. there were locations kind of running back frantically not knowing what to do. and a couple minutes later they were getting on stretchers. >> this is 9news now. thanks for joining us. i'm derek mcginty. anita is off tonight. well, you just heard an eyewitness account of what went down at kent island high school earlier today. we have plenty of new information tonight on this developing story. offialusscit joldci u 5 rte0:0 after 5:00 p.m., some football players developed cramps and nausea at that high school. the players had only been practicing for about 35 minutes before they stoth got sick. 12 -- they got sick. 12 of them had to go to the hospital to be treated. the other members of the team that were not transported did not leave the school until 9:00 tonight. this video was shot earlier today from sky nine with players being carried out on stretchers. there was a little bit of inconsistency what b what caused

them to get sick. some say it was the heat, others speculate it was some sort of chemical con sam nation. we have live -- contamination. we have live coverage with brittany morehouse who is just outside of kent island. >> reporter: that's right. i'm on kent island right now. but earlier this evening i was at the medical center where nine people were taken to that hospital. seven players and two assistant coaches. the hospital spokeswoman told me it's unclear what happened. they're still checking those patients including an additional four medical personnel who said they felt sick after treating the high school players. i can tell you firsthand all of the uncertainty, all of the drama made for quite an exciting night for family members. >> i got out of my car and ran to the field. he wasn't very coherent at the time when i was trying to speak to him. >> reporter: larry describes how he found his two younger brothers, both twins, after they fell sick during football practice. he waits for one of them who was

taken to the medical center. >> the nurse ruled out it was heat related. he said there is no way 15 people would react to the heat at the same time. so she says they're giving them an ekg exam. it checks your heart. and they're going to take them back and spray them and quarantine them. >> reporter: and at the sound of that word, chemicals, family members pick up their phone and starts dialing. then they can't get back into the er. that part of the hospital is quarantined after four nurses felt ill. >> no one is allowed in the emergency room at all. they're not letting anybody snoos including a father of one of the --. >> reporter: including a father of one of the football players. >> the cop won't let me back in. he says it's just orders he has. he doesn't know why. >> reporter: one hour later and good news for loved ones who gather inside the medical records. the er is back open and it appears to be heat exhaustion. >> they took a water break and everybody got sick and kind of started falling down or throwing up.

feeling nauseous and passing out. lightheaded. things like that. >> reporter: bottom line out here in kent island, it may or may not be heat exhaustion. you heard from that father right there. he says if it is, he doesn't blame the coaches. they keep the players well hydrated an he's confident about that. but as you'll hear from my colleague, not everyone agrees. >> the coach said i wasn't allowed to, but i would. >> reporter: and that seemed to be the norm at kent island high school today after 12 football players and one coach were transported to hospitals suffering from symptoms related to heat exhaustion. >> they said it was an emergency so we had to leave. >> reporter: john taylor was running track on the field. >> the football coaches were running back frantically not knowing what to do. and a couple minutes later, they were getting on stretchers and getting lifted out and taken out in ambulances. >> reporter: players that weren't transported remained under observation inside the school. ma'am, can you talk to us? channel 9. parents chose not to speak with

us. some even hid. but one mother tells a harrowing tail. >> last year my son did have to go to the hospital for heat exhaustion. >> reporter: from a practice like this? >> yes. from football practice. >> reporter: and was he the only one that had to go last year? >> as a matter of fact, there were maybe three other kids. >> reporter: and she had advice for the coaching staff. >> when it's very hot, the coaches need to take into consideration there's a lot of kids and they need to make sure that they have water and they can take their breaks as they need so they can have a -- to be okay. >> reporter: on kent island maryland, this is jimmy for 9news now and wusa9.com. >> all right. thanks jimmy and britney for their reports and all of that hard work. now, we received several comments on wusa9.com about this. kid dad rote this is not the -- wrote this is not the coach's fault. the kids are showing signs of chemical exposures. two coaches were also transported to the hospital. but they blame the coaches

