of hay early monday morning. it is information they are willing to pay for. audrey barnes joins us now live. it is still smoldering two days later. >> reporter: the farmer who owns all of that hay that you see behind me says it can smolder for a month or more. he has to figure out a way to remove all of this charred debris without damaging his trucks or put his workers at risk. montgomery county police are offering a $1,000 reward for information that helps them catch the arsonist. >> reporter: it all looks the same to fifth generation farmer, roy stanley. surveying the damage today was his daughter. that's his livelihood going up in flames. these weren't just little piles of straw. these were huge bails and mr. stanley lost 75 of them. >> we are looking close to a

$100,000 loss. >> while he works with his insurance company to see if he is covered, police are working on catching the arsonist. >> we feel pretty safely in our neighborhood. something like this is alarming. >> reporter: investigators have now released these photos of gas cans with destinkive writing. they are hoping someone will recognize them. they could receive a $1,000 reward. >> we are asking for the community's help in helping us find out how this occurred. if they saw any activity at that time of morning. >> the straw isn't good for anything. >> reporter: it's a cruel life lesson stanley would have preferred to spare his young granddaughter, but this destruction is about much more than him. >> that's the devastating part. someone would light fires in no regard to people's property or their safety. >> reporter: and mr. stanley tells me that all of his straw was headed to mushroom farmers in pennsylvania. he believes he has enough left

on his 200 acre farm to meet this year's demand, but of course he is worried about what will happen if that arsonist isn't caught. police are hoping for a tip to help them crack this case and here is the crime solvers number to call if you would like to make it a tip. that number is 1-866-411-tips. derrick and lesli, back to you. >> audrey barnes, thank you. we want to tell you about a high-rise rescue here in the district. it happened early this morning in the 1100 block of connecticut avenue northwest. window washers were working in the atrium of an office building. >> when we got here, we found one worker was dangling 8 or 9 floors up. he had safety harnesses on, appeared to be uninjured. we had our rescue team was able to get here. we secured a safety platform, lowered some personnel down. one person down to the victim that was dangling. he was uninjured.

they were both safely lowered to a second floor area. >> and as you just heard, the worker was a little shaken up, but luckily not hurt. a dispute over a vegetable garden apparently led to a violent incident. 52-year-old anthony henderson tried to run over his neighbor sunday the small tor came natbogh me machete. apparently these two had a long running dispute. henderson is charged with first- degree assault. the charges are pending against that unidentified neighbor. and former new york giant, burris could be off to jail for up to two years. he pled guilty to weapons charges today and agreed to that sentence. burris accidentally shot himself at a manhattan nightclub. keep in mind, without that plea deal, he could have gotten 3

1/2 to 15 years. he is due to be sentenced on september 22. the ballots are being counted tonight after afghanistan's second presidential election ever. and joel brown tells us, the militants did manage to disrupt the voting at several of the polling sites. >> reporter: election workers are counting the millions of ballots that will decide the next president of afghanistan. at polling places, security was heavy, but that didn't stop the taliban. rocket attacks and suicide bombings killed more than 20 people and shut down some voting sites. in many regions, turnout was low, including the south, where incumbent president karzai was counting on votes. karzai's top challenger, abdula has most of his support in the north, where turnout was stronger. >> i want to congratulate people for their courage and determination and hopefully this will lead to change. >> reporter: the election was a test for the obama

administration's new strategy in afghanistan. the president sent in more troops to beat back the taliban, but u.s. combat casualties are on the rise. on election day, american troops helped deliver presidential ballots. security was left in the hands of afghan forces. >> more than anything, it's a matter of national pride for the afghans. their own government providing security for their own elections. >> reporter: with piles of paper ballots, election results aren't expected until saturday. the winner must get 51% of the vote. if not, a runoff election is needed and this process starts all over again. joel brown, cbs news, the white house. >> and initial reports are that the voter turnout was lighter in today's election than in afghanistan's first election back in 2004. president obama says his position on healthcare reform has not changed. that word from the president during an interview with radio talk show host, michael smerconish.

welcome back with news of a nice, steady week of gains on wall street. the dow closed up almost 71 points. nasdaq up about 20. the s & p 500 is up almost 11 points. volkswagen is recalling vehicles. a faulty temperature sensor could make warning lights show and the transmission can shift to neutral. it impacts 2009 and 2010 models of the jeta, jeta sports wagon.

robert novak. the political commentator died battling brain cancer. tomorrow's mass will be on 10th street in northwest. vice president joe biden announced $1.2 billion in grants today to help hospitals make the transition to electronic medical records. the vice president says those electronic records will improve the speed and quality of medical care in this country. and he says those records will also help to reduce the number of medical errors. just months after rejecting plans for a new hospital five miles away, the loudoun county board of supervisors is looking at a new proposal. they want to build a 164 bed facility along route 50 in loudoun county. the company estimates the $195 million hospital would create 500 new hospital jobs. if it is approved, it will open in 2015. two men have now been arrested in connection with the

robbery that took place august 6 at a london jewelry store. in the heist, the thieves got away with $66 million worth of jewels. police say they are looking for four suspects, but they won't say how the arrested men are connected with the crime. >> it looks like this week's du decision postpone the to post thpo ct. occuncy toll lanes is being onpu hold because of a budget crunch. now arlington county is fing a federal lawsuit. the suit claims improper designs at the shirlington inrc hangeswill create problems and it should not be exempt from scrutiny. the orange county virginia planning commission will hold a public hearing tonight on whether to issue a permit for a wal-mart store near the civil war wilderness battlefield. the commission already voted once in support of the

application. the orange county board of supervisors has its own hearing set for monday. it was once earned the name needle park, because of all the drug activity that went on. tonight, marvin gay park in northeast dc has been restored. a ribbon cutting was held this afternoon and the playground and the ampitheater has been revitalized. eleanor hole ms think marvin gay would have been pleased. >> if you were to ask him, i think you would hear some gratitude that the old, what was it called? watt branch park now has the name and the care this beautiful piece of green space deserves. >> this is the first public playground built in that park more than 25 years.
