have healthcare. however we pay for it. i don't think we should have a situation when somebody says, i'm sick, i need care and i

don't have the money. i think that's absolutely immoral. >> my father and mother raised me, you better get a job, you better get an education. it's a tough world out there. nobody is going to pay your rent. no one is going to buy you a car. you better be buying it yourself. >> also outside, signs, which were not allowed inside the town hall meeting. the battle of the signs included imagery suggesting soviet come ewe in communism. >> it is deeply disrespectful for the people who died. >> here in haggerstown, it appears more people than ever are now engaging. although nearly everyone here already has their mind made up. >> thanks to scott broome for that story. many protesters with signs also took up positions along the road up and down hagerstown

maryland, help comes from some four legged friends. >> kristen fisher introduces us to these unusual heros. >> reporter: this is one of the olstdearms in all of maryland. the land was ugstboht back in 1802 and has beboen in mee thea >> this was a old facc farm. the property here, the home, and the outbuildings and everything were built by my great, great grandparents. so i wanted to maintain this place and i didn't want it to be sold to developers. >> reporter: angel simmons is an only child. when her father became sick, she quit her job to save the family farm. >> my transition here was very scary. the main problem is that i'm not a farm girl. i was born and raised on miami beach and i had a lot to learn. >> reporter: the key was finding a crop she could grow or an animal she could raise on her own. she turned this tobacco farm into the largest alpaca farm. this is carmalita.

she was born 24 hours ago. >> reporter: it is now home to 90 of these animals. >> this is sadie, they are a fantastic animal that is a woman on my own. i can handle and manage them. >> check this out, this is a pile. these are so easy to take care of, that they poo in the same place, which makes it easy for angel to clean up. the best part about these is, they have allowed angels to turn a profit. >> my true heros are them, because they have enabled me to keep this farm and to make it self-sustainable. >> now angel's main profits right now come from buying and selling her alpaca's. recently, she also started selling their fleece. what she does is turned them into these blankets. now if you would like to learn

for a local town hall meeting on healthcare reform. this one in hagerstown led by senator cardin. plenty of shouting back and forth those for and those against it. police are dealing with a terrible accident that shut down ridge road in clarksburg, maryland. this is a collision between a car and a commercial van. now at least four people in that car have been hurt. a 20-year-old and three teens. we're told a 13-year-old boy is in critical condition. >> and the obama administration is ending the dc school voucher program that gave low income students the money to attend private school. we've learned that many new students who had been promised slots in the opportunity scholarship program are having their vouchers revoked. like many consumers, you probably cut back. one local grocery store chain is taking a big step to encourage you to spend more. peggy fox is live with the latest chapter in the grocery

decreased, but some commodity prices have decreased, too. we are seeing some prices and we can negotiate with our suppliers to pass on the savings. >> steve says they slashed prices in every category consumers shop most frequently, like dairy, meats, and poultry. >> it's a good idea, because i see the prices and i can continue buying here. >> not everybody thinks they are low enough. >> when the gas prices go up, you expect them to go down. now they haven't come down anywhere near as much. >> i prefer shopping. >> over giant foods, they offer low prices and sale prices every day also. >> i tend to shop at giant and shoppers food warehouse, i think their prices are more competitive. i think safeway is a bit more expensive. >> now one of the shoppers we talked to who says that the prices have not come down fast enough, she says she hasn't

been able to use coupons like she used to. she says a lot of coupons say you can have $1 off for three items instead of one. so she hasn't really found coupons very useful. still, she says those prices are headed in the right direction, down. i'm peggy fox reporting live in bethesda. thanks for that. the environmental protection agency wants to know how you think the president should tackle the cleanup of the chesapeake bay. epa officials will hold a town meeting tomorrow in frederick. the obama administration wants to devise a plan by november. there is a website where you can post your suggestions. just go to wusa9.com and click on living green for that link. overseas, u.s. marines launched a new offensive in afghanistan. as they try to take a town now controlled by the taliban, they hit so much resistance, they start to wonder if the militants knew they were coming. joel brown brings us more. >> the u.s. marines stormed

the town in southern afghanistan, trying to take back the streets from the taliban. the first wave of the new offensive left at least seven enemy dead after some heavy fire fights. marines said the resistance was so strong, they think the taliban knew they were coming. >> the taliban is controlled the province where the fighting was taking place for years. this operation sent u.s. and nato forces into the biggest town in the area for the first time. >> we free the local populous from the influence of the taliban. they are able to go through their daily lives. >> since president obama decided to deploy 21,000 more troops to afghanistan. american and coalition forces have been ramping up operations like this one, in an effort to cut off the growing power. >> commanders are also counting on this offensive to help secure afghanistan's second ever presidential election set for next week. they believe pushing taliban fighters out of cities and

towns they now control will make residents feel safe enough to leave their homes and vote. it won't be easy, taliban leaders vow to do everything they can to disrupt the elections and to hold on to those parts of the country that they control. joel brown, cbs news, the white house. >> 500 u.s. and afghan troops are taking part in what's called operation eastern resolve 2. three time, five days, engines shut down on american flights while they were in the air. all three incidents happened last week. in each case, the pilots safely landed those planes. the three jet liners were md80s. the agency considers the shutdowns isolated incidents. >> in this case, so far the faa has been aware of these and is looking into them and hasn't seen, you know, anything that looks like a trend. >> but american airlines pilots are concerned and they want a more thorough investigation.

>> now to a bit of a swap. u.s. airways is about to expand its service at reagan national airport. it's part of a deal to swap flight slots with delta airlines at new york's laguardia airport. here's what it means. delta is going to give u.s. airways 42 slots in exchange for 125 slots at laguardia and reagan national. both airlines say this will make them more period of timeable. air tran agreed to a similar deal on tuesday. scientists, activists, actors, athletes, and humanitarians, they were the folks receiving the highest civilian honor today. >> sydnie podie. >> that legendary actor is one of 16 people given the presidential honor of freedom. it was a privilege to hand out these awards today, says mr. obama. >> this is a chance for me and the united states of america to say thank you to some of the finest citizens of this country

and of all countries. >> some other recipients include legend, billy jean king, coleman race for the cure founder, and retired supreme court justice, sandra day o'coner. earlier in the day, the president and first lady welcomed the newest supreme court justice to the white house. a few hundred supporters attended the celebration for justice sonia sotomayor. she is the first hispanic justice appointed to the u.s. supreme court. as sotomayor was officially sworn in over the weekend. >> i am deeply humbled by the sacred responsibility of upholding our lawings set forth in our constitution. i ask not just my family and friends, but i ask all americans to wish me to find guidance and wisdom in administering. >> the supreme court is set to

at a time when many credit card companies are hiking their fees, discover at american express plant stopped charging customers when they spend after their card limit. the move comes six months before a new law clamps down on such fees. the law will not eliminate over limit fees, but it won't let card issuers impose the charges unless consumers say they want to go over their credit line. over limit fees average about $35. retail sales were up slightly last month and dollar stores are getting much of that business. even higher income shoppers who were never fans of the retail chain are now believers. but before you shop, make sure
