the individual circumstance. they can be anything from suspension to expulsion. >> reporter: there was no specific threat made against the school. the students charged in the crime have been released to the custody of their manassas parents. the school district says it takes the incident very seriously because it views safety at its schools as the district's highest priority. we have a developing story where a pilot is accused of violating restricted air space around washington. sky 9 captured pictures of the plane that was forced to land at montgomery county air park. the faa says it was flown by a student pilot. a black hawk helicopter intercepted the plane and forced it to land. it is registered to a company out of spoketown, pennsylvania. cnn is reporting the company had an issue with violating restricted air space around dc two years ago. adc woman was arrested at

the ntairport early this mornin after customs officers found more than 2 1/2 pounds worth of cocaine stuffed inside her bra. 35-year-old sophia williams arrived from jamaica around 11:00 last night. immigration and customs enforcement agents say the cocaine was divided into two packages and designed to blend in with her bra. massive budget cuts, layoffs, and furloughs are on the way. it is part of a plan to cope with a $454 million deficit. about $210 million will be save bid state cuts to local governments. 205 layoffs and 159 unfilled vacant positions will save about $17 million more and a plan to furlough state workers is designed to save $75 million. for example, someone who makes more than $100,000 will lose ten days worth of pay. >> we have one simple intention and that is to get

maryland through the other side of this recession as quickly as possible with as much of our priorities in tact. so that we can see a better day. >> the proposed budget cuts go to the board of public works and that happens tomorrow. sky 9 flew over the scene of two accidents involving police officers this morning. on the bw parkway, a u.s. park police officer was making a traffic stop when his cruiser was rear ended by an out of control truck. the officer was thrown under the cruiser, which skidded 40 feet before coming to a stop. remarkbly, the officer survived. two other drivers were hurt, but they are expected to be okay. the southbound lane it is between route 197 and powder mill road were closed for much of the morning rush. and in virginia, a state trooper with injured after an early morning crash. officers were chasing a suspected drunken driver on route 110 when the trooper hit a jersey wall.

the suspect got away. the trooper's injuries were minor. in maryland, a charles county man is now charged with first-degree child abuse resulting in death. myron was taken into custody for the death of tyrese wade. wade was found dead in his home in the 3,000 block last week. gibson was the boyfriend of the child's mother. the resident is being held in the charles county detention center without bond. one day after we learn the death of michael jackson has officially been ruled a homicide. police continue to build their case against the singer's personal doctor. as manuel reports, dr. conwell murray should have known what he was doing with the drugs he gave to jackson. >> reporter: michael jackson's personal physician says police have twisted his account of what happened during the pop star's final hours. while murray admits giving jackson several drugs, his

lawyer says he never told police he left jackson's room to go make phone calls. a los angeles police search warrant indicates dr. murray admitted he drugged michael jackson several times over the course of approximately ten hours the day he died. the document shows murray used an iv to give jackson 10- milligrams of valium, 4- milligrams of madazalam and propoful. experts say he was playing with fire. >> he knew all the drugs that michael jackson had been taking. he must have been aware of the effects. this is basically pharmacology 101 and i think he made a poor choice of drugs. >> the doctor says the an stettic was the straw that broke the camels back. >> there is no excuse. that is not the kind of drug that should be administered outside of a hospital setting. it's much too dangerous. >> while the police are trying

stocks gained more ground today on wall street. the dow finished the day up 30 points to close at 9539. the nasdaq gained 6 points and the s & p 500 rose 2. president barack obama took time out of his family vacation to reappoint ben bernanke to his second four-year term. alexis has reaction from wall street. >> reporter: president obama wants the man who navigated the worst financial crisis since the great depression to keep steering the federal reserve. >> been approached financial system on the verge of collapse with calm and wisdom, with bold action and out of the box thinking, that helped put the brakes on our economic free

