sibling, as well as kennedy's widow, vicky kennedy there in the front, following the casket in. his daughter wiping her tears away. a touching moment that happened just a short time ago. hundreds really have been lining up here at the library to get the chance to get in and pay their respects. >> reporter: thousands lined the streets to say good-bye to senator edward kennedy. a motorcade carrying the senator's body made his way from the cape cod compound passing significant landmarks in his lives. thousands more have flocked here to the john f.k.'s library. these friends from nebraska were in fifth grade when he was shot. learning from their way, boston, he had lost his battle with brain cancer. >> it's a time that is full of memories, and it just needs a lot here to the kennedy family. and all that they have contributed to us in our

country. >> reporter: more than 50 of kennedy's colleagues plan to pay their respects here before saturday's funeral. all the living form of presidents are expected to attend the service and president obama will speak. earlier, the kennedy family, they gathered for a private mass at the compound. and kennedy's wife, children, along with scores of nieces and nephews and grandchildren watched while this was placed in the hearse. they knew him as uncle teddy, but his aspirations touched young people who never met him. >> we should all be able to do something good if we feel like that is in the country and not just standby. >> reporter: the next few days will be filled with tributes. then the last kennedy brother will be laid to rest at arlington national cemetery. speaking at tomorrow night's private memorial service which is being built as a celebration of kennedy's vice president joe biden and vice republican john cain showing to force real

friendships with the folks who didn't necessarily always agree with him. in boston, karen brown, nine news now and wusa9.com. >> after his funeral mass in boston, his casket will be blown to andrews and turned into a private ceremony at arlington national cemetery. bruce is live in arlington with more on that, bruce? >> reporter: yeah, senator kennedy spent a whole lot of time up here at arlington visiting the graves of his assassinated brothers as well as coming to pay tribute to every single massachusetts troop who gave his or her life for his country. he'll be buried up on that hillside, looking out over washington where he served for almost half a century. four million people a year remembered the fallen at arlington. and this hillside area is where most of them stop first. the internal fles flicker in the plaza where president kennedy rests. the soft melody

and waved at us, that put a tear in our eyes. >> reporter: it's still unclear why people might watch this recession, but his grave will be here with his family. we are still awaiting official word on the route of the kennedy motorcade, but it's a fairly good bet that it will be coming down memorial drive here. and this area is open to the public. senator kennedy is eligible for burial here at arlington. both because he served in the army after world war ii, and because it was 46 years in the senate. >> thank you very much for that report. a portrait of senator edward kennedy now resides at a new section in the portrait gallery here in washington. the silkscreen paint is on display in the museum's remembrance gallery. the portrait was created in 1983 to raise money for the presidential bid. the museum opened a remembrance gal row after -- gallery after

apologies. >> the superintendent, they are continuing to push through the crisis here that started on the first day of school on monday, with at least 8,000 students parked in gyms and cafeterias. because of the new computer system, they had not generated schedules of classes for them. >> she's very close to them. today at crossland high school, a much improved situation. students put in classes, even if only temporarily while guidance counselors worked out schedules for nearly 300 one by one with new paper. >> we write it up a hand and make a copy for the child. >> reporter: school officials say there were 1900 students still without permanent schedules. county wide by midday. >> to have more than 8,000 high school students without a schedule on the first day of school is inexcusable. >> reporter: the focus now is on a brand new $4.1 million computer school system. the possibility that the school system will go after the

they rated the pawnshop in the 5600 of annapolis road this morning. police claim that they found so much stolen property out there that they had to borrow a truck from a nearby safeway to haul it all away. >> d.c. police shot and killed a man this morning that happened after officers responded to a report of a man with a gun at the shell station and the 3300 block of bening road southeast. when they arrived, the suspect allegedly pointed a weapon at the officers who then fired on him. police would not say if it was a robbery attempt. >> at this time, well, i have been told that the subject had a weapon and he was tapping on the shell station out there. and the rotation there. >> reporter: the officers, they are on routine administrative leave. they were not injured. >> an 18-year-old kidnapping investigation that was never solved in northern california, they may have a surprise ending now. authorities say that a woman came to police claiming that she was abducted when she was 11.

>> we'll have more on in developing story. >> reporter: they have not been seen or heard from in almost two decades. but sheriff detectives in northern california feel very confident that the woman who walked into a police station is the missing girl they have been looking for since 1991. >> i'm in shock. >> reporter: the stepfather says he witnessed the 11-year-old j.c. being kidnapped by a man and a woman as she walked to her school bus stop. authorities say two people are now in custody in connection with this case. >> i'm more curious about what the details are, you know, who these people are, who, you know, what she's been doing. >> reporter: a massive hunt went on for her in the south lake community. the fbi released fliers and national crime shows reenacted her abduction. her stepfather says that the woman jumped out of the car and grabbed her as j.c. screamed, he chased the kidnappers, but they got away. >> the national center for missing and exploited children

stocked closed higher on wall street. finishing the day, up 37 points to close at 95.81. nasdaq climbed three points and they rose two points. layoffs appear to be easing. the labor department reports the number of newly laid off

workers filing for jobless pen fits dropped last week. the total number of people receiving the benefits also fell. still, both figures remain above levels associated with the healthy economy. and they expect the unemployment rate to keep rising. as we all know, it's not the best time to find employment right now. but grower graduating from one of the most successful job training programs in the area, then you've got a head start. digital correspondent, peggy fox, has the story of one local pathway to the american dream. through a unique job training program called training features. one of 50 trainees to graduate today. >> giving me the skills i needed to not limit myself anymore. >> she already started a new job as the missions coordinator for all of them in arlington. she makes close to $40,000 a year and now has the skills to

move up. >> so far, she's doing fantastic. doing great. >> tony george, the manager says that training futures help fill a void even in this economy. >> to find highly qualified people to fill the positions and to, you know, really to be up to speed right away is very difficult and in having a vehicle like training feature that is really helping us. >> the graduates have spent 25 weeks in the simulated business office environment. learning windows xp, microsoft office, keyboarding skills. but they have also learned like-manager skills. >> reporter: the program is so successful that 90% of the graduates find jobs every year. >> it really is a great investment. a little bit of money goes in. and a lot of money goes here. >> but supporters say that it is a worthwhile investment.

