crews are on the scene. taking it to the district, northeast dc, inbound new york avenue is filling out a bit between the times building and bladensburg and the outer loop, some volume from university to georgia. now, over to andrea. we are following a developing story out of northeast washington. police are investigating an officer-involved shooting. these are live pictures from benning road near 34th street. all we're being told right now is one suspect was injured and we're not told how severely. the officer is fine. outbound benning road is shut down while police investigate. today the final farewell to senator kennedy begins. it starts in his native massachusetts but will end in our region. the late senator will be buried at arlington national cemetery. he will be laid to rest near the gravesite of his brothers john and robert. there will be a private pure

burial on saturday. today senator kennedy's body will be taken from his family home at cape cod around lunchtime and begin a two hour journey to the jfk library in boston. it will go past sites that were important to him. he will lie in repose for two days. thousands of well beneficiariers are expected. a memorial will be held there tomorrow night and saturday a funeral at the our lady of perpetual health basilica in boston. kennedy went there to pray while his daughter battled cancer. >> he came several times to pray for her and met with a healing priest here and he conducted healing ministries. >> reporter: president obama will deliver a eulogy on saturday at the funeral mass. two things come to mind when you think of boston the kennedy's and the red sox. the team paid tribute to the

late senator. the fenway park crowd held a moment of silence for kennedy. his grand father, former boston major john fitzgerald christened the park 97 years ago. senator kennedy introduced his first health care bill decades ago. now some on the hill hope it will renew the push for health dare reform. bruce leshan has that part of the story. >> i told myself i'd get better. >> abby is one of the people ted kennedy always fought for. hired out of college at her dream job in new york she was two months shy of earning health insurance when she was diagnosed with an ovarian cancer. >> fast forward, surgery is done and i'm healthy and i have a bill for $12,000, that i can't afford. my parents had to refinance their home to help me pay off my debt. >> reporter: maryland's chris van hollen is one of the

we are watching danny because dannwiadllhe da e theast coast of the u.s. thankfully we believe danny will stay off shore, but co thcle enough ghto cause some big problems i think for area beaches especially as we get in to friday turday. the centof rduay. the center of circulation is to the west of that b blob of thunderstorms and danny is not as well organized as a big tropical system. that's good. with that sheer keeping it weaker, that's helping us. the more time it is weak the less time it has to build up water and storm surge and things that go with a bigger storm. with winds to 70 now with a northwest movement at nine miles an hour and located 780 miles southeast of ocean city. looks like it will go north and northeast. this is good it will make the turn and keep it off shore. by 2:00 saturday morning minimal hurricane here, east of hatteras, passing east of the mid-atlantic and may clip eastern massachusetts on the

he went six innings, gave up to two runs and struck out six. he left when the game was tied at two. derrek lee helped out with a two run double. the nats lose 9-4. the naval academy heads to ohio state in two week for the football season opener and the buckeyes are putting out a reminder to rabid fans, be nice. in a youtube video, ohio state is asking fans to stand up and cheer when the midshipmen when they take the field in honor of their future military service. ohio state hasn't hosted the academy since ' 31. quarterback michael vick is expected to play tonight for the eagles. it will be hi first nfl game in nearly three years following his conviction on dog fighting charges. there will be a rally in support of the virginia tech grad outside of the eagles

it happened three hours ago. all we know is the officer fired his or her gun hitting a suspect. we don't know the suspect's condition but we know the officer was not hurt. president obama and all four living presidents will attend saturday's funeral of senator kennedy. the liberal date died at the age of 77. people will begin to pay respects today. we want to give you a look outside of the kennedy compound in hyannis port, massachusetts. kennedy's body is still there but in a few hours will be brought to boston where he will lie in repose. senator kennedy is remembered for his more than 40 years of service in the united states senate. for many in massachusetts, the man was admired for his ideas an ideals. >> the work goes on. the cause endures. the hope still lives and the dream shall never die. >> reporter: some supporters

