we are following a deadly hit and run in southeast washington. armando trull is on the scene with details. >> reporter: good morning. as you can see right behind me the accident scene at the intersection of suitland parkway and stanton road. the medical examiner's office just left the body of a john doe, a man crossing stanton road when he was struck by an eastbound vehicle as he was crossing. the man does not have any identification on him. he is believed to be 40 to 50 years old. a man who is black but that's the only information we have on him right now. police say the vehicle that struck the man is a dark blue or black-colored vehicle with windshield damage and the passenger side mirror has been broken off. that vehicle did not stop. the impact was so great that it hurled the body of the man about 60 feet on to the side of stanton road, and police right now are looking for that

we will reach for a similar high yesterday with 87. as we said, here's kenny burns. >> good news on suitland parkway to the city. reopened within the past 15 minutes between stanton and nailer road due to a fatal accident. cars were moving at speed through that area. clear woodbridge to the beltway in springfield. over to montgomery county, now, southbound 270 smooth sailing from frederick through rockville to the capital beltway and checking routes leaving baltimore no problems on 95 or the baltimore- washington parkway. here's andrea. we start this half hour with more on the breaking news kenny just told you about. police in southeast washington are looking for the driver involved in a deadly hit and run accident. 9 news now digital correspondent armando trull is live from the scene with details. >> andrea, right now the scene, as you heard, is open. this is suitland parkway and

stanton road. now, earlier this morning, this is what the scene looked like. take a look. a man was crossing the street between 2:30 and 2:45. he was crossing stanton road when an inbound car, traveling on suitland parkway hit him. the impact was so forceful that the body of the man was rolled 30 to 40 feet. he wound up on suitland parkway. he died immediately. who was that man? police do not know. he was not carrying any i.d. or if he had any i.d. the impact was so forceful it was knocked off of his body. who struck him? police do not know. they say it was a vehicle traveling at a high speed on suitland parkway, dark blue, possibly black. that vehicle now has damage to the wind shield, the passenger side mirror is also miss iing. police do not have tag information on that car so the investigation is ongoing. armando trull for 9 news now

and wusa9.com. two air traffic control employees have been suspended in connection with last week's deadly crash over the hudson river. authorities say an air traffic controller was talking on the phone and his supervisor was out of the building during the deadly collision. according to the faa just before the crash the employee who was on the phone handed off control to another airport, newark liberty international. he also reportedly told the pilot about the transfer but they say he pilot never contacted newark. >> newark never had a transmission from the accident pilot. we need to understand what is happening during that time sequence. >> reporter: the faa says there is no reason to believe so far the employee's actions contributed to the crash that killed nine people. the pictures may not tell the whole story in the case of a suspended metro bus driver and now she is pushing to get her job back. it started with this picture, posted to a blog by a passenger

and metro immediately suspended the driver, telling the driver you can't operate a bus while using a cell phone or texting but the union says the driver was actually calling the control center because her radio had failed and she was stuck in traffic. so far metro is refusing to comment. former alexandria police chief david baker is due in court this morning. baker is facing drunken driving charges after arrested last month. the 58-year-old former police chief was pulled over after a car crash in arlington. he later resigned after 19 years with this alexandria police department. investigators in northeast washington want to know who's responsible for an explosion inside of a mailbox. several streets were closed off around the scene at 49th and meade street last night while firefighters searched the area. they say a large, blue postal service mailbox was destroyed. no one was hurt. president obama and his family head west today for a view of some of the most scenic

the montgomery county humane society is e private resc. the private rescue. they plan to sh wndownthe facility on south stone street, but it is not the end of the rescue program. digital correspondent lindsey mastis, explains. >> these three chihuahuas come from a puppy mill. >> they have a life that was just a cage. >> reporter: they need a permanent home because the private rescue plans to close. >> this is what we need to do given our current economy. >> reporter: they are waiving adoption fees and lowering the price to help get these animals a home. they say they are hoping to find foster families for the
