vovo. lus fr toto powder llst me a metro report. all trains are on time. breaking news out of frederick, maryland. firefighters are on the scene of a fire at victoria square. it bebeen gang around 7:00 this morning. one person was burned in the fire. they were flown to a burn center. the cause is under investigation. today schools within the largest educational system in the state of maryland will open their doors. public schools in montgomery county will welcome back 142,000 students. >> and that does not include students enrolled in parochial or private school students. kristin fisher is outside of quince orchard high school with a preview. kristin? >> good morning, jessica. the first day of school is well

underway for the 1800 students that are now inside of quince orchard high school in gait orsburg. about 400 of those students are starting their senior year and the class of 2010 made a loud entrance in to the school this morning. take a look ♪ [ music ] the quince orchard high school drum line led the way for the class of 2010 as they marched to their first day of senior year it. >> is weird. it is weird being on the top. it is exciting to see everybody. not excited to work but other than that it will be fun. >> nervous but got to go through it. >> reporter: most say their big worry is where to go to college but for many parents and teachers their top concern is the h1n1 flu virus. the superintendent of montgomery county public schools says the district is well prepared. >> we know how to clean up. we know how to work together. we know how to communicate with

all of our parents. >> reporter: another challenge facing montgomery county schools is budget cuts. employees have already given up $90 million worth of wages and they still have to cut some services. >> what we didn't cut back is what is happening in the classroom. we didn't cut back on expectations or class size. we did everything we could to preserve it. and hopefully things will get better so we don't have to cut there. >> reporter: despite the budget cuts and the threat of the h1n1 flu virus, it is shaping up to be a great start of the school year here in montgomery county. you could not pick a more beautiful day to go back to school it is feeling like fall and there were a lot of excited kids out here this morning. back to you in the studio. >> thank you, kristin. this morning's rush to school wasn't without its mishaps. just before 6:30 this morning a school bus and car collided with one another. it happened at randolph road

and t tourmaline. this is the first day for students in howard county, as well. no word if all the scheduling issues in the prince georges county system han worked out. as of friday afternoon, 1,000 students had problems with their schedules. last monday on the first day of school, 8,000 student students either had no schedule or were missing classes. they say glitches this the scheduling system called school max is to blame. students at catholic schools and the district and maryland suburbs returned to class today. those are -- school districts in our region are taking steps to try

to combat the rising trend of truancy. our friends at the washington examiner says the total number of children skipping school is difficult to determine but it is estimated to be in the thousands and fairfax county school officials have a new policy where they notify parents by phone or e-mail about each skipped class. they are asking any adults who see a truant to report that person to police. they use a computer warning list which allows schools to highlight at-risk students before they reach truant status. the "washington post" published an ' 89 paper written by gubernatorial candidate bob mcdonnell when he was a graduate student. it urged people to shed against abortion, femme schism, welfare and cohabitaters, homosexuals or fornicators. democrats hope to erase his lead in the polls by portraying him as an extremist. he campaigned in northern california where he met with supporters in mclean and

fairfax. deeds also came to the area hitting the campaign trail in chantilly. the first family is back from their vacation on martha's vineyard. president and mrs. obama and their daughters returned to the white house yesterday. the president is expected to work for a couple of days on his health care reform proposals an then the family is expected to spend labor day weekend at camp david. former vice president cheney is sounding off against the top law enforcement official attorney general eric holder is having a special prosecutor look at the cia and whether agency interrogators broke any laws the bush administration looked at the controversial tactics like mock execution and water boarding and declined to prosecute. >> i think it is an outrageous political act will do great damage long term to our capacity to be able to have people be able to take on

difficult jobs, make difficult decisions. >> reporter: speaking to fox news, cheney said he believes those enhanced interrogation attacks saved american lives by preventing another terrorist attack on u.s. soil. dianne feinstein says they wish the attorney general had waited for the results of the congressional investigation. senator chris dodd says ted kennedy would be terribly disappointed if congress allowed partisan politics to dominate the health care debate. the question is what impact will his death have on that debate? and who will succeed senator kennedy. with me is the managing editor of congressional weekly. let's dive in to that question. a lot of rumblings that the memory of ted kennedy might be enough to bring sides together over health care reform. >> i think unfortunately for those that want health care reform i think it is

