route 4, route 5, crane highway, all of the roads are clear. north of the district, drivers are moving at speed as we look here at university. and finally wrap it up out of baltimore. 95 and the bw parkway so far so smooth as drivers make their way to 495. now, over to jessica. this morning more than 140,000 students are heading back to class in the area's second biggest school system, montgomery county. kristin fisher is live in gaithersburg with more. good morning, kristin. >> good morning evidence jessica. you said it best. it is opening day for the montgomery county public school system and we are two hours away from the opening bell here at quince orchard high school in gaithersburg. this is one of 200 schools opening today in the montgomery county school system which means 142,000 students will be returning to school this morning, along with 11,000

teachers. and one of the big things this morning on the minds of many parents and teachers is of course the swine flu. now, on friday, the superintendent of montgomery county public schools, jerry weiss was on wtop radio talking about how montgomery county public schools will handle the swine flu this year. here's what he had to say. >> we will treat it as the regular flu and encouraging everyone to get the regular flu shots because that's what we have been doing. we have been communicating with our parents. >> of course one of the other things many of the public schools including montgomery county public school system is asking all parents to do is if your child shows symptoms of the flu keep them at home. for other strategies as to how montgomery county public schools will be combating the

swine flu this year, we will be speaking to the superintendent at 6:30. for now back to you. >> thank you, kristin. students in prince georges county started classes a week ago today but as of friday afternoon, more than 1,000 students there didn't have class schedules. at first 8,000 students didn't have schedules. school officials are blaming glitches with the $4.1 million scheduling system called school max. students at catholic schools in the district and maryland suburbs returned to classes today. in dc, those are saint francis xavier, st. peter school, ourly did of -- our lady of victory and saint augustine. a student at the university of maryland is hospitalized this morning after surviving a four-story fall. the 20-year-old ll from the

garage at the business school in the middle of the night. less are not confirming whether wacol hos involved but several witnesses quoted in the campus paper say the man was intoxicated. >> it looks like they have orange things on the windows. so, yeah, i feel like you have to be either real drunk -- >> reporter: fall classes at the campus start later this morning. police have not released the student's name and are continuing their investigation. a maryland driver faces dui and other charges in the death of a teenager. 16-year-old -- benjamin died when riding his bike when a car struck him. now he man is charged with causing a life-threatening injury while driving under the influence. and court documents show he has a prior drug-related arrest. time for a first "living $mart" report of the morning.

wall street starts looking to revive last week's winning streak. it took a pause on friday after the longest streak of gains in over two years but so far today investors have been punching the sell button. asian markets headed lower. wall street ended last week on a down note with the dow falling 36. the nasdaq gain one and the s&p dropped by two. starting tomorrow, most of those annoying telemarketing calls could be stopped from coming to your home. the federal trade commission banned robo calls unless the recipient gives permission to get them. they face fines up to $15,000 per call. er there are exceptions recorded calls from politicians, charitable portions and debt collections. l how much government has

made out of the bail out of the banking system. for the second time there is a party of 13 in space. the shuttle discovered with the international space station last night and the seven person crew joined the six already on board. after several delays the shuttle launched on friday. the crew brought thousands of pounds of equipment to the station. investigators in glen county, georgia say they know exactly what happened and how it happened. now they want to find the person responsible for the -- biggest mass murder they have ever seen. eight are dead and one person is critically injured. a resident says she's scared. >> i lock my doors now. i try to stay in. i lock my car. if i'm only one in the car and stuff like that. >> reporter: police arrested a 22-year-old man on drug charges. he's also accused of lying to authorities. but so far they have not linked him to the murders.

autopsies on all eight victims should be finished today. look at this speeding car. it is not an adult drunk driver. police in indiana say a 9-year- old boy going 80 miles an hour. the boy is under arrest. he says he stole the car keys from his mother's purse because he was angry he had to stop playing and come home. police wonder whether their suspect in an 18-year-old kidnapping case committed even worse crimes. that story is coming up. plus, the first loss of life in the wildfires that are ravages parts of california. and researchers in europe offer a promising alternative to a blood thinning drug taken by millions of americans.

