it has been downgraded to a category one. it was swamped and imhas swampe bermuda with flooding. here is a look at ocean city, maryland. hari sreenivasan has the latest on bill. >> reporter: hurricane bill blew by bermuda saturday morning. >> some people were nervous about coming here even. i don't see any flying palm trees. this is just a windy day. it's incredible just to, you know, take it as an experience to see what nature provides. >> reporter: the storm cut power to several thousand people. >> we've got no electricity. >> reporter: but bermuda was mostly spared from bill's peak winds. nasa is also watching the storm as they prepare for the liftoff of the shuttle "discovery" to the international space station early tuesday. we should see it near launch

time. >> reporter: even though hurricane bill is hundreds of miles off the coast, all along the eastern seaboard, surf's up. the crashing waves are giving surfers some wild rides. >> i'm liking the waves. it's a lot bigger than usual. >> reporter: the conditions are not favorable for swimmers. fears about potential deadly rip currents prompted many beaches to prohibit swimming. >> it's fun to watch, but you don't dare go in it. you'll be in for the ride of your life. >> reporter: tropical storm warnings are issued for the massachusetts coast including martha's vineyard. president obama and his family are scheduled to visit sunday. bill is also forecast to make a direct hit on canada's maritime provinces sunday. hari sreenivasan, cbs news, new york. the redskins faithful are heading to fedex field right now for the second preseason game, but what will the sloppy conditions mean for the starters playing time tonight? let's go out to the stadium.

hi, sarah. >> reporter: we are not on the field but here in the tunnel because let's be reel, we're getting out of the elements. weather is a major concern for the game slated to kick off again the steelers at 7:30. the field crew started to roll up a heavily soaked tarp. rain is not the issue. lightic? a concern. a couple of minutes ago, they started to allow fans to come into the stands. players are starting to warm up. so this game is ready to go at 7:30. no tougher task than tonight which is against the defending super bowl champion steelers. if anyone knows how tough this team is, it's jason campbell. he was sacked seven times in a 23-6 loss to pittsburgh a season ago right here at home. the 'skins offense still looking for are the first preseason points. they will not come easy against the steelers. >> i just want to as a group score some points and get a feel for the end zone.

games. does that mean long lines and extra waiting along the metro? gary neuronburg reports you have to know where you are going. >> reporter: the t is go together right stop. they wanted to go to the football game but got off at the armory before someone spotted them and so they got some help. they turned around and started again. for some, it is a two fer. >> i am going to a tailgate so i have to come here and go to the other stadium so it would be quicker to metro. >> being away for 15 mines so one train can go one way and the opposite way. it took a long time. >> reporter: not quite smooth sailing on the other line, either. >> i think i spent a half hour going three stops. >> it took a long time to get from chinatown to stadium armory. it took a half an hour. >> we are less than 48 hour as way from the first day of school, by the way, for d.c.

public schools. kristin fisher has the latest on back to school prep. >> reporter: hi, surae. many are all set for the first day of school. one school in the district parents say will not be ready by monday. volunteers at emery elementary school took a break during d.c.'s annual beautification day. thousands of volunteers helped out at over 100 schools in the district putting on the finishing touches for the first day of school. less than three miles away, there is a much bigger project taking place at john burrows elementary. >> reporter: it's brocationen. >> reporter: lacy would like to go to the first day of first grade on monday at burrows elementary. lacy's mother is having second thoughts. she's one of many parents angry at the district for not finishing a summer long renovation project on time. >> the work started late so they are traying to squeeze three months of work into a

four-week time period. >> reporter: unfortunately, our cameras were not allowed inside the school. the vice president of the ward five council on education was able to get inside on friday and shoot some video. take a look at what he saw. >> what you will see is ceiling work, plumbing work, the floors have to be cleaned. they are still putting down tiles. >> 48 hours, school will be opened. there are big, gaping holes in the side of the building. >> i want them to hurry up and fix it. >> reporter: their biggest concern is safety. >> that sign notice of asbestos project. >> reporter: the ward five council on education and all of the concerned parents are now calling for an air quality control test to be made public by monday. >> this d.c. school is not ready. and we will not allow our children to go in with conditions like this. we just won't. >> reporter: the d.c. office of facilities modernization is the d.c. office that's responsible

. welcome back. car buyers hoping to take advantage of the government's cash for clunkers rebate have just over 48 hours left to make a deal. the government is pulling the plug on the program as of 8:00 p.m. monday. so far, nationwide, 489,000 clunkers have been traded in for $2 billion in rebates, but the government has been slow to pay some dealers and major automakers are stepping in to front money to the dealerships until the government pays up. transportation secretary ray lahood says the government will make good on the rebates for all sales made before monday's

deadline. okay. doctors and nurses at a california hospital are celebrating a new arrival today. listen. oh, yeah, weighing in at 7 pounds, the new bundle of joy is samantha. she's the hospital's new robotic baby. the $35,000 robot can simulate everything a real baby can do. samantha will serve as a teaching tool for students and staff at the medical center's clinical skills lab. >> we can practice anything that goes wrong. we can actually do that in our lab and duplicate it and not have that problem in the future and people can react to it. >> reporter: sill a.-antha is the first robotic baby but they already have four adult robots. a lot of rain out there, tony and fans are hoping the faucette will be shut off by kickoff time. >> i don't know about by kickoff but the second half should be solid. we'll talk about that and give

wth 'sathy all of the flooding problems are around and standing water on the roadways. temperatures generally in the 70s will drop back a couple of degrees to around 70 because it's muggy right now. we have a stalled front right up and down the i-95 corridor and an area of low pressure traveling along that front. nothing can move because there is a big hurricane in the way offshore. this is hurricane bill. the maximum sustained winds now 85 miles per hour down to a category one moving to the north at 20 miles per hour. so as soon as it gets past parallel with us, the front will have a chance to move out. that should happen during the day tomorrow. there's nothing going on upstream. the weather should be fairly quiet as we head into the beginning of 'sthe workweek. tonight, showers and thunderstorms before midnight. then mostly cloudy, muggy with a low near 70. most of the day on sunday is going to be dry with a high temperaturer in 84. it can become less humid a lot less humid as we head into the beginning of the week. monday and tuesday will be nice

a stormy evening so far at fedex field at about 5:20 playered started to check out the soggy conditions and promptly got off the field which wh they spotted the lightning. that back and forth dance has been going on all afternoon. the fans are now in the stands. welcome back to fed fedex field right outside the locker room to get out of the elements. if they thought things were difficult in baltimore, i can't imagine tonight's opponent would be any easier. the steelers are in town and the positive is that all of the starters should be on the field. jason campbell gets his quarterbacks back. you may not see them hong but the fact that they are playing means this offense has no excuse not to put points on the board. >> i want to ask them about playing the whole game, you

down those seats. last season during the monday night game here, the terrible towels infiltrated this stadium and against a team as stacked as the steelers, they will take any advantage they can get. >> i think it's fun that, you know, we're doing the same thing. i just think it's, you know, a preseason game but you know what, we've got great fans. it's in good fun, you know? he's competitive. we're competitive. i don't know if there's going to be battles of the towels or whatever, but it'll be fun. >> reporter: on the steelers side of the ball, big ben roethlisberger is out for tonight's game. he sustained an injure to his foot on thursday. charlie batch likely starting in his place. college football and the first a.p. poll is out in into grabbing the top spot with the highest percentage of first place points ever, the gators getting 58 out of 60 top votes. virginia tech is seven. they open with bama.
