lane closures on 95 because of the inner county connector and construction linked to that massive project. this is maryland's most controversial highway project, especially for homeowners living next to the construction. >> it is just an eyesore for us. >> reporter: it is an expensive eyesore, the most expensive highway in maryland. the inner county connector will cost $2.6 billion. the pace of work has sped up in the last few months with bridge abutments, trestles going up at record speed. >> we are pretty far, over 50% finished with this road an the design has been put to bed a while ago. >> reporter: it has begun to disrupt traffic on 95 where as many as four lanes a time are closed in this overnight hours to accommodate work on the icc. when complete in 2011 it will stretch from i-270 in montgomery county to route 1 in

a great white but say that sharks freak the area in summer months because it is a summer home for seals. an effort to prevent wildfires in northern california has turned in to a conservation fight. state officials had planned to cut down 70,000 trees which are considered to be a fire hazard. however, local environmentalists have held up federal dollars for the project by appealing to the government. the feds are reconsidering paying for the tree removal project. some hikers are happy to be safe and sound after their rescue from the billy goat trail in montgomery county. the hikers apartially ran out of water and called 911. they were dehydrated and couldn't get out on their own. rescue teams were called in to retrieve them and they did so safetily. marijuana as a cancer fighter. they say pot works when it comes to one form of the disease. and severe weather rocks one section of the country

country, like the capital city of kabul and cities to the north. turnout seems higher in the north. susan roberts has the latest. >> reporter: afghan president happened karzai is one of the first to cast his ballot this morning. >> this is for peace, progress and the well being of the afghan people. >> reporter: karzai, who's seeking a second term, called on afghans to defy taliban threats and participate in the election. security was tight at thousands of polling locations as residents showed up to vote. for days they have tried to intimidate voters with a string of attacks fearing the violence may keep people from the polls. on the eve of the election, the military announced six more american deaths. that puts august on track to be the deadliest month for u.s. troops since the war began. afghanistan will need a strong government leadership to

if you travel on i-95 in montgomery or prince georges county in the late everyoning or early-morning hours be prepared for lane closures because of construction work. 9 news now digital correspondent armando trull is live in laurel, maryland with more. armando? >> good morning. i am here at an area where a lot of heavy equipment has been staged but this is not for 95 construction. this is actually for the inner county connector but because the inner county connector will overlap 95 as you can see the traffic moving on 95 overnight will be affected while the icc is completed. work on the intercounty connector is speeding along. bridge abuts, testle and sound walls are going up at record speed. >> everyone is looking ahead and being as positive as we can and doing the best job we can. >> reporter: that means traffic on existing roads is being disrupted. the greatest on i-95 where as

wake up, washington. we are traveling 50 westbound from the bay bridge. nothing but green cars. we are moving at speed. more traffic in realtime on the way. at least 1 million guatemalans could suffer from food shortages after weather destroyed the crops this year. they have called it a chronic problem which is worse this year because of heavy rain. the guatemalan government has responded to the problem by distributing $7 million worth of food. public schools in pittsburgh will be closed for two days later this month when the city hosts the g-20 summit. a number of local colleges and universities are cancelling classes as well, expecting a flood of international visitors, media and protesters.