the next three days right out of the gate. showers and thunderstorms tomorrow. probably the last hot day for a while. it may take until late saturday to get all of the storms out of here. 85. it should be dry in time of the game. then 85 on sunday. partly cloudy skies. the weekend flanking me. we'll start with the forecast in detail. overnight partly cloudy. patchy. there is a thunderstorm watch out for garrett county until about 5:00 a.m. most of the thunderstorms are north of them up in pennsylvania in the metro area will be quiet to fight. lows in the 70s. temperatures are still in the 80s. low 80s in chantilly and dumfries. now, tomorrow morning partly cloudy, very warm. 70s and 80s. and then by afternoon, here comes the cold front. we're been talking about this front all week. partly sunny, shot, showers and thunderstorms -- hot, showers and thunderstorms, a slight

chance storms could be severe. winds increase at about 10-15. here is the latest track for bill. right now winds are 125 miles per hour. it's a high end category 3. we're going to pass west of bermuda and then begin to recurve back to the north and northeast. again, i think the biggest threat for us will be rip currents. it could brush maybe the cape and maybe down east main if it doesn't turn northeast fast enough. and, again, here is a look at the wind field. the orange is 40-mile an hour winds, the red 60-mile an hour winds. and this is 8:00 p.m. saturday. so it's off shore but it will create rip currents. then it begins to pull away and it's just going to kind of skim down east maine and maybe the cape at 40-50-mile an hour winds. that changes a limb bit. that will be a did i -- little bit. that will be a different story for the cape. either way, it's going to provide us with rip currents and dangerous waves. please be advised. please be careful. and if you're going to catch waves, you surfers, need to be

advised. and i did a blog a couple of days ago about how to get out of a rip current. go to wusa9.com if you get in one. satellite picture radar combined, this system is going to pull up a lot from the gulf of mexico. a lot of us are going to get a lot of rain for our lawns. you can clearly see the eye now. that is bill. a massive hurricane. look at size of the eye. again, massive category 3 right now. as far as we're concerned, the frontal system itself is back on the other side of the mountains. it will take until probably saturday afternoon to get through here but it will give us the best chance for showers and thunderstorms. next seven days, 91 tomorrow. showers and storms. some could be heavy. some severe. thunderstorms into saturday afternoon. 85. then we get a break. temps in the mid 80s sunday, monday and tuesday we go back into the upper 80s. not quite 90 on wednesday and thursday and perhaps some showers on thursday. so i'll try to do a blog tonight.

derek and i were talking about how bill is in a very similar position to the 1930 chesapeake bay hurricane. a different weather pattern but the same condition. >> so it did come on shore? >> yes, it did. >> we don't want that to happen again. >> no. >> no. >> okay. we move on because if you want cash for your clunkers, you better move fast. the federal government is pulling the plug next monday night. it's been popular. but what did local dealerships think about the program? digital correspondent james hash has their perspective as it all comes winding down. >> reporter: with cash for clunkers ending monday, area dealers say it's been a mixed bag so far. the upside, more people in show rooms buying cars. >> it's generating a lot of sales. >> from that point it was a very positive reaction that we had to the program. >> reporter: the downside? continuing delays in processing those rebates. >> it was taking hours just to transmit one. >> just struggling getting some kind of recognition is this deal

approved, rejected. >> reporter: and those delays mean dealers are left holding the bag until the government can catch up. >> i've done almost 1300 and i've been paid on five total. >> reporter: five cars? >> five cars total. >> reporter: bankers are calling them saying, you know, how is everything going. you're getting paid on these things. >> so these dealers are getting nervous for a good reason. >> reporter: with no firm date insight, many dealers are viewing the end of the program with relief. >> the million dollar question or in our case the $5 million question is when and how long will we have to wait to have these million of dollars in our case tied up. >> reporter: but for now, the waiting continues. in gaithersburg, james hash, 9news now and wusa9.com. >> the congress had high hopes that cash for clunkers would boost the automobile production sloe down. they were not so -- slow down. they were not so quick to replace lots. well, you wouldn't want to
