>> reporter: the football team at kent island high school back on its feet today. but the varsity team stayed indoors in the field house after a wave of illness struck during practice on thursday. 14 players and three coaches taken by ambulance to hospitals. the prime suspect is heat. the heat. >> the general opinion of the doctors involved is it was heat- related illness. >> i'm happy to say the students are well. >> reporter: the superintendent of the queen anne county school says she is as curious as many parent and students that the heat may not have been oonly cause. we had all the other teams out practicing yesterday and no other team had a problem and they had only been practicing 45 minutes when this occurred. that's why we are looking at other sources. including the water use and the food, there was a team breakfast. officials say there's no

suspicion of a prank or anything illegal. >> great group of people. >> parents say they trust the coaches here. school officials say a heat management policy requires mandatory water breaks during practices. thursday's heat index combined heat and humidity was over 100 degrees. if the investigation continues and the players back on the feet, they are planning to travel to the lower eastern shore tomorrow to play a scrimmage. three firefighters were injured in a two alarm blaze. the firefighters are still trying to figure out what caused it. dc students go back to school on monday but not all the schools may be ready for

the students. digital correspondent kristin fisher is live in northeast dc where some parents are speaking out. kristin, what are they concerned about? >> well, our cameras were not allowed inside the school. you can see part of the problem by standing outside. look at these big pieces of my wood. they are covering large holes in the big exterior of the school and that's only part of the problem. parents, including the president of the pta say there are holes in the ceiling with wires coming down. the floors are not quite finished. there's a lot of boxes in the hallways and classrooms and a lot of dust and that dust is why parents say they are so concerned about their children's safety. now, a group of concerned parents held a press conference outside of the school just over an hour ago an they say they don't see any way it will be ready by monday. this construction that you are seeing right now is part of the renovation project undertaken by the dc off of public

education facilities modernization or opef income and it was supposed to start in june but parents say they didn't see any real work start until three weeks ago. joining me is one of those parents who is actually the president of the pta. clarence, you have a child that will be in the first grade. how do you feel about your student starting school here on monday. >> i'm greatly concerned about the air quality in the school come monday because there lab lot of residual dust from the construction itself. they have cut a lot of holes in the school. there is a lot of brick mason dust and probably asbestos dust in that school. so great concern is we have 380 students that is looking to return on monday and unfortunately they will be coming to school in an unsafe environment. >> thank you very much, clarence. here's what the opefn, the dc office that is running the renovation, just released a statement. this is what they said about it. they said our construction

>> good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. >> reporter: former homeland security secretary tom ridge makes his claim against two other former bush cabinet members, attorney general john ashcroft an defense secretary donald rumsfeld are. in a forth coming book, called the test of our times, ridge reports the pressure came just before the 2004 presidential election. he says that ashcroft and rumsfeld pressed him to increase the terror threat level to orange from elevated. osama bin laden had issued a videotape threatening attacks. but december site there -- despite that there was no support for boosting the terror level and he refused. i wonder is this about security or politics and he said this reinforced his decision to resign from the administration. susan roberts, cbs news, washington. former homeland security adviser says intelligence was the only motive for the change

the cash for clunkers program is running out of money and will end on monday evening. on this final weekend, the sales manager is expected a flood of business at his dealership. sales up 200% since the start of the program. over the next two days he has 75 customer appointments. the number usually over a two- week time span. his problem now he is out of stock. >> we have hit gold with the program but we don't have the inventory to sell right now. >> reporter: he has collected 150 clunkers. good for business and the environment because the gas guzzlers are off the road for good. on the down side the program has had its bumps, especially for the dealers. he is waiting for $700,000 from the government to reimburse the discounts he gives to clients. customer douglas smith is glad he squeezed in before the deadline because as a regular trade in his clunker wouldn't be worth much. >> i know i wouldn't get 3500, $4,500 for it.

>> reporter: in in spite of the rave reviews for now the white house has no plans to renew the program. cbs news, new york. you might want to add 30 minutes to any trip you plan to make on the metro's blue, red or orange lines. it will be tough out there. crews are planning to repair track circuits at fort totten station and closed 9:30 until until monday morning. there will be free shuttle buses to help you get around. bridge maintenance outside of the stadium armory station will force a lot of folks to take a different way on the blue and orange line. and then next week get ready for major delays on the blue and yellow line. metro is planning major track rehabilitation at the pentagon city station right here. expect delays up to 45 minutes between 9 listen 30 p.m. and midnight. the work is scheduled every night from sunday to thursday. metro says despite all the planned work it is ready to

>> the two leading candidates are both claiming victory. president obama made it clear the u.s. is not taking sides. >> our only interest is that the results fairly, accurately reflecting the will of the afghan people. >> reporter: tallies from the election could come on saturday. on the ballot are happened karzai, abdullah abdullah an dozen of other candidates. the millions of ballots cast are flooding in to the election commission an the agency says it is too early to tell who came out on top. the abdullah campaign is accusing the karzai camp of tampering with boxes. they said that early vote tallies show he is heading to the 50% margin of victory needed to avoid a runoff election. the vote was seen as an early test for president obama's buildup of troops in afghanistan. the president called the election successful and praised the afghan people for defying

taliban threats of violence. >> as i watched the election i was struck by their courage in the face of intimidation and their dignity in the face of disorder. >> reporter: 26 afghans were killed in election-day violence. the taliban used rockets and road blocks to keep voters away from the polls and in many areas, especially in he south, voters did stay home. there is concern some afghans won't accept the outcome if the result is disputed and fears it could lead to more bloodshed in an already war weary country,. >> reporter: afghanistan's chief electoral officer says even if there are early results tomorrow the official results will not be released until at least on tuesday. the housing market appears to be rebounding faster that than expected. existing home sales saw the largest monthly increase in ten years last month. they credit the jump to first- time home buyers racing to take advantage of the 8,000 dollars tax credit that expires at the

end of november. the burial of michael jackson is being delayed. the self proclaimed king of pop was supposed to be laid to rest on august 29th to coincide with his 51st birthday. and a family spokesperson says he will be burr rid on september 3rd instead. we don't know the reason for the change. this year's california state fair includes rides from michael jackson's neverland ranch. butler amusement purchased four of the attractions last year and the first 5,000 people in the fair on friday are allowed on jackson's rides for free. a. 12 women are trying to put their town in portugal in the guinness book of world record and they are doing it one stitch at a time. these ladies are trying to do the world record of crocheting. look at the size of that. they work on a shaw -- or it will be 39 feet by 20 feet.