showers and thunderstorms, on and off all day. it'll be pretty heavy about 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. not going to be out there necessarily during the redskins game. but i need to keep showers in the forecast. a couple of thunderstorms are possible out there. warmer again back in the mid-80s. even leftover showers possible on sunday in the mid-80s, but not bad. not bad at all. we'll talk about danny or easterly tracks that are training out there. that's a good thing. 50 miles per hour. right now, about 550 miles southeast. it could become a hurricane once they pick up past them. the real interesting thing about this track is what they do to southern new england. they will get hit with the tropical storm forced winds if they take a more westerly track to get hit with the hurricane forced winds. we show you this with bill and also danny yesterday, the lines are coming together. representing a computer model. they are coming together to get out there. we agree, we're all happy, more confidence. and one line, one track, they do take it, just over boston.

and that would be unbelievable. that really will do some serious damage to them. and we'll be in pretty good shape except for the rip currents. you know someone going to the beach, and probably closing some beaches this weekend because of that. the track is important. we have talked about that yesterday. beaches, heavy surf and rip currents, no matter what track it takes. it'll miss the metro area. more rain from the front. and good news on saturday and sunday, not a wash out. for tonight, mostly cloudy, a big muggy. showers and thunderstorms are possible. 68 to about 74. temperatures right now, not bad. mid-80s, 85 out here at bell haven. and tomorrow, mostly cloudy with showers and thunderstorms. some will be hefty in terms of rainfall.

springfield virginia native will be on board discovery when they hraufpbl tomorrow night. if all goes as planned, there will only be six more shuttle launches. they are set to retire in 2010. what's next for nasa? the moon, the mars, or the end of the space flight program? they have some answers. their mission is to put them back at noon and then onto march. but fours years, constellations futures are in crisis. >> its future is, well, an open issue today. >> he is the chairman of the u.s. human space flight committee, appointed by president obama in maine to rethink nasa's future. and their findings could have the dire consequences for constellations.

>> the bottom line of our effort was that the current program, as they are funded today, they probably can't be executed. the funding doesn't match the work that needs to be done. >> so all of them, they try to find an affordable alternative, but they concluded it's not possible. they say that the only way astronauts will ever explore beyond the orbit is if they get a bigger budget. there that'll be fair to say that they work in a typical point for them. >> they could also be a tipping point for the contractors, many that are based in the washington area. >> the impact is the various options that could be, well, quite serious in terms of the work force that we have talked to all the people that are concerned. traveling the very different centers that are most involved in that and people, they wanted to know what's going to be the outcome. the fact that i'm curious to know what will be the outcome. the bottom line is that no one really knows what is next for nasa or for nasa's

schools. nearly 2,000 students did not have a classroom kenneled today. they have given up generating schedules on computers, and they have gone back to paper and pencils to solve the problem. >> a bus driver lets a student off the wrong stop and that child gets in a car with a stranger. luckily everyone turned out okay. they want someone held responsible. they have the full story. >> the 6-year-old jackson knew he was not suppose to get on the bus monday. but he says his teacher made him. >> she said that i was on a bus ride. and i said, no, i'm not. >> he then missed his bus. >> they told me to get off the bus. >> how did they say that? >> in a mean way. >> reporter: it gets worse. he was lost and afraid, gets in the car with a stranger. luckily it was another parent, and she took him back to school. >> the director of transportation says that the

bus driver should have never let him off the bus, not even if he was here at his own home. it's because the bus driver knew he was not one of the students she was suppose to take home. >> reporter: i talked with transportation director michael dodson by phone. he says because of this incident, they have changed the way that students are picked up. and instead of staying in the classroom, he says students will wait for parents on the basketball court. but his mom wants the bus driver held responsible. >> i think already she should already have been suspended and or fired. >> reporter: dodson says they have begun the process to consider disciplinary action, but he says that it is all confidential. she also wants to thank the good samaritan who picked up her son. >> i just want to say thank you to whoever you are. for saving my son's life.

break grounds out there. they show off their naval academy for the first time today. located out there in indianapolis. it took a year and a half to finish and they use the state of the art and graphic materials to show their role in war and peace. the museum is open 9-5 monday through saturday and sunday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. august is now one of the deadliest months for u.s. forces fighting in afghanistan. experts blame the mounting death toll on new operations. and as they report, the commanders, ordering troops into areas long controlled into the taliban and the militants are fighting back. this could be the didliest month for u.s. forces in afghanistan since the war began eight years ago. so far, 44 u.s. service members have been killed in august

alone. and the same number died last month. a record number of u.s. troops, they are now in the country. more than 60,000. taking the fight to the taliban. u.s. commanders are sending their forces spwo areas where they have not been. like in this operation earlier this month in the southern part of afghanistan. controlled by the taliban for years. she's an expert on the relationship between the u.s. and afghanistan. and she says that it is no surprise that the death toll is rising right now. >> and these are important to the taliban. so that they are fighting back. they are trying to hold onto these strongholds. >> and the taliban's a-f tempt to disrupt the recent elections were kept under control by the u.s. and afghan forces. no major attacks. >> still, experts, they caution that things, they will continue to get worse before they get better. >> so we need to give the strategy times to bear fruit.
