serving it. he always believed our best days were still ahead but it is hard to imagine any of them without him. last week senator kennedy sent a letter to massachusetts lawmakers asking his seat be filled quickly. his sister, eunice kennedy shriver died two weeks ago. he was unable to attend her funeral. the only lay makers serving long are thurman and bid. we will have more coverage on his death throughout the morning here on 9 news now. in other news, one of the things senator kennedy hoped to vote on is president obama's health care reform in the country. and the latest meeting on the issue took place last night in virginia. howard dean spoke on the president's plan. that's when protesters at south lake high school got especially loud. >> i'm sorry. but i can't even hear the governor and i'm sitting next

shuttle discovery. after weather delayed tuesday's early morning launch discovery was supposed to blast off four hours ago but they discovered a faulty valve during fueling. now nasa is working to find and fix the problem. the current launch window runs out this coming sunday. it is time for the first "living $mart" report of the morning and digital correspondent jessica doyle is here with a preview of the day on wall street. we finished in the green yesterday. >> more of the same pleasant, today. that's what we'd like to see. stocks rallied six days in a row now. strong economic date yesterday fueled the fire and today we will get a report on new home sales. as for trading today, asian stocks followed wall street higher. the dow stands at 9539 after climbing 30 points yesterday. the nasdaq added 6. the s&p 500 was up two points.

the child was found dead in the home last week. a sheriffs office spokeswoman says that gibson wrestled with the boy until the failed to wake up. gibson is being held without bond. the coast guard released a report on the deadly baltimore water taxi accident nearly 5 1/2 years after it happened. investigators found the crew of the boat made an unsafe decision to leave the dock with the storm approaching. five people died when the boat capsized in 2004 just after leaving fort mchenry. the report cited wind, waves and passenger weight. it also recommends assessing the state -- assessing the stability of pontoon boats. the new police chief is cook. t. he is the first african- american police chief in alexandria's 260 year history.

on monday, hundreds of students ran in to scheduling problems. school leaders say the problem is a new computerized scheduling system which was phased in last year called school mac. the problems have frustrated several parents. >> these schedules need to be mailed outing during the summertime. that way if there is a conflict with their schedule they can move forward and get that changed before the first day of school. >> reporter: both parents and students say having to wait until friday for a complete schedule is placing them in an uncomfortable situation. police in manassas, virginia, have charged four teenagers with vandalizing a school. they believe they used landscaping sod to deface a parking lot at the school. they created a kkk a swastika and the phrase "white power. d-day memorial in bedford county, virginia. it will lead to a decision on whether the memorial should be incorporated to america's park system. the next step will be up to president obama or congress. next month, dr. regina benjamin starts the confirmation process to see whether she will be the next surgeon general. she has gotten approval for a $2.2 million grant. the money will help her small alabama clinic move to an 8,000 square foot facility. scientists say there's a new bully in the atlantic ocean, the lion fish, which is native to asia. it is a creature with bright stripes, big showy fins and spines loaded with a neuro toxin. it spread in the atlantic after hurricane andrew ten years ago when many fish were swept in to open waters. they are trying to gain an upper leg on the fish that can produce 30,000 new eggs a week. one of the most storied