overstated. the people motivated by senator kennedy's memory an the desire to do something in miss memory are the sorts that are already more or less on board with this overhaul. doing it in senator kennedy's memory is not going to motivate a conservative democrat from a politically difficult indifference and probably not for republicans either. senator kennedy after all represented liberalism and represented big government intervention. that's not what those people want and even though they may have a personal fondness and a sadness that someone of his statute is gone i don't think it will change the vote. >> there is a lot of talk about his widow victoria possibly being somebody that might fill that seat. what do you think? >> it was interesting to me that two of his closest friends

in the senate chris dodd and orrin hatch said on the shows they thought she would be a good candidate. to me that probably means they may have insider information and if she told them she didn't want to do it, even for a short time they wouldn't have gone on tv and said so. to me it is something of an indication she would be willing to do it. this is only for a short period of time. he would call herself the united states senator and be the embodiment of what we were talking about, do some thicks in ted kennedy's memory. she does not want to run in massachusetts and hold the seat full time. that will be one of the most wide open fascinating complicating royaling contests in a long time. haven't had an open seat in massachusetts in a very long time. >> let's talk about the election, mid to late january, possibly. who would be in the running for that? >> oh, gosh. almost every member of his congress has eye on that seat. it is all men in the house

delegation in massachusetts. mitt romney, the former republican governor of massachusetts, presidential candidate would seem to be the obvious republican nominee. although whether he wants to do that or hold his fire for the presidential run. >> maybe keep the powder dry. >> there are many state office holders that i don't even pretend to unction their motivations because i don't life in massachusetts and former member of congress that left to be a college chancellor but left with $5 million in his campaign bank account and he can spend that. >> reporter: let's switch gears. we saw former vice president dick cheney on the weekend saying the cia investigation they are looking at right now in to extreme interrogation tactics that that is essentially unwarranted and it saves lives. what your perspective on this? >> the vice president has a simple message he's delivering and his opens have a much more

complicated message. so in terms of trying to get the american people interested in in the vice president may go well. because his message is simple. we save lives in our agents stray outside of the bounds of the law, they did so in good faith and because they felt they would keep the american people faith. that is a simple persuasive message. the democrats as we saw in the last report, more complicated, ambivalent about this. can't decide whether it is better to go in and hold the bush administration's feet to the fire and spend political exalt on that and appeal to liberal democrats that are angry at president bush or whether it to let it go and spend their capital on things like health care and the environment. >> we appreciate your insight on these issues. and we'll see you next time. >> good to be here. deputies try to get to the bottom of a mass murdscer

boy is facing a murder charge in the shooting death of his father. the police say the boy use his rifle to shoot his father and then called authorities. the boy allegedly told officers he thought his father was disciplining him too harshly and too often. the failure of a small thruster the made discovery's docking more difficult than normal but it was a success. the drew is delivering science experiments and thousands of pounds of equipment to the orbiting outpost including a new treadmill. now, over to jessica. celebrate the end of summer and help to give at-risk women a second chance at the same time. that's what our next guests are asking you to do. the chairman of the second chance employment services and carol who is the chair of last -- of summer gala. thanks for joining us. dr. pearlman, let's start with you and tell us about the organization that you founded.

>> this organization has been formed to empower women. mostly abused women. the latest statistic is one in three women in a family relationship is somehow abused whether it is financial, physical or emotional. and it is a family disease that it affects children. the second chance tries to empower women in whatever way possible. they offer services from employment to housing and i do plastic surgery and i will do something to enhance or fix a fracture or whatever it takes. multiple disciplinary things for this. and the key is to get them to be able to leave the home and the best way is financial independence. getting them employment whatever it takes to do so. >> to provide those services you obviously need funding and that's where you come in, care. we have the last kisses summer gala coming up.

