georgia avenue is closed between brookeville road and market street. this is because a driver we are told drove in to a pole we have downed wires there. crews will be out there for a long time. moving over to 270 from germantown to 370. a good amount of volume. no accidents. on 66 eastbound in virginia we are slow in one spot from 50 to 123 and this point nutley to the beltway you are okay. on the inner and outer loop you are all clear. andrea, over to you. at one past the hour it has been a rough first week back to school for thousands of children in prince georges county. a big scheduling problem has kept them out of class. now we're learning officials knew about the problem well in advance. digital correspondent, armando trull , is live in temple hills with the latest. >> andrea, school begins in a couple of hours here in prince georges county and for a couple of thousand students, today, friday, may actually be the first day of class. >> i want to offer my sincere

apologies. >> that's about all the portion county school superintendent could say given one of the worst starts to a school year in the county's history. what's more, the portion county school system apparently knew months before the first school bell rang this monday that it had major problems with the scheduling system. problems which forced 8,000 students to school their heels in school gyms, cafeterias and auditoriums for lack of dallas schedules. >> we write it up, a copy they are the data processor and hand it to the child. >> they scheduled the students the old fashioned way but on thursday there were still 1900 students without full class schedule and with four days of lost classes to make up. >> andrea, during a press conference yesterday the school superintendent said they are going to look at the contract they have with the software provider to see if there are any financial remedies. however, that software provider says it has installed the

system in many other schools throughout the country and they have not had similar problems. reporting live, armando trull for 9 news now and wusa9.com. a prince georges county mother is calling for action against the bus driver who put her son off the bus. 6-year-old decarlos jackson wasn't even supposed to be on the bus but he said a teacher putt him on board. once on the bus the driver made him get off at a stop that was several miles from his home. the child wound up being picked up from a stranger who happened to be a parent who drove him back to school. >> i think she should have been suspended and or fired. >> reporter: michael doddson is the director of transportation. he says the bus driver may soon face disciplinary action. doddson says the driver should not have put him off the bus because the bus driver knew the child was not one of the students she was supposed to take home. in two hours the public viewing of the body of senator ted kennedy resumes in boston. yesterday's viewing took a few

extra hours. it was supposed to end at midnight but 7,000 people were still in line. police let them come through to pay their respects. this is what it looked like just before 1:30 this morning. the viewing didn't end until about 2:00 a.m. earlier in the day kennedy's body was taken from the family compound on cape cod. it traveled to boston passing by sites important to the late senator's life. thousands passed the route to say farewell. >> all i can do is tip my cap and wave a flag and it's my way of saying i respect him and i'm paying homage to him and his family. >> reporter: there will be a private memorial service tonight at the jfk library after the second round of public viewings. senator kennedy's funeral is tomorrow in boston. president obama will deliver one of the eulogies. we will have live coverage beginning tomorrow morning at 10:00. and be sure to visit our special section on ted

depend on vehicle donations. >> this is where we operate our horticultural therapy program. >> reporter: one piece of melwood's operation serving the developmentally disabled community, funded in part by vehicle donations. those donations dropped dramatically after cash for clunkers. >> we are looking at 100 to $120,000 lost for our program. >> reporter: melwood's vehicle donations dropped 16% in july alone. volunteers of america thought its donations dropped 13% nationwide so far for august and the impact could continue. the cash for clunkers program took 700,000 older high-energy gas guzzlers off the road. the same profile of vehicles that typically get donated. >> we're afraid people who may have done it in the fall months would have rushed to qualify their car for cash for

clunkers, which would make it a lighter fall. >> reporter: goodwill of greater washington is predicting a drop up to 20% in donations in the last three months of the year. car donation charities have their concerns about the future but there is a bill moving through congress that is leading to optimism. >> it would raise the limit from a minimum charitable deduction on a car from $500 to $2,500. >> reporter: allowing consumers to get a bigger tax break. that may be the incentive they need to donate the old car in the driveway if they haven't turned it already during cash for clunkers. the bill would reinstitute some of the tax benefits for vehicle donations which were reduced by congress in 2004. since that irs rule change, donations have been cut in half, even before cash for clunkers. they are really hoping that will pass. >> thank you for the followup. >> you are welcome. you have heard of drive- thru. how about a flow through.

welcome back. here's our hero central story. at ten years old what were you thinking. >> it never would have occurred to me to do what one boy is doing. he was ten years old when the took a trip to africa. what he saw changed his life. >> i saw a woman and young boy walking down the street and both looked tired an i thought why not give them bikes. everyone has an old bikes. bikes can be used everywhere and that's where it started.

officer who fired the fatal shot is on paid leave. that is standard procedure. investigators say the officer fired after the suspect did not follow an order to drop his weapon. in prince georges county, a rough first week of school for thousands of high schoolers because of a computer glitch. armando trull is live in temple hills with new information on this schedule snafu. armando? >> well, andrea, apparently school officials were aware they were having problems with the computer that basically schedules the class for 120,000 students but they were unable to solve those glitches and that meant during the first week of school, 8,000 kids had to sit around and do nothing. >> have more than 8,000 students without a schedule on the first day of school inexcusable. >> reporter: the computerized scheduling program ran in to major problems months before the first day of class, yet

officials were unable to fix the glitches and had no backup plan in place. when the bell rang on this monday, thousands had to wait in school gyms, cafeterias and auditoriums until the grownups could figure out a plan b. in a last ditch effort the school system was forced to use every available staffer to fill out schedules by hand. by thursday, there was still 1900 students in the wrong place at the wrong time. the school system is hoping by the end of the day all the problems that remain will be solved. as far as what the cause, the school system says it will look at the contract it had with the software provider to see if there is any financial remedy they can put in to affect but that software provider said it has installed the program at other school systems with no problem whatsoever. 9 news now and wusa9.com. it is 6:35. jessica doyle is back with another living smart report.

it is closed brookeville road and market street. use new hampshire or take it to 108 to get back on to georgia. now, over to you. this is starting to sound like a broken record, get ready for delays on metro rail this weekend. riders on four lines should add 30 minutes to their travel lines. let's start with the green and yellow lines. starting tonight, trains will single track between georgia avenue and fort totten. yellow lines will terminate at mount vernon square. on the orange lines trains will single track between boston and east falls church. that begins on the at 10:00. on the red line, it is single tracking between grovesnor and friendship heights. every other train will end at friendship heights. work begins tonight at 10:00. expect delays next week on 95 in virginia. there will be overnight road crews and work as crews begin a project to add another lane to the highway between woodbridge

and springfield. most of that work will happen between the rush hours and overnight. no details are coming out on a lawsuit settlement over a proposed muslim retreat in frederick county, maryland. the developers wanted to sell 4-22res in walkersville to a muslim group. the deal was worth $6 million. the developer withs claim the town conspired to prevent the retreat from being approved last year. the developers and the town have now reached a settlement that happened yesterday. sports we're about 13 hours away from kickoff at fedex field. the redskins host the patriots and this will be the first test for the first stringers before the season begins. you will see it live here on wusa 9. our sports team kicks off coverage at 7:30, including a one-on-one interview with coach zorn. the game begins at 8:00. it is 6:50. 73 degrees here at the information center.
