coroner officially ruled michael jackson's death a homicide today. in a written statement the coroner confirmed a high dose of the anesthetic propofol kill the singerment toxicology tests revealed that other drugs were in his system including an antianxiety drug. murray said that the gave jackson propofol the morning he died. thousands are honoring ted kennedy. he will be laid to rest next to his brothers at arlington national cemetery. we have more on the enormous outpouring of emotion since his death. >> members of the ken day family saw a moving tribute in this sea of people. >> i don't think there anybody that would be more pleased with public outpouring of affection than this extraordinary tribute other than teddy. >> reporter: thousands stood in line to pay respects to senator kennedy. jane and lynn said they are

colleagues in the senate. wit johnson, cbs news, boston. >> tonight's memorial service begins at 7:00. senator kennedy's funeral takes place tomorrow morning at 10:30. his body is scheduled to arrive at andrews air force base tomorrow afternoon. his motorcade will travel up independence avenue and stop at the steps of the u.s. capitol around 4:30 and then the private burial service at arlington national cemetery is expected to begin at 5:30. in some ways president kennedy chose the final resting place for himself and his two brothers. bruce leshan has more on that part of the story. >> before john kennedy's assassination, arlington was largely known as a military cemetery but the gravesites of the martyred president and his brother president are the most visited sites in the garden of stone monuments to merge's fallen heros. on veteran's day, just before his death,and was grounds and was startled by the

18 years with her pastor and as teri okita reports we are now hearing from the alleged kidnapper herself. >> reporter: phillip garrido and nancy head to court on friday in an investigation involving the kidnapping and rape of a minor. authorities say the couple kept 11-year-old jaycee lee dugard in a secret backyard compound of sheds and tents for 18 years. she was never seen or heard from and even gave birth to two children, feared by phillip garrido in that hideaway. but in a jailhouse interview, 58-year-old phillip garrido spins a different tale. >> wait until you hear the story of what took place at this house and you're going to be absolutely impressed. it's a disgusting thing that took place with me in the beginning but i turned my life completely around. >> reporter: the house and compound are less than 200- miles from jaycee lee dugard's home. on thursday her mother saw her for the first time in two decades and met the grand daughters who are now 15 and

crisis that left nearly 8,000 students with no schedule of which classes to attend. at the end of a difficult week, scott broom reports there are still students waiting for final class assignments. >> reporter: it began on monday, the first day of school. 20% of prince georges county high school students turned up with no assigned schedule of classes to attend. by week's end, the unscheduled students had been moved from cafeterias and gyms in to temporary classes, but the battle is not over. >> right now we're at 1,273 students who we are still working around the clock to get their schedules done. >> reporter: now anger from parents at revelations that school officials knew of the brewing crisis long before school started. >> here we had some issues with the timing of the scheduling. >> reporter: chief technology officer wesley watts junior on thursday pointed to the $4.1 million computer system called school max. saying installation of the system caused delays in the scheduling process all the way

back in may. then software glitches and patches ate up more time. schedules usually furnished in early august weren't done until the last minute. >> at that time it was the week before school, the thursday and friday before school. we found out this issue on the first day in terms of the number of students who had holes in their schedule. >> reporter: on thursday, another computer crash had guidance counselors working out schedules behind. in hindsight the superintendent say he would not have delayed the opening of schools because 80% of students did have a valid schedule. but now by week's end it is clear the scheduling crisis slow everyone down. in upper marlboro, scott broom, 9 news now and wusa9.com. the school max system is used in lore districts including los angeles and puerto rico. the body of a man found rock creek park. police reported a jogger spotted a body in the water around 11:00 this morning.

the identity of the man and the cause of death remain under investigation tonight. police say there are no apparent signs of foul play. a maryland man is facing animal cruelty charges for allegedly throwing a chihuahua off a bridge. police say 34year -old david beard got in to an argument with the dog's inners outside of their frederick county home. they say beers grabbed the 4- pound dog, threw the dog of a bridge. zoe was never found and beers is due in court on september 17th. are you feeling lucky we are one drawing away from possibly the largest lottery jackpot in the country's history. danny continues to cit is but it is causing rough surf along the carolina beaches.

program obviously very popular with consumers and auto dealers, but it had one unintended consequence. >> because it hurt the charities that depend on vehicle donations and jessica doyle explains. >> this is mel wood's conservatory and this is where we operate our horticultural program. >> one piece of the operation benefits a community funded in part by vehicle donations. they dropped sharply after cash for clunkers kicked in. jay thomas says for july and august. >> in the neighborhood of between 100 and maybe $120,000 lost for our program. >> reporter: melwood vehicle donations dropped 16% in july alone. volunteers of america saw its donations drop 13% nationwide so far for august and the impact could continue. the cash for clunkers program took 700,000 older high-energy gas guzzlers off the road. the same profile of vehicles

that typically get donated. >> we're afraid that people who may have donated in the fall months would have rushed to qualify their car for cash for clunkers, which would make it a lighter fall. >> reporter: goodwill of greater washington is predicting a drop up to 20% in donations this the last three months of the year. >> car donation charities have their concerns about the future but there is a bill moving through congress that is leading to optimism. >> that bill would raise the limit for a minimum charitable deduction on a car from $500 to $2,500. >> reporter: allowing consumers to get a bigger tax break. that might be just the incentive they need to donate the old car in the driveway, if they haven't already turned it in during cash for clunkers. the bill entitled hr 571 would reinstitute some of the tax benefits for vehicle donations. since that irs rule change donations have been cut in half even before cash for clunkers.