disabled vehicle blocking the center lane. more tieups to avoid coming up. in the news now, two firefighters have died trying to battle the wildfires burning in southern california. the men were fighting the station fire in los angeles national forest when their vehicle rolled off a mountainside. this single fire has consumed 66 square miles and is threatening 12,000 homes. also in california, police want to know whether a man accused of holding a girl captive for 18 years could be linked to the murders of several prostitutes. investigators are searching a property next door to where the girl was held. the couple is charged can kidnapping jaycee lee dugard. fans left momentos on michael jackson's star of fame. he would have turned 51 on saturday.

work on the hurricane katrina museum is underway. they held the ground breaking on saturday. this was the third anniversary of the storm coming ashore in louisiana. the goal is to get it open in time for next year's jazz fest event which is a big tourist draw. we had danny moving along. a dud this weekend. >> danny stayed just off the coast away from us. turned up the surf but really enthralled in to nova scotia but didn't bring us rain. now on the look out for a few rain showers this morning. i will show you those in a moment but first the bus stop

lane. volume is light so no big delays at this time. push that over to 66 eastbound. through centreville we are tracking those head lights making their way though the district. 270 southbound. no problems here, as well. this is a shot at father hurley like this to the split. to the beltway and take you over around colesville road. north of the district we are all clear. 50 westbound from this ebay bridge to bowie to the capital beltway, nothing but green cars and drivers are moving at speed. jessica, over to you. in living well headlines a warning about a new, more powerful form of the h1n1 flu. the world health organization says the new form goes straight to the lungs and can cause severe illness and require extensive hospital treatment. some countries report as many as 15% of patients have the more potent form. new research suggests surgery does a better job of preventing strokes than

angioplasty. they show within eight years of followup, 11% of patients suffered strokes. compare to 8% of those who went under the knife. the research shows the surgery to be safer. millions of americans are on blood thinning drugs. one of the most common ones has unwelcome side effects. but an alternative may be on the horizon. >> reporter: after a heart attack a drug like qume din can be a lifesaver but life on qume din can be a royal pain. >> like having a father in law, a nuisance but necessary. >> reporter: bill is among the 3 million americans taking the blood thinner. like most of him he suffers from atreial fibrillation, irregular heart beat. when they don't beat in sync, stroke is a major risk and blood clots can form. >> there are side effects the main one being bleeding. >> that is because it needs to

be closely watched. sometimes it thins the blood too much. and other times not enough and that's not all. >> the hassle for patients is that it interacts with different foods and medicines and they have to get their blood tested once a month. >> reporter: now a clinical study of a german drug, 18,000 patients from 44 countries all suffering from irregular heart beat were studied for two years the result, this the german drug was three times more effective than qume din at reducing the risk of stroke without the need for frequent blood tests. >> this study is huge because all doctors, nurses and patients who need to take this have been waiting for a medication that doesn't need the constant checking and not so variable it puts them at risk. >> reporter: a sweet dream for patients like bill. >> ecstatic if there were a replacement. >> reporter: it has side effects, too indigestion and a

some george washington students headed to campus this weekend to start college. a woman shot to death on saturday night. debra anne brown was found in the 2900 block of 14th street. so far no arrests have been made this that case. montgomery county police may have new clues in the murder of a 63-year-old man. silver spring resident was found dead yesterday morning outside of his house on university boulevard. an the same time, police found two men with gunshot wounds a nearby hospital. they say the two cases could be linked. the "washington post" published part of the 1989 paper written by bob mcdonald when he was a graduate student. the paper urges republicans to

as we re whisked away and told that vicki kennedy wanted to come and visit her late husband. ted kennedy's widow is eligible to be buried there. kennedy is the 156th law maker to be buried at arlington national cemetery. surae chinn, back to you. massachusetts governor duval patrick will decide when to hold a special election to fill kennedy's seat. it is expected to be in mid to late january but he could appoint an interim replacement. many political pundits are suggesting suggesting victoria show so she can cast a vote on the bill. and plus, you don't have to go with pricy brands to get an athletic shoe that works for you. that story coming up. the new mcdonald's bacon and cheese angus third pounder.