paid tribute to kennedy in a candle light vigil. while others sent flowers to his office in washington the governor of massachusetts talked about filling the senator's now vacant seat. >> we have a provision in our current law that requires a special election in circumstances like this one. i support that law. so did senator kennedy. i also believe the senator's request to permit the governor to appoint someone to serve for the p.m.ly five months between now and the special election is eminently reasonable. >> reporter: the kennedy family gathered at the family compound in hyannis port ahead of the senator's final journey that will take him from massachusetts to arlington national cemetery outside of washington. first the motorcade from hyannis port and then the kennedy presidential library in boston where the senator's body will lie in repose and a memorial service on friday evening. the senator will be laid to rest on saturday at arlington national cemetery near his

disorderly conduct charges this morning. the two were part of a group of 300 student on the campus who decided to hold an impromptu party outse of a campus dorm room. it seems they decided to party during their last day before the start of classes. new this morning a look at how local students are doing on the sates. the college board is out with a look at the average scores nationwide and by state the top score is 2400 with math, writing and reading sections. that means a score for students in the district, the mean score for students in the district is 1523. the same in maryland. virginia students averaged 150 t. it is the nationwide mean score with 500 on all three sections. jessica doyle is back with another living smart report. you have some good and bad news on the economy. >> you want to start with the

good news. let's start with the good news. the good news is we are seeing a lot of signs the economy is on the mend. the latest from the housing and manufacturing sectors. new home sales increased the fourth straight month thanks in part to first time home buyers rushing in. they are trying to take ad ntage of a tax credit which expires in november. and a spike in demand for commercial aircraft and motor vehicles and that lifted durable goods orders by the biggest amount in two years. here's the bad news. the federal reserve official says the real unemployment rate in the country is closer to 16%. that's not the official number of 9.4%. dennis lockhart says it gets to the higher number if you count people who stop looking for a job after a long unsuccessful job hunt and those working less than they would like to. and he thinks many are gone for good like many manufacturing jobs lost during the recession. here's another bummer.

if it doesn't launch by sunday discovery's mission will have to wait until october. >> as nasa gets ready to try to launch discovery, it is taking a hard look at the future of manned space travel. it is something that affects thousands of jobs in our area. new this morning, kristin fisher sat down with one expert to talk about nasa's future. tell us more. >> well, when discovery launches early tomorrow morning, if it goes as planned, there will be six more shuttle launches left. the fleet is set to retire in 2010. that's next, the moon, mars, or could it be the beginning of the end for nasa ' human space flight program. >> three, two, one. >> reporter: in 2005, president bush announced nasa's new vision for space exploration. >> return toe this moon. >> the program is called constellation the mission to put men back on the moon and then on to mars.

four years and $4 billion later, consolation's future is in crisis. >> its future is an open issue today. >> reporter: the chairman of the u.s. human space flight plans committee was appointed by president obama in may to rethink nasa ' future. and his findings could have dire consequences for constellation. >> the bottom line of our effort was that the current program as it is funded today probably can't be executed. the funding doesn't match the work to be done. >> reporter: so augustine and his committee tried to find an ail a-- an affordable alternative but say it is not possible. they say the only way astronauts will explore beyond earth's orbit is if nasa gets a bigger budget. >> we think we are at a tipping point. >> reporter: and it could be a tipping.for contractors many based in the greater washington area. >> the impact of the various options could be quite serious

in the terms of work force. we travel to nasa centers most involved and people want to know what is the outcome and in fact i'm curious to know what will be the outcome. >> reporter: there you have it. the bottom line is no one knows what is next for nasa. august strene and his commission will deliver a report record -- report in mid september then up to the president to determine what is next for nasa if anything. and we are seeing nasa at the most uncertain time in the agency's history and it is coming at the start of the next space race. a lot of people say you have china and india wanting to return to the moon by 2020. >> korea just lunched something. >> it will be interesting to see what happens. no one knows what is next for nasa right now. >> you will keep us up to date on what is going on. >> here's howard. >> i can't imagine us not doing
