order before plead guilty this morning. >> reporter: from the heights of power to the depths of jail. he handed him the minimum of five days behind bars after he slammed in to another driver last month at i-66 and north fairfax drive. the officer, who arrested the former alexandria my police chief said he wreaked of alcohol and that while he said he had just two beers he failed four sobriety tests and blew a .19. nearly two and a halftimes the legal limit. >> he used bad judgment, drank too much, got behind the wheel of a car and he has paid what i think is a disproportionate price for it. >> reporter: his virginia driving privileges are suspended, resigned as police chief and will have to pay a $300 fine. he dodged the cameras here at the courthouse but put out a statement that said he will be forever haunted by personal embarrass and humiliation. he repeated his apology to the woman he hit who suffered

whiplash and had to be rushed to the hospital. >> up until three weeks ago, he was the public face of law enforcement and he would rather not be the public face of somebody who has gotten a dwi and is going to jailer. >> reporter: he warned the former chief if he got in to anymore trouble she could send him back to jail for another six months. bruce leshan, 9 news now and wusa9.com. >> the arlington sheriff has promised him the former police chief will be held separately to protect him from other prisoners. sky 9 over the scene of a five car pileup this morning. i happened near broken land parkway in columbia. one vehicle landed on top of another one. you can see it there. as bad as it looks only minor injuries were reported. the highway was shut down a while earlier today but reopened tonight. right now police are looking for the hit and run driver who killed a man this morning. the crash happened near the intersection of stanton road

and suitland parkway in southeast washington. the man, the victim was thrown, some 0 feet from the point of impact. investigators are looking for a small, dark-colored car with a damaged windshield that is missing the passenger's side mirror. an explosion of a mailbox at the corner of 499 and meade. no one was hurt. no word on what caused the egg explosion at this point. a followup on a charles county judge whwho admitted to deflating the tire of a car parked in a restricted area near the courthouse. the journally has resigned as chief administrator of the circuit court but not stepping down from the bench. he made no reference to the tire incident in the letter he submitted regarding his decision. we have an update regarding last night's car accident involving olympic champion michael phelps. baltimore police say the other driver was at fault. police say the other driver ran

a red light and crashed in to his cadillac escalade suv. phelps was not hurt in the crash but an unidentified woman was take on the the hospital as a pre-- precaution. police came up empty today for the past three days police have been digging in old fort road where bell's boyfriend said he left her body. searchers found a shoe relatives say belonged to her yesterday. police are yet to comment on that discovery. president obama is out west hoping to ease worries about his $1 trillion plan to overhaul the health care system. the president wrapped up a town hall meeting in montana and manuel gallegus is there. salesman in chief is talking about health care reform. >> president obama is using his

own town hall meetings to beat back the fiery opposition boiling over in other town halls across the country. >> fight against the fear. this is not about politics. this is about helping the american people. >> reporter: while montana voted for president obama's rival in the last election and usually casts a wary eye toward washington we were hard-pressed to find ticket holders who didn't support a health care overhaul. >> i trust the government far more than private insurance companies. >> reporter: tickets for this town hall were distributed on a first come, first serve basis. most of the southing was reel gated far away from this hangar outside of the airport. >> what do we want health care when do we want it now. >> reporter: 500 demonstrators for and against health care reform staked out ground nearby. >> no one knows what is on the bill. >> reporter: many hope the president can better explain what is in the legislation and redirect the tone of the

two air traffic controllers are now suspended as part of the investigation in to the deadly mid-air collision over the hudson river of a plane and a chopper. a charles man sew devotee that tried to kill president ford. now 20 years later she makes news again. with t story just ahead.

now out of prison. lynette "squeaky" fromme was serving a life sentence but as teri okita reports from los angeles, the 60-year-old was released early for good behavior. >> reporter: lynette "squeaky" fromme is a free woman for the first time in more than three decades. officials release the former charles manson disciple from a prison. she was 20 years old when he tried to assassinate ford. secret service agents grab her gun and the president was unhurt. in ' 99 mr. ford made a return trip to the city. >> when i drove by the place where lynette "squeaky" fromme tried to take a shot at me, and obviously it was interesting. >> reporter: lynette "squeaky" fromme who is one of charles manson's earliest and most devoted followers said she targeted the president because she wanted attention for a new trial for her leader.

