suit. the debate over health care reform. more town hall meetings nationwide have supporters and opponents try to get their voices heard. susan roberts reports emotions will be running high. >> critics angry over president obama's health care reform plan are not holding back. >> you listen to us. >> americans will have another chance to be heard today at town hall meetings across the country. democrats are trying to win over an increasingly skeptical public fed up with the overhaul. >> no one tells me how to live my life and how long i should live and when i should die. >> reporter: not everyone is out to crush reform. >> supporters are also speaking out. this woman recently lost her health insurance after getting laid off. >> i have three children i have to be around for and i need health care. >> reporter: democratic lawmakers are trying their best to get the public on board but
9:06 am
it is not easy when you talk about a bill that is not even finished. four versions are floating around captiol hill and all of the options are causing confusion on a range of issues impossible coverage for illegal immigrants to the end of life care for the elderly. >> people are putting out information that is false. >> president obama hopes to set the record straight at his and town hall meeting in indiana. organizers expect 500 people to rally outside of the event. susan roberts, cbs news, washington. these daily forums are turning in to shouting matches for both sides of the aisle. there is a new poll that looks also the actions being done in the meetings. when it comes to booing members of congress 44% call it democracy in action and 47% say it is an abuse of democracy. as far as shouting down people with opposing viewpoints, 33% call that democracy in action, but 59% say it is an abuse.
9:07 am
so we want to know what you think of this health care debate. are people getting too hite heathed and inappropriate about it or is it just democracy in action. cast your vote when you visit wusa9.com. one critic of health care reform says it is all about government control. another says the legislation being considered will just create more debt. so who's winning in this emotional health care debate? with me now is political commentator and ceo of the independent insurance agent and brokers of america. we also have democratic commentator vick camber with us. thanks for joining us. i'd like to start off on some point of agreement. are we in agreement that something is wrong with health care in america and we need some sort of answer solution. >> yes. >> yes. >> all right. so what's wrong with what is going on right now? what is wrong with the problems. people call it socialism,
9:08 am
naziism. the president has death panels that will determine who lives and dies, elderly, disabled will be euthanized, where's the truth in this? >> the information is what is, on both sides, is what is i think directing part of the anger and frustration and lack of information. the polling, whether it is democracy in action or disruption of democracy it is both. it is both. i believe it is democracy. you have the right to speak out, and a congressman and senator are no better than you and me. they work for you and me and i have every right to speak and argue with them. on the other hand, i think it is wrong and disrespectful to not to allow you and you to have an opinion and get your opinion out there. >> all of the polls have shown that support for government takeover of health care reform is going south. and you look at it is affecting the president's approval ratings, as well.
9:09 am
if the president were to shed his support for the so-called public option, i think we could agree on what needs to be done, preexisting condition issues and portability of insurance from one job to another. those are reforms that have to have. those are things that vic and i agree on but a government takeover through the public option is the controversial issue. nobody wants the government to say you will use this doctor. you have to have this health plan and are being forced to make those decisions. federalized medicine which this is a step toward, they said it is something he could support. that is not what this country needs or wants. >> having said that, we're used to having our insurance companies tell us what pills you can take, that they will pay for, what doctor you can go to. what tests you should have. so we are used to this. we have government involved in medical procedures, medicare, medicaid and we are happy with
9:10 am
it. if you ask do you have medicare hands go up and do you want to get rid of it hands go down. they would not like to think about it, because young people are invincible but seniors find it effective. >> seniors don't want any change. >> why? >> because medicare is a great system. it will be bankrupt in a few years. this is the great system that every republican voted against 20, 30 years ago. >> and it is bankrupt and it is not self sustainable. my parents are on part b medicare. they pay $90 a month in premiums. i pay cobra for my 23-year-old son it is $540 a month. it is not sustainable at $90 a month because three of us and all working americans are paying three quarters of the premiums for them. it is not a sustainable model. so when they say medicare is a model for the health plan it is
9:11 am
a model for financial disaster and bankruptcy. >> again, we have to put two issues aside. one is the question of money and one is the question of value of life. medicare is a sustainable program and a success. now, are we paying enough money for it? that's a separate question and if we are not let's face up too the reality either there is some form of taxes that have 0 to be paid, some money to be collected. i don't understand people who don't think we should pay for the services we want. we pay for garbage, we pay for mail, we pay for military. >> the president said a certain group of people would not be paying. >> there maybe enough money from those above and cutting out waste and fraud. >> before we go, i want to ask you a question about senator edward kennedy. he's being used in some ads because of his age he wouldn't be given the care he is. talk about his presence,
9:12 am
absence, rather on the hill, being part of this debate. would it change anything? gregg called him the consummate negotiator an consummate lawmaker. what are we missing? >> ted kennedy if he were in the senate would advocate for his principles. he is more pragmatic than people thought he was and not having him there hurts the left side of the senate because right now there is nobody to step in to that vacuum and say the republican plan goes too far. look at the co-op option that senator grassley and senator because cuss are working on. at the end of the day, ted kennedy want major health care reform but will not throw the baby out with the bath water. >> i would preguess what kennedy would have supported but no doubt in my mind his presence is missed. he is a force bigger than life up there. he has colleagues on the other side of the aisle that have
9:13 am
enormous respect for him. and while max because cuss is a strong advocate, they don't bring the same presence to the senate that i think, on this issue, that ted kennedy would bring. >> thanks for joining us. a lot ahead including a look at two everyday heros getting the honors they deserve. and kim says there could be a stray storm or two today. what's the weekend looking like? her forecast is three minutes away. rt

9:21 am
welcome you. >> thank you for having me. >> that name hero, you laughed at that. does it feel comfortable or a little uncomfortable. >> a little uncomfortable. >> why? >> i wouldn't consider myself a hero at all. just someone who recognizes the problems taking place in the community and would not settle for the status quo and the reason why we put the 10,000 back to school book bag giveaway together is when you hear the statistics in the area 50% of school children are dropping out of school, not just in high school but also in middle school it is starting to trickle down to middle school so we cannot sit back and talk about the problem without offering solutions. so we are creating a dialogue. we are talking about it now and as we discuss it we are helping people to become aware of the severity of the problem. on sunday we are giving away 10,000 book bags. >> we are looking at the example of the book bags. i love the message on the book

profession in football. >> tell me who are the peaceaholics. >> we work with at-risk youth and we basically want to try to deter the violence, bring down the shootings and the murder rate. >> reporter: so your opinion, given your mission, does michael vick deserve a second chance? >> absolutely. as he said, you know, he paid his debt to society and people say that over and over but the thing is we are to forgive and not judge. we have to move on. everybody deserves a second chance and it is a stigma placed over the term citizen. when you come home an return them back to society you want to return back to your occupation as well as martha stewart did. >> people are questioning his sincerity and he spoke to a group, a youth group at a church in chicago and talked about how dog fighting ruined his life. he didn't even pay attention to the plays. and initially when he was out on bail before his trial and his sentencing he was caught smoking marijuana.
9:34 am
it is like, what does it take for someone to learn from their mistakes? >> well, he's a young guy. i think he made a mistake in his life. i think he looked at dog fighting as a competitive sport and i think that now he looks and knows now the essence of what he was truly doing. he has had time to reflect on that. the times he came out on bail. he was dealing what lot of stress and scrutiny, a lot of negative press and negative blogs. so, you know, just as richard cohen, the article he had written. there was a bunch of stress he was under. he definitely has a lot of people saying he's not showing remorse, but i mean is he expected to come out and cry on national television? >> you said he -- he said he did cry every night when he was in prison. >> why are we surprised there is violence in a game that is
