the search for reality tv show contestant wanted in the death of his ex-wife is over. ryan jenkins disappeared last week. he was wanted for the gruesome murder of jasmine fiore, a model. >> the body of ryan alexander jenkins was, in fact, found in a motel in hope, british columbia, canada. the cause of death appears to be suicide. >> jenkins apparently hanged himself in a remote canadian motel. the motel manager said a young woman checked him in last thursday. fiore's mutilated body was foupd in a trash can 20 miles from los angeles. police say they believe jenkins was the only one found in her murder. the draw to see mother nature in all her fury proved deadly to two people this weekend. the draw was the high surf and crashing waves triggered by hurricane bill. yesterday thousands gathered along the shore of maine's

acadia national park. at least ten people were hit by one rogue wave. three were swept out to sea. the coast guard made several dramatic rescues. one 7-year-old girl died when she was spuld from the surf. >> one wave was a little bit larger than the other ones, and people were getting too comfortable being close to the water. they got a little too close. >> bill is also blamed for the death of a florida swimmer on saturday. this morning bill is losing strength off the coast of newfoundland. overseas in greece, gale force winds have been driving dozens of wildfires, subsiding this morning but expected to resume later today. it forced tens of thousands to evacuate and are threatening numerous archaeological sites. one called it an ecological disaster. sheila macvicar reports. >> reporter: fueled by high winds, dozens of wildfires are burning in the suburbs to the north of athens. started on friday, the fires quickly spread across more than

25 miles as residents battle to save their homes. only if 1 million greeks come and help, we'd manage to put this fire out, says this resident. as the fires do hover closer, people fled on foot. so far there have been no casualties, but many homes have been lost and 30,000 acres burnt. greek officials have called this an environmental disaster. the fires have destroyed vast tracks of forest. securing life and property is the first order of business for firefighte firefighters, says the greek interior minister. i do not underestimate the environmental catastrophe, but life comes first. we spoke to nicholas today, who's on the front lines of the fire through the greek tv antenna. >> the fires are so wild they could not be controlled. right now there are many front. the wind is gaining speed now as

we approach the sunset. it has been the black sunday for athens because the sun was covered by huge smoke. >> reporter: smoke so dense it was as if the sun was eclipsed. >> despite the strong fight of the firefighters and even a lot of volunteers, many of the people tried to do it themselves. what we have is really an eclipse of hope. >> reporter: in the past investigations have shown arsonists deliberately set fires to protect this forest to free land for construction. now the challenge is on the firefighters to keep the flames from reaching the historic part of athens, the cradle of western civilization. and tonight as hundreds of volunteers, army con scripts, and firefighters try to fend off the flames, all thoughts are on that battle. sheila macvicar, cbs news, london. today the cia inspector general releases a report detailing alleged abuse of terror suspects at secret cia prisons. cbs news reports interrogators

staged mock executions to frighten prisoners and threatened others with guns and a drill. "the new york times" reports the justice department wants to reopen nearly a dozen alleged abuse cases, reversing the bush administration policy. also today, the obama administration is introducing new guidelines for interrogating prisoners. the cash for clunkers program ends tonight. the last-minute rush to trade in the old gas guzzlers has left many dealers with something they haven't seen in a while, empty lots. tara mergener has more. >> reporter: as you know, this program has been very popular with dealers and consumers. but tonight it's the end of the road. across the country, dealerships are bracing for last-minute shoppers eager to cash in on the cash for clunkers program. >> never seen the showroom, in the 27 years i've been here, this busy. >> reporter: over the weekend, customers packed this honda dealer in new york. they lined up hoping to get a rebate of up to $4,500 when they

traded in their old gas guzzler for a more fuel-efficient vehicle. >> i'm very excited about the gas mileage. >> reporter: richard and stephanie miller are now the proud owners of this cherry red 2010 ford fusion. they scooped up a $3,500 rebate from the government and a $1,500 rebate from ford when they parted ways with their 16-year-old explorer. >> it gave us a lot of good years, but she's had it. >> reporter: as of friday, dealers have sold almost 500,000 cars under the plan, bringing in more than $2 billion in rebates. but it hasn't exactly been a smooth ride. many dealerships fronting the money for the rebate say they still haven't gotten paid. in fact, so far the government has only reimbursed four in ten deals. >> out of over 100, we got paid for 2. >> reporter: the government says the hold-up is the processing. there are reportedly 1,200 people working around the clock to tackle the paperwork. despite all the red tape, the

miss venezuela won the miss universe beauty pageant. last night stefania fernandez dressed in a beautiful red gown embraced the runner-up as the announcement was made. it's the first time a contestant from the same country won for the second straight year. former cuban leader fidel castro appears in good condition in a newly released video. castro appeared on cuban tv for the first time since june of last year. in the video of him chatting with students from venezuela, the 83-year-old castro had surgery three years ago and stepped down as president in 2008. in afghanistan, the u.s. military commander may ask president obama for another 20,000 troops to control the security situation in afghanistan. meanwhile, the main opponent of president hamid karzai charges there was election fraud. former foreign minister abdullah abdullah says that turnout figures were padded. on the "cbs money watch" stock markets in asia rebounded this morning. claire leka is here in new york with more. good morning.