tell us about it. >> it is the main fund-raising event for the year. it raises funds for the great program that he prescribed. it is scheduled at the four seasons hotel in dc and we have a great dinner, dance and auction. silent and live auctions and always have an exciting eclectic crowd that comes to us not only from local areas but as far as l.a. and new york. this year we are especially honored to have a great keynote speaker. her name is louis stratton. a movie actress and the sister of dorothy stratton who you may recall was killed by her abusive husband. there was even a tv movie made about her. she will be here to speak about that and giving leadership awards. one to congressman chris van hollen for their leadership in raising awareness about domestic abuse. >> reporter: how can people participate? >> we have a couple of weeks

left. can people get in on this? >> they definitely can. we have a website. you can go on there and click on to the gala and see there is an invitation and good stuff about what we will be doing on september 24th. >> dr. pearlman, if people can't participate the gala i imagine there other ways to support your organization. >> they can partner with the organization. there's a lot of organizations or companies that can offer jobs to these women who need to get out of the house and get employment. any type of service that you can imagine a woman might need who's in an abusive situation can be used by this organization, besides funding of course. pretty much anything you could imagine if they could contact second chance. second chance is the only employment organization in the country that helps abused women. >> we appreciate you coming in to talk about second chance and the gala coming up.

and now we throw it over to kim martucci who takes a look at our weather week. so beautiful outside. >> it is. a little autumn in in the air and also a few rain drops falling from the sky. good morning. this is doppler 9,000 we are focused on the chesapeake a straddling the bay, shady side, north beach along route 4. we have sprinkles. they are kicked off by an area of low pressure. you will recognize this on the next map. this came through over the week. right now it stalled across north carolina and it will follow this front to the ocean but close enough to the intern suburbs to kick off scattered showers this morning. and they will stay mainly a southern suburb issue south and east of the district. you have 62 at andrews air force base. inside the beltway it is 64. we are climbing out of the 50s in frederick. and looking north and west we still have 60 in martinsburg

and 63 cumberland right now. speaking of the highs today north and west, only 70 degrees including winchester the mix there. warm up to 74 in warrenton. northwest suburbs a lot of sunshine. around the district, points south, cloudier and we talked about the rain drops across southern maryland at this time. they will stay there until to the afternoon again as this low pressure area heads to the atlantic ocean. northernly winds today will make it feel good, though and the humidity will be decreasing compared to what we had over the week. now, check out the lows tonight. inside the beltway, we will be flirting with 60 but pretty much all of our suburbs including la plata in the upper 50s and then as we sneak to the west some of our mountain areas will be in the 40s. 40s tomorrow morning. the tuesday afternoon plenty of sunshine. everybody is going to be rain- free. it will be a gorgeous day. we can thank the jet stream for our taste of autumn. yeah, we have 40s in our

mountain suburbs and then as we head through the week by the middle of the week the jet stream will lift north to canada and warmer air returning and back in the 80s before you know it. as we take you hour by hour, microcast nine shows how the rain will be leaving our southern and eastern suburbs of piedmont and the coastal areas and leaving us with partly cloudy skies. tomorrow a beautiful day. so that by 5:00 on tuesday no problems on your commute home and then as we look ahead in to wednesday morning, looks like a clear start and maybe chilly suburbs in the 40s off to the west. seven-day forecast is up. a lot of sunshine incoming for tomorrow and wednesday. come thursday and friday, some clouds. we will flirt with a few sprinkles on thursday afternoon. a 30% chance then. head tock the holiday week. no problems yet. we will be in the 80s. jessica? >> i'll take it from there, kim. thank you very much. well, baseball and drugs. you might think we are talking

about steroids botchily about a special program aimed at helping baseball fanneds. with us is bobby coffee, a dc recovery community alliance board member. thank you so much for joining us. just to get started we are talking about substance abuse here. a heavy issue, pairing it, partnering with mlb, major league baseball, why put two and two together. >> thank you for having us. and first thanks to the nationals for partnering with us and the entertainment industries council for being part of the recovery month event. one in every eight adults in district of columbia has some sort of an issue with alcoholism or drug dependence and this is an event that brings together people in recovery to have a wonderful afternoon at the ballpark. in september there will be ten organizations like ours across the country that are partnering

with major league baseball. they have similar outings like this across the country. we are really excited about the opportunity. >> that's because we are hitting a milestone here. the 20th anniversary of a particular month. >> absolutely. for the organization that i'm involved with, which is the dc recovery community alliance this is our fourth year to hold this event. last year we had 450 people in recovery show up for this outing and we are looking forward to a good afternoon at the ballpark as well. >> it is to raise awareness obviously because there seems to be a myth out there that treatment doesn't really work. that it is not possible to overcome the addiction. is that something you are finding? >> it's not and i'm a person in long-term recovery and what that means for me is i haven't had a drink of alcohol in 18 years and because of that my life has meaning and purpose and one of the reasons i'm involved in an advocacy like this because i want to give

