it was a private affair fp jackson was entombed at cemetery outside l.a. where many of hollywood's famous are buried. >> reporter: the king of pop was finally laid to rest 70 days after his death. michael jackson's family and closest friends were the only ones invited to attend the funeral at the famed forest lawn cemetery in glendale. his close friend, liz taylor, and al sharpton were all seated hours before the service that start considerably late. jackson's three children sat in the front row, all of his siblings, mother katherine and father joe were also will. his final resting place is what's called the great moz lee you will. he'll be intured near jimmy stewart, sammy tafs jr. and one his idles oig, walt disney. there will be statutes and stained glass around him. the singer's estate will cover the extraordinary costs of the funeral including security. >> the city of glendale received

a check for $120,000 and whether we use the full amount or not remains to be seen. so there hasn't been any issue in terms of any cost to the city of glendale and its residents. >> reporter: the jacksons have purchased 12 burial spaces here at forest lawn. they wanted michael's gravesite to be away from the public eye given that about 1 million visitors pass through these gates each year. ♪ jackson will be entombed in the $25,000 gilded casket seen by the world at his public memorial. the popeye con's death was ruled a homicide, the cause cited by the coroner is injection by another. criminal charges could follow at any time in the coming days or weeks. we saw a little bit of what was going on inside during the funeral service because there was a production crew in there shooting presumably the highlights from the service will be in the documentary movie that's being made about jackson's final months that's due out in theaters in october.

michelle, back to you. a homicide investigation has been launched involving the largest of the california wildfire, the one north of los angeles. fire officials say it was deliberately set. two firefighters died battling the so-called station fire which has burned 226 square miles and destroyed at least 64 homes. >> we believe that this is arson. and because of that fact, the l.a. county sheriff's department homicide now is looking at the tragic deaths of those two firefighters as a criminal homicide. >> the station fire is now 38% contained. most evacuation orders have been lifteded, but fire officials don't expect to have the blaze fully contained unt until the m of september. now to the war in afghanistan 37 nofrng a nato air strike targeted fuel tankers. up to 90 people were killed. robert gates indicated he would be open to increasing u.s.

forces there. charlie dag get is in london with more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. britain's prime minister is also facing a new battle today. one of his former senior advisers has resigned over afghanistan. that comes at a time when the prime minister is about to make a major speech on the war in line with the u.s. the u.s. secretary of defense may be getting ready to send more troops into afghanistan. at a pentagon news conference, military officials teamed up to rally support for the campaign. >> i absolutely do not think it is time to get out of afghanistan. >> reporter: both acknowledged dwindling public support for the war, but insist the new strategy will succeed as long as it's given a chance. the same time, they say time is running out to secure afghanistan and protect america from terrorist plots. >> and i do believe we have to start to turn this thing around from a securities standpoint over the next 12 to 18 months. >> reporter: but the commanders say they can't defeat al queda alone. britain is america's biggest

partner in this war and like the u.s., they're also seeing a growing number of troops killed in the line of fire. britain's prime minister is trying to convince his country the battle is worth the loss of life. more than 200 british soldiers have died in the conflict, but the u.s. has seen the largest death toll. last month alone, 51 u.s. troops were killed making it the bloodiest month for american force since the war began. and at least three soldiers have already died this month. with each new memorial comes a new will among forces to see the fight through. >> it's pretty hard, but it's kind of our job, we just have to push new. >> reporter: a decision on sending more u.s. troops into afghanistan is expected in the coming weeks. just how many is still unclear. now, as far as the hard numbers, at first there was talk of as many as 20 thor,000 additional

troops. it has been since estimated about half that. >> charlie, thank you. north korea continues to thumb its nose at calls to curtail its nuclear weapons program. the regime announced that it's in the final stages of enriching uranium. that would mean the north has a second source of nuclear fuel. it already has a blue tone yum enrichment policeman. experts sea the north has enough nuclear fuel for half a dozen bottoms. the u.s. calls news of the uranium enare richment a concern. now for the latest on the kidnapping of jaycee dugard. phillip garrido was arrested back in 1972 for raping a 14-year-old girl. but ga redid he never faced prosecution because the victim refused to testify. that arrest was not known to police investigating the due guard case until last week. dugard was held captive for 18 years, gave birth to two daughters, and is now getting reacquainted with her family. yesterday her aunt revealed

again 28. but ahead of today's report, wall street broke a four day losing streak. the dow was up 64 points, the nasdaq rallied 16. analysts predict that the unemployment rate edged up to 9.5% in august, but the number of layoffs is expected to slow by nearly 25,000. already more than 14.5 million americans are out of work. economists say the labor market is always one of the last sectors to recover this doesn't help the 35 million americans now getting food stamps. the number of folks relying on the subsidies jumped 22% in june from a year before. and forget about just limiting executive compensation. a group of leading finance ministers in europe is urging a one year ban. france, spain and determine any are among those asking representatives at this morning's g-20 summit in london to shut down bonuses internationally for a year. they say the risks are way too high when the mistakes of the

children who died were between 5 and 17 years old. of the 36 who died, 2/3 had other serious medical conditions, including cerebral palsy, epilepsy and seizure disorders. some of the children with no pre-existing conditions were killed by a combination of the h1n1 and a bacterial infection. loenks area police are hunting for a man they say bit during a fight at a health care reform rally. a still photo released by police in thousand oaks, california, shows the confrontation just before the fight br out. police say the unidentified man on the right in black was arguing with william rice who says he threw the first punch and wound up have the end of his left little finger bitten off. >> somehow or another, my hand ended up in his mouth and my finger ended up on the ground. >> yikes. well, rice says he's actual already not an activist on of the health care debate. the hospital where he was treated after the incident says

off the taliban so it won't bomb their projects or their people. a protection racquet far more sophisticated than the typical mob-style shakedown. >> the taliban literally has an office in kabul where it works out what percentage will be charged on these contracts. this is so open. >> reporter: the state department has spent more than $4 billion on development contracts in afghanistan since 2002. experts say the kickbacks could have netted the taliban tens of millions of dollars and are such an open secret on the streets that the u.s. government had to know. >> you cannot do anything about it. this is how it operated. this is how it was in the 1980s. this is how it is today. >> reporter: and contractors have good reason to fear the taliban. as of last september, 291 state department funded contractors, most of them nonamericans, had been killed by afghan insurgents. the state department says it's