manson and several other followers were in prison for the grisly murders of nine people, including actress sharon tate. those killings, 40 years ago this week, shocked l.a. lynette "squeaky" fromme was not connected to the murders but was convicted of trying to prevent other followers from testifying against manson and refused to testify herself. >> she believed his name was die vine. he was man's son. she really did. >> reporter: the lawyer guinevere what hasn't talked to her in years but believes her loyalty is strong. >> i think she will be advocating for manson still. >> reporter: she once carved an x in her forehead after manson did was granted parole last summer but serving time for an ' 87 prison escape. the 60-year-old is free to start anew but may find it difficult to live down her checkered past. >> manson is currently serving a life sentence in california. two air traffic controllers

on duty during the deadly midair collision over the hudson river are now off the job. they were suspended with pay after investigators learned one was on the phone with his girlfriend. the other, his supervisor, wasn't even in the building. the faa says while the controllers ' conduct is unacceptable, it probably didn't contribute to the crash. >> you talk about places like hudson, these are error zones that are carved out for pilots to fly in with very little in terms of regulations, and safety really is dependent upon each individual pilot and not air traffic controllers and not the aviation bureaucracy. >> reporter: the small plane carrying three people collided with a tour helicopter carrying six people. all nine people were killed. overseas in taiwan, roughly 500 people have been killed after floods and mudslides unleashed by last weekend's typhoon. taiwan's president say it is

welcome back. from michael sink an apology and a pledge. at a news conference in philadelphia vick said he was sorry for the dog fighting ring that put him in prison. he promised to crusade for animal rights and he thanking the nfl and fans for giving him a second chance. he signed a one year deal with the eagles worth $1.6 million. from police chief to jail inmate. have had's former top cop david baker pled guilty to driving while intoxicated. the judge gave baker a five-day jail sentence. he resigned from the force just days after he was arrested last month arlington. president obama heads west to promote his plan to overhaul the nation's health care system.

paralyzed from the chest down but the injury is not stopping him to pursue his dream to attend virginia tech and become a sports writer. >> i got an early decision and from that point on it is like what do we need to do. >> his parents weren't surprised he wanted to be a hokey. >> i would have before manufacture comfortable with him going to george mason but it wasn't an option for him. >> they don't have football program and he needs to write about football. >> reporter: nick's dad has been his primary caregiver, getting him in and out of bed to dress him every day. they have found two men in blacksburg that will take over those responsibilities. he will stay at a handicap accessible dorm at virginia tech which is where his mom went to school. >> i hope people can look at nick and realize you can do anything you want to do if you want to do it bad enough. he wanted this so bad. so it wasn't like we made it happen for him. he made it happen for him. >> reporter: nick's dad mike says he will be staying at tech

for a few weeks to train the two caretakers and says he won't leave until he feels comfortable with them. nick has a lot of friends who graduated at langley high school with him last year. family and friends packed a cape cod church to say good-bye to eunice kennedy shriver. as joel brown reports they shared fond memories and a few laughs as they honored the woman who founded the special olympics ♪ [ music ] they celebrated eunice kennedy shriver's life in song and scripture. her daughter maria told the mourners in cape cod, shriver would also want the day to be a call to service. >> she would ask each and every one of you to join her in making this world a more tolerant, just and compassionate place. >> reporter: she founded the special olympics inspired heby the struggleof hesi r erst rosemary, who was

illegally used to try to cover up that. the president gave a rather unique interview yesterday at the white house. 11-year-old damon weaver became an internet sensation during the 2008 presidential campaign. he landed an interview with the president after his elementary school in canal point, florida launched a letter writing campaign. we were asking the president about a variety of topics from education funding to what to do about bullies to what he would do to make school lunches better. this morning on the cbs "early show," harry smith asked him about his impression of the president. >> well, president obama was nice. he gave good details and very proud person and he -- i expected him to be like he was. >> wow. well, damon, get this, he already has a full scholarship to albany state university in georgia. it sounds like a scene out of thelma and louise but this story has a happy ending.

two western illinois women were doing sighted seeing in missouri when they mistakingly drove through a wooden guardrail and over a 30-foot cliff. fortunately the car was stopped by a tree. >> i was praying, yeah, i was. >> and i think that's why we came out okay because god got us out safely. and we could hear the sirens within a few minutes and i knew they would be rescuing us and they have been wonderful. >> reporter: neither of the women suffered serious injuries. the driver said she wanted to show her friend the dramatic view but she accidentally hit the gas instead of the brakes. police have arrested a western pennsylvania woman and her boyfriend for allegedly forcing the women's young sons to fight each other at least 20 times as the couple watched. the six and nine-year-old tell authorities their mom's boyfriend says the fights were design today toughen them up. a 50 year run in the heart