welcome back, everyone. let's recap the stories in the news now. a flash flood watch is in affect now for our entire area. thunderstorms this afternoon already caused some streets flooding in our area, and more storms and heavy rain are expected through the evening. the man accused of kidnapping a girl 18 years ago and fathering two of her children just appeared in court. the suspect's father, manuel says his son is absolutely out of his mind. phillip garrido allegedly kept jaycee lee dugard and two children captive in a makeshift housing behind his home. >> reporter: and a private memorial service will take place tonight for senator edward kennedy at the kennedy presidential library in boston.

public viewing of the flag- draped casket ended this afternoon. a funeral mass will be held in boston tomorrow morning and senator kennedy will be buried tomorrow morning at arlington national cemetery. meanwhile, a local girl will be forever known as senator kennedy's last reading buddy. >> when he could no longer come to see her every tuesday he sent a dc elementary school student a letter. ken mcleod has the story. >> the very shy soft-spoken third grader showed me the book ted kennedy gave her as a birthday gift. >> he asked when my birthday was and he would say that's pretty close. >> reporter: it was so much more than that. almost every tuesday as part of a literacy program everybody wins kennedy came to brent elementary school and read to students, most often lorne. >> he didn't want the hoopla and attention but he would come through the back door and his dogs often waiting for him.

>> he didn't really share much about himself. >> reporter: but they did share books and friendships and sometimes playing rock, paper scissors to decide who would read the next page. she wrote get well cards when he was sick and has cried a lot since his death. >> she has taken it pretty good to be 8 years old and i let her read his book and look at his picture and we talk about it and tell her she can talk to me anytime. >> reporter: it seems the booming voice settled softly in the ear and heart of one young girl. >> you see this big man on tv and he's going at it with other senators and people on the hill and he comes in and he was a gentle giant with the kids. >> he was a very busy man so he had to read the time that he had. >> reporter: and now the flag outside of her school has been lowered for the big voice that will read to lorne no more.

in washington, ken mcleod. >> reporter: the life and legacy of senator ted kennedy will be the focus of this week's face the nation. joining us is the host and chief washington correspondent bob schiffer. after so many years of covering the goings on at the capitol you must have so many personal memories of ted kennedy. >> i was thinking i have spent a good part of my professional career covering one kennedy or another. i was in dallas at the assassination of course of john kennedy when i came to washington my first assignment was to try to track down and get interviews with the people who were with senator kennedy out at chap quitic. on that fateful night i had just come to work here when that happened and then i came to know senator kennedy throughout the years. interviewed him many times. it's amazing when i look back at it how much of the time reporters of the last half of

the 20th century how much time those of us who covered politics covered it with the kennedys. so indeed i do have many memories. i asked bob doll on friday. i said how is this this man could make these so partisan speeches and he could make a good political speech, say the things he did and still retain the great relationships that he had with republicans and conservatives and senator dole told me he said, you know, he could make those speeches but he said he could convince you that he wasn't really talking about you [ laughter ] >> i think when you come down to it that may be it. he never let it get personal. >> he stuck to his guns but didn't make it personal with his opponent. >> that's why he built up so many friendships. i truly think if you took a secret vote in the senate senator kennedy would have been elected the most popular. >> and who's going to be joining you to talk about this

area for tech students. investigators say it appears both were shot. one was found inside of a car and the other outside. investigators have not released any information on suspects or a motive for the killings. a dozen students are recovering from quite a scare in atlanta. the 7th through 12th graders were on the school bus when a shirtless man jumped on board and took control. they say eric pittman overpewerred the driver and abandoned the wheel as the bus started to go down a hill. >> kids were jumping off the bus as the bus moved down the roadway and i seen, they had uniforms on and i didn't know what was going on at first. i seen a young lady that said help us. help us. somebody hijacked our bus. >> reporter: most of the students were able to jump off the back of the bus birth crashed. two ended up suffering minor injuries. pittman is in custody. police have yet to announce what they will charge him with. in tonight's hero central

segment, we have the amazing story of a local boy's effort and some big-time recognition. do you remember what you were thinking when you were 10 years old? probably nothing like one arlington teenager did. and when he was that age, digital correspondent, kristin fisher has his story. >> winston duncan was only 10 years old when he took a trip to africa. what he saw changed his life. >> i saw an older woman and young boy and they are walking down the street and they both looked tired. i thought why not give them bikes. everyone has an old bike. bikes can be used everywhere and that's where it started. >> i thought he was pretty silly really. and then he sat down and explained to me, very reasonable that there was no infrastructure -- and i'm not sure where he got the word infrastructure but there was no infrastructure to support cars in africa so he was going to send bikes to africa.