>> good morning to you, michelle. stock markets around the world stage a big rally overnight after fed chairman ben bernanke said the world's largest economy was nearing recovery. japan's benchmark nikkei surged 3.33%. on wall street, the dow starts the day at its highest level this year, above 9,500, after soaring 156 points on friday. the tech heavy nasdaq gained 31. there are several key economic reports on deck later this week, including personal ome sp,endidi home prices, and durable goods orders. millions of people may see a net loss in their social security checks next year. that's because trustees are projecting no cost of living increase in january while medicare prescription drug premiums, often deducted from the checks, are expected to rise. and gas prices haven't budged over the past two weeks. the national lundberg survey of fuel prices says the cost of a gallon of regular at the pump heldtady at $2.64. that's more than a dollar

cheaper than the same time last year. in italy there's a bank where you can eat the deposits. millions of pounds of parmesan cheese is aging in this vault. it's worth up to $186 million. the cheese makers put it there as collateral for bank loans. they get money now, and the parmesan stays in the vault for as long as two years until it's ready to sell. michelle? >> who would have ever expected? claire leka here in new york. claire, thanks. on the "cbs healthwatch," a new study released this morning finds that more american teenagers are abusing adhd drugs. over eight years, calls to poison control centers about teens abusing attention deficit drugs soared 77%. abuse typically involves crushing and snorting the pills, which speeds up the effects, but can produce life-changing side effects. in sports, the phillies close out the mets in historic fashion. i never thought it could happen to me...

the latest satellite picture shows clouds drifting over the rockies, but it's a clear morning just about everywhere else. later today, thunderstorms are likely across the northern plains and parts of the southwest. meanwhile, it should be a beautiful day from the gulf coast to the great lakes, and the heat will return to the east coast. in baseball, for the first time in 82 years and just the second time ever, a major league game ended with an unassisted triple play. in the ninth inning against the new york mets with runners on first and second, philadelphia second baseman eric bruntlett caught a line drive, stepped on second, and tagged out the third runner. phillies won it 9-7. jon smoltz's return to the national league went just as planned. he got out nine and allowed just three hits in five shutout innings to lead the st. louis cardinals over the san diego padres 5-2. in los angeles, chicago's jake fox went 4 for 4 with a home run and two rbis as the cubs rallied for a 3-1 victory over the dodgers to avoid a

here's another look at this morning's top stories. a report due out today from the cia inspector general reportedly alleges the agency abused terror suspects in its secret prisons. about a dozen cases have been referred to the justice department. and the first family has begun its vacation in martha's vineyard. the white house says the president plans some golf and a little swimming. meantime, president obama promised to close a detention camp at guantanamo bay, cuba, by january. as the government prepares for trials of some 66 terror suspects, one of the military lawyers has broken ranks over guantanamo and decided to follow his conscience. lara logan reports. >> reporter: reserve lieutenant colonel darrell vanderbilt could not keep silent. >> silence in the face of evil is collaboration with evil. >> reporter: he was a military prosecutor in guantanamo until he decided to speak out against the corruption of justice he found there. >> our fighting men and women who are putting themselves in

harm's way, they're not fighting for rigged kangaroo trials. >> reporter: that's exactly the kind of trial colonel vanderbilt says they were getting at guantanamo, and he should know. he was the lead prosecutor in seven cases. when darrell arrived there in may 2007, he was fresh from the battlefield in iraq. >> i wanted to punish them. i wanted vengeance. >> i would characterize him as a true believer. >> reporter: major david fracht was the defense attorney in the case that would ultimately compel darrell to risk everything. mohammed jawad was accused of throwing a hand grenade at two special forces soldiers in 2002, injuring them severely. at the time, this afghan boy was 16 or 17 years old. his case was prosecuted aggressively by vanderbilt. >> so it was clear to you that he was guilty? >> i had no doubt in my mind, base # on what i received, that he had been convict '. >> reporter: but a chance recovery would reveal that importance evidence in the case

had been withheld. vanderveld discovered that jawad had made a statement to military investigators, a statement that was backed up by u.s. guards in the prison. >> that he had been hooded and slapped. he had been shackled, hooded, and thrown downstairs. >> reporter: and you knew nothing about this as the prosecutor in his case? >> i knew nothing about the existence of the statement. >> reporter: how is that possible? >> the evidence was in a state of chaos. >> reporter: by law, vandeveld had to share his discovery with the defense. he now believed jawad was tortured even though he had no intelligence to offer, and he did not believe jawad could be convict. >> i think he was just as appalled by what he found in those records as i was. >> reporter: frakt said that discovery changed darrell vandeveld forever. he couldn't ignore the violations of law he discovered, critical evidence that was missing, lost, or withheld. >> the rules are applicable to everyone. there is no exception. there are no different forms of

justice. >> reporter: that led vandeveld to make the most agonizing decision of his life. in september of 2008, he resigned from the military commission. your conscience is clear? >> my conscience is not clear. i prosecuted mohammed jawad for too long. i participated in the commissions for too long. >> reporter: the pentagon in a statement to cbs news said "vandeveld's statements are proven to be unsubstantiated." >> the pentagon propaganda machine is hard at work to try to discredit darrell vandeveld. >> reporter: he received a poor evaluation report, which essentially ends his military career. >> you do the right thing, you will be forever grateful you did it no matter what happens to you. >> reporter: darrell's biggest regret, mohammed jawad is still behind bars, awaiting trial in guantanamo. lara logan, cbs news, williamsburg, virginia. coming up this morning on "the early show," the latest on hurricane bill. we'll speak with the coast guard members who took part in that

she was apparently dead from a self inflicted gunshot wound. hurricane bill is blamed for two death including a girl from maine. coast guard rescuers recovered them from the water but the 7- year-old died of their injuries. the hurricane has been downgraded in the last five minutes. good morning, howard. welcome back.
