reform debate front and center. just today, after a nationally- televised address to congress, the president spoke at the white house. even though he reached out to republicans in his speech, gop leaders are still kept call of the president's plan. joel brown has more. >> the president of the united states [ applause ] >> reporter: president obama is trying to grab the reins of the health care debate insisting reform happen on his watch. >> the time for bickering is over [ applause ] >> the time for games has passed. >> reporter: he laid out a sweeping overhaul that would provide security for americans who already have insurance, coverage for those who don't, and slow skyrocketing costs. >> that's why under my plan individuals will be required to carry basic health insurance just as most states require you to carry auto insurance. >> reporter: the president stood squarely behind the public insurance option but left the door open to compromise. >> i will not back down on the

basic principal that if americans can't find affordable coverage we will provide you with a choice. >> reporter: president obama had a tight rope to walk, working to hold on to the support of liberal lawmakers, while trying to win the support of conservative democrats and a few republicans. still, as the president addressed claims about reform that boiled over in raw cuss town hall meetings south carolina republican congressman joe wilson shouted out, you lie! wilson later apologized. republicans say they want the focus to be on cost-lowering repairs to the system. >> replacing your family's current health care with government-run health care is not the answer. >> reporter: president obama said he would welcome ideas to improve the plan but not calculated politics to kill it. >> if you misrepresent what is in this plan, we will call you out. >> reporter: president obama will work to keep the momentum in his corner, talking able reform again on thursday.

road, maryland. investigators believe the fire began in the ngvili room and then it spread to the rest of the house. sky nine was over the scene of a deadly crash in leesburg, this morning. this happened just before 2:00. on route 7 near river creek parkway. police say the driver ran in to the back of a dump truck, got out of the car and then fled leaving his passenger to die. medics rushed the unidentified passenger to a nearby hospital but that passenger died. police arrested the driver a short time later. tax liens on 5,000 dc properties were headed to the auction block, but that process has now been halted. one of the potential bidders complained in court that the city did not include all properties that owed back taxes. the city listed only those properties with more than $1,200 in overdue taxes.

city officials will review the judge's order and reschedule the auction for october. cutting another 100 to $200 million from the budget could soon be a reality. maryland governor o'malley says it would not surprise him if he state would need to trim an additional 100 to $200 million from its budget in order to break even. the additional cuts could come next week when revenue estimates are revised by the state board of revenue. enrollment is up in dc public schools. the system's 127 schools currently have 44,397 students enrolled. the "washington post" says, that number number is a significant increase from the 37,000 students which were enrolled in the system at the start of the school year. the number is seen as good news for the public school system which has dealt with a steady decrease in the overall student population. still to come when 9 news

today we are learning more on what happened to jaycee lee dugard during her kidnapping nearly 20 years ago. we have the latest information from los angeles. >> reporter: the last time she was seen was 1991. 11-year-old jaycee lee dugard was at the bus stop near her house in south lake tahoe when she was dragged in to a car, allegedly by phillip and nancy. >> i pushed her down on the floorboards, threatened her and took her straight away to antioch, california. >> reporter: former san francisco prosecutor michael car doze is a says police sources tell him it was years before jaycee lee dugard was allowed in public. >> they put her in the backyard in a tent or one of the