people the opportunity to have issues like i have to find recovery and recovery works if given the opportunity for treatment recovery works. if you come out to the ballpark on sunday you will see that, you know, a lot of people have found recovery. and it just is a great opportunity for people that either are in recovery or seeking recovery or family and friends to show up and celebrate that recovery. the game day is september 6th. we are playing the marlins, i believe. i want to ask you, why do you think the nationals thought it was important to team up with a cause like this? >> angie, in addition to being a championship contender in terms of building on the field, our team, in addition to awesome fans and great ballpark experience we want to educate and embrace the community and partner with organizations such as this to try to make a difference in our community and across the nation, if we can. we have a beautiful ballpark so

why not come out and support such an amazing opportunity and initiative. >> a strong message and fun atmosphere and for our closing thoughts, there could be some people watching, family, friends who are dealing with people who are trying to get out of substance abuse. what are some words that you can offer. >> well, there are a lot of people seeking recovery an the most important thing to do is reach out. there are a lot of opportunities for recovery in the district. there are a lot of venues for that. we encourage people to come out and reach out to people in recovery and we encourage people in recovery to reach out to people, as well. there is something powerful when one person in recovery sits down and speaks to someone else and lets them know recovery is possible. if you are a supporter of someone in recovery we ask you to come out also. >> we appreciate you coming out and supporting us today.

just learned that 413 students in prince georges county are still without a schedule. last monday 8,000 were without a schedule. new glitches in the computer system is to blame. most of the affected students are at duval, crosslisten and eleanor roosevelt high school. in the living well headlines, a warning about a new, more powerful form of the h1n1 flu. the world health organization says the new form goes straight to the lungs. it can cause severe illness and require extensive hospital treatment. some countries report as many as 15% of patients have the

more potent form. new research suggests that surgery does a better job than angioplasty. after eight years followup, 11% of angioplasty patients suffer strokes. compared to 8% that underwent the knife. it also shows surgery to be safer. if you are carrying too much debt, chances are you maybe carrying too much weight, as well. new research shows that people who find it impossible to pay off debts in a reasonable amount of time were twice as likely to be overweight than the rest of the population and they found individuals deep in debt were less educated and more likely to be depressed or a smoker. this can be a crazy time of the year for both parents and children. as students head back to school. why not make school supplies personal and fun to help to ease the transition. with me is liz, the resource editor of washington family magazine. thank you for coming in once

>> yeah. you know you can make them at home or go out and buy them but some schools you can't buy the stretch economy fabric. so this is a green alternative. this would be for older kids when they have subjects, but i know my children in elementary school have dictionary and things like that and those books get ragged at the end. people dad on them. you said you were a doodler. >> i was. >> but i love that. it looks like it is hard to make but it is not, right. >> it is not. take a grocery bag from a supermark and you can cut it along the seam and what you want to do is you want it to end up looking like a long piece of paper take the boat and open the front cover and leave two to three inches fold it in, shut the book and make sure it is tight so there's no gapping and fold the back cover

open and cut two to three inches and fold it in. >> so then you will foldle that in and when you shut it make sure you are crease around the book and take your scissors and with the blade find the spine of the book and then cut where the spine is so you don't -- because you don't need that area. >> excess paper. >> exactly. >> you can cut that flap off. >> on both sides, right. >> right. >> and what you need to do is this is an extra flap. >> too much. >> yeah. it is not really need. so you can cut that section off. you can also keep it in. it is up to you if you want to get fancy with it or not and what we have here is a precut.

and then we have viola. >> we have the finished product. don't get me wrong. >> this is a magic kitchen. >> broil on one side for four minutes and turn it over and then four minutes on the other side. if you are outside grilling, you want to keep the grill hot to start off with and before you actually turn it on you will spray so things don't stick. >> that's right. spray it down because it is those flare-ups that help to put the char on that which isn't healthy for eating, right. >> if you are using marinades and use low-fat marinades you will use reduce the am of flare- ups and if you use tongs that has drippings. what we are using are all low fat so there is not a lot of drippings. >> check out the tomato. you are right about it getting soft. beautiful color, sweet tasty

that's why i got them pillsbury toaster strudel. warm, flaky, pastry with delicious sweet filling my kids will love. plus i get two bonus box tops for their school. toaster strudel. the one kids want to eat. so i always have totino's pizza rolls.
