good. ing. a harsh reminder tonight of how much drinking and driving can cost you. sand's police chief has already lost his job and now he will be serving five days in jail. the judge gave him a few hours to get his things in order after pleading guilty this morning. >> who would have thought at his swearing in three years ago it would come to this. in a soft voice he told the judge he was guiltying enough to blow .19. nearly 2 1/2 times the legal limit. and then getting behind the wheel of an unmarked city car. he slammed in to another driver at i-66 and north fairfax drive

last month. the judge sentenced him to five days in jail, fined him $300 and suspended his driving privileges. >> the way dave sees this is that he is supposed to be a role model. supposed to be an example. he made a mistake and he should pay the appropriate price for it. >> reporter: former chief baker ducked the tv cameras here at the arlington courthouse but put out a written statement in which he said he will be forever haunted by personal embarrassment and humiliation. the repeated his apology to the woman he hit who suffered whiplash and had to be rushed to the hospital. >> up until three weeks ago, he was the public face of law enforcement and he would rather not be the public face of somebody who has gotten a dwi and is going to jail. >> reporter: the judge warned the former chief if he gets in anymore trouble in the next year, she can send him back to jail for another six months. in arlington, bruce leshan, 9 news now and wusa9.com.

old to the detention center when he used his handcuffs to attract the deputy champagne climbed out a window and ran away. he had been convicted of felony theft and he faces additional charges including attempted murder. we still don't know the i.d. of the person killed by a hit and run driver. the man was struck this morning near the intersection of stanton road and suitland parkway in southeast washington. police are looking for a small dark-colored car with a damaged windshield. the vehicle is also missing the passenger side mirror. check out this accident in colombia, maryland today. five cars were involved in a crash on route 32 near broken land parkway. one vehicle ended up on top of the other. the good news is the people involved reported minor injury the road was closed but traffic is flowing again tonight. fairfax county is postponing this weekend's pet adoption event after a canine flu outbreak. the fairfax county animal shelter says it can confirm two

dayses of the flu at west ox road. 29 other animals may have been exposed. the shelter's director says it is contacting people that recently adopted pets from the facility. >> anyone who was here recently and brought the animal home they should observe a pet. if they exhibit symptoms of sneezing and coughing, i would recommend they contact the veterinarian and let them know about the possible exposure and ask to be seen. >> reporter: so far one report of an adopted dog developing symptoms. they expect to be urn quarantine for two weeks to be safe. the h1n1 flu virus is expected to start to spread again this fall. maryland is formulating a plan to immunize millions of people for free or for a small fee. pregnant women, health care workers, young children and people under 65 with chronic health problems would be immunized first. a state spokesman says no one will be denied a shot because they are unable to pay.

one-time army reservist who was at the center of the abu ghraib scandal will not deliver a lecture in dc tonight. lynndie england was supposed to discuss her biography at the library of congress but it was cancelled due to staff safety concerns. an employee group at the library said it received numerous protest letters. two air traffic controllers are suspended tonight following last weekend's midair crash over new york's hudson river. the faa says one of the controllers was on the phone with his girlfriend when the small plane crashed in to a tourist helicopter. his supervisor is also in trouble because he was out of the building, which against the rules. both controllers will be paid during the investigation. montgomery county is hoping you can help to find a man investigators believe is behind two bank robberies. this is a picture of the suspect during a robbery yesterday in glenmont. police say the man walked in to a chevy chase branch on randolph road, implied he had a gun and demanded cash. that man was supposedly working

the district says wish list let its corporate registration lapse. the tennis and learning center is considered one of the premier recreation facilities. it opened in 2001. they have 30 days to leave the property. the ocean city fire marshal says random inspections of hotels had nothing to do with a carbon monoxide leak earlier this week. three people were treated after falling ill at the americana hotel. they are closed while they look for the cause of the leak. the americana had no carbon monoxides detectors even though they are required in all city motel and hotels. today marked the first time our region saw concrete results of the president's plan to stimulate the economy through green jobs. this is the first graduating class for the green job corps. the program teaches students to winterize homes, businesses and

church to say good-bye to eunice kennedy shriver she passed away on tuesday. hour daughter maria told the crowd her mother would have wanted them to celebrate her life with service. >> she would ask each and every one of you to join her in making this world a more tolerant, just and compassione.e acpl >> reporter: eunice kenne shacriver founded the special olympics. her life's work was symbolized by an olympic torch lighting ri thfoe way r war hecasket. her brother ted, r who is battling brain cancer was too sick to attend. eunice kennedy shriver was 88. thousand of mourners lined the streets of jacksonville to pay their respects to the first person to die in the gulf war. scott speicher was shot down in iraq in ' 91 but his remains weren't discovered until earlier this month. virginia gubernatorial candidate nominee that is bob mcdonnell is in our area tonight. at the bottom of the hour he will address the republican

national hispanic council in tysons corner. it will be an important factor in the november election. deeds campaigning in new port news. lynette "squeaky" fromme is out of jail tonight after convicted in ' 75 of trying to kill president ford. the president was not injured. lynette "squeaky" fromme escaped from a women's prison in ' 87 but recaptured two days lair. she will remain on parole supervision. investigators say olympic swimmer michael phelps was not at fall in a minor car accident in baltimore last night. we have just learned in the last ten minutes the swimmer will be cited for driving without a license and failing to establish residencecy in the state of maryland. police say all phelps had was an expired license from michigan. we have more on the crash and the aftermath. >> reporter: only w jay-z cameras captured miphelps

after a serious wreck in mount vernon last night. it happened here at calvert and middle. you can see a smashed cadillac escalade. the air bags went off. police say the driver of this honda sped through a red light causing the crash [ sirens ] she was taken to the hospital forker minor injuries. phelps was fine as were two passengers in his ride. back at the scene today his fans loved that news. >> that's the main thing. he's all right. that is a real tragedy. >> it is anything that would happen to anyone. natural car accident. >> reporter: police said they were investigating whether alcohol was involved and later said it was not but admit they did not give him a breathalyzer test. >> it is standard when you get in to a car accident. like if i got in an accident on the way home and make sure i wasn't drinking and alcohol is not a significant factor it would have been evident. >> reporter: once -- was the accident handled differently because phelps was involved. >> we knew it was michael phelps and we knew it was going

to get media scrutiny and we had our best people on it. >> reporter: phelps certainly got a lot of attention, especially after winning a record 14 olympic gold medals but he has had his share of unwanted press outside of the pool. in 2004 he got a dui after a trooper pulled him over on the eastern shore. and this year a photo of phelps smoking marijuana led usa swimming to suspend him for three months. >> this about celebrity, not about treating everyone the same. >> reporter: the attention for a car crash was not routine, not with michael phelps behind the wheel. >> that was mike hill again reporting. phelps is scheduled to be back at practice this week. he earned five golds and a silver over eight days earlier this month. we have had nice weather out there, topper. things going to continue? it will get a little hot over the weekend but it is august. we can handle that. and a a nice week to be in the