rise, rates on credit cards rise and this will not sit well with the public or the white house. >> bernanke is expected to face a grueling hearing before the senate likely signs off on another four years. alexis, cbs news, wall street. the housing market has turned another corner. for the first time in three years, home prices are rising. a closely watched home price index rose nearly 3% from the first quarter of this year. although second quarter prices are still down almost 15% from 2008. car dealers have until 8:00 tonight to submit their paperwork so they can be reimbursed under the cash for clunkers program. the original deadline was last night when the program ended. after pushing the deadline for dealers to noon today, the transportation department said the deadline would be extended even further, because of problems with its website. people with million dollar dreams are laying down a buck or two or even a little more this evening. tonight's megamillions jackpot

welcome back. let's reset some of the top stories in the news now. hundreds of students who went to school in prince georges county had nothing to do for a second straight day. frustrating start to the school year is blamed on a software problem that has failed to produce schedules for those students. racial graffiti greeted administrators at sinclair elementary school. sod that was intended for

landscaping was arranged to look like a swastika. high school students arrested on vandalism charges, all of them are black. and just a short time ago, the mayor of alexandria named a new police chief. brittany joins us with more. >> reporter: hello lesli. he is a lifelong resident of alexandria. he is the first african american police chief here for the city of alexandria. earl cooke was named head of the department. this after serving as interim chief. he spent the last three decades in law enforcement. this announcement comes after the former chief was charged with a dui. at the podium, chief cooke spoke about bringing back integrity to the office. we asked him about that. we said are you talking about recent events? he said not. this is something he learned as an important part of the job. he spent much of his job

country since the 2001 invasion. al-qaeda is claiming responsibility for a recent string of deadly bombings in iraq. the attacks killed more than 100 people and left hundreds more wounded. a deadly crane collapse that happened today in new york on the flog neck bridge that connects queens to the bronx. an trelecical worker was pinned. it's unclear what caused that accident. a small plane made an emergency landing today in a new jersey parking lot. it happened outside a mall in the rocoway township area. the pilot survived the hard landing and he appeared to be conscious. the plane suffered minimal damage and surrounded by foam to prevent flames from starting. crews battled flames. flames erupted at several buildings in the texas panhandle. no injuries to report and no word on what sparked those fires. arson investigators are looking into one large fire in

new jersey. the fire here engulfed an entire apartment complex in east orange this morning. 40 residents were displaced to a school that was converted into a shelter. three people suffered minor injuries. to detroit now where cleanup is underway where a large factory fire. the flames broke out yesterday in a chemical plant and finally brought under control this morning. there were several explosions and 300 workers were evacuated from surrounding businesses. at is still not clear yet elwh kespatd ar thfire. injuries there. and in greece, a massive wild fire is liar charlie res rtpofrom outside athens, that firefightersrtid d at firefighters did not do more to save their homes. >> fires that tore through greece are contained, but residents can't contain their anger. >> i'm burning inside, because i am furious. >> her house could have been saved if firefighters acted sooner. >> it's a graveyard right now. it's a graveyard. >> reporter: no one died in

the massive wild fires, but more than 150 homes were destroyed. >> we have a lot of memories here. it's our lives. >> reporter: 500 greek firefighters are keeping close watch as helicopters patrol to put out any flairups in the fire zone north of athens. residents say this is the exact location that the fire began. they say it should have ended here. instead, it burned out of control for 22 miles until it reached the outskirts of athens. the firefighters and police didn't show up, he says. nobody came. he could only watch as the farm his great grandfather built went up in flames. neighbors are outraged not a single firefighter was in sight. >> we used our bare hands and buckets of water to stop the houses from burning, he says. residents here feel abandoned. >> what are you going to do

okay, usually we are hearing from heart experts about the need to cut salt out of our diets. today the american heart association is taking aim at sugar. the aha says americans are swallowing the equivalent of 22- teaspoons of sugar each day, much of it from soft drinks. that not only makes people fat, but increases the risk of heart disease. the heart association says women should ideally cut back to 6-teaspoons or 100 calories worth of added sugar a day. 10-teaspoons for men. this doesn't count the sugar in fresh fruits, all the good stuff. we are talking added sugar. did you ever wonder how much of you is muscle versus fat? scared to find out and whether you are doing the right stuff to wide l the fat away.
