september 11th, 2009. angie is here. we have some serious problems on the roadways. places to avoid. kim has -- >> look at me and blame me. it's okay. i expect it. >> you can handle it >> yes, i can. whenever angie was saying this before. we get heavy rain which will put a monkey wrench in your commute. i am hear to help with your weather. let's start with a radar loop. moderate to heavy rain backing in, headed in here. we will be this especially through the lunch hour. live dopple that therehe pinp vienna, down towards the mixing bowl. another batch here at silver spring. right along route 29, beltville and laurel. back to the maps here is what we are looking at with the temps. it is a raw, chilly day, get used to 60s. we will break out of the 50s
9:02 am
but temps probably won't go higher than upper 60s. so many of you are getting a jump start on the weekend. if you need a travel forecast go to my live web cast it is open and i can hook you up with a travel forecast any where in the country. angie has been tracking a very busy morning. she has the latest. good morning. yeah, we just can't seem to get a break on this friday morning. a lot going on out there. we want to begin 295 southbound at the envelope research lab. an accident here takes out the left lane for drivers. you are slow approaching the scene. 395, opening up that door, this dripping camera here, soggy commute, drivers here below speed from the capital belt way to the 14 street bridge. we are estimating that total drive time 30-35 minutes. to the inner loop, we want to
9:03 am
show you, to the 66 drivers are below speed. a 20 minute commute for that. back to the maps, northbound gw parkway. once again opened up. and on the outer loop still crawling along, still jammed from 95 over to georgia. here is your live shot here. a 30 minute drive. it is very gloomy. they are at a very slow pace. finally i want to let you know we have a good number of incidents and accidents across the region. click on the traffic tab to find out what is effecting your area. this morning the nation remembers the september 11th attacks. it was 8 years ago at this time we were trying to figure out just what was going on. at this time the 2 nd plane hit the twin towers we knew our nation was at some kind of attack. these are live pictures from president joe biden addressing
9:04 am
the gathering. a memorial service has been under way for 20 minutes. the names of 2500 people who died will be read allowed. they will be read by volunteers who helped out at the site. >> no matter how lonely the world offers itself to your imagination. calls to you like a wild goose, harsh, and exciting. over and over, announcing your place in the family of things. >> that is vice president joe biden addressing those gathered there at the world trade center site remembering those who gave their livethose who volunteered 8 years ago today. just about 15 minutes ago, president obama and michelle obama observed a moment of silence at the white house [

bell ] the first couple paused to reflect on the south lawn at 8:36 a.m. the time the first plane hid the world trade centre. we are showing you live pictures at the pentagon. the president will take part in a memorial ceremony there in 30 minutes. robert gates will be there as well. he will lay a wreath at the memorial. you will remember it was dedicated one year ago today. we will bring you that and the president's remarks live when they happen around 9:30 a.m. >> certificate ceremonies will be held -- ceremonies will be held in shanksville pennsylvania. flight 93 was believed to have have been headed to the state capital when the passengers tried to regain control of the
9:06 am
plane. they were honored at the capital. the names of the passenger and crews are permanently edged in the walls of the capital's front lobby. >> there are other local remembrances in our region. at noon a service at national cathedral. a bell will toll 8 times to begin the service. the national museum of the marine corp. and the city of alexandria will observe a moment of silence at noon at market square. are we safer and wiser or have the lessons from that day begun to fade. we get answers from a member of the anyone eleven commission. we are on a slippery slope of -- nine eleven commission. we are on a slippery slope of becoming more vulnerable again. >> >> i think we have made a lot
9:07 am
of strides. >> we apologize we are having technical problems. we will get you the story as soon as we can. president obama has called for today to be a gnash fall day of service in hon -- national day of service in on norof those who died. -- honor of those who died. people will capture storys from world war ii veterans as part of the national veterans history project and at rfk stadium more than 250 people will sew quilts for the children whose military parents are stationed overseas. tell us how you are marking that day and how this day effects you. there is more coming. we will look at the fall out from this week's major presidential speech on health care plus the secret to selling

9:11 am
>> in river dale maryland police are investigating a deadly hit and run it happened last night along annapolis road, 36-year-old jose perez was hit and killed by a chrysler. the driver drove off. the force cannot continue its all hands on deck. that is because it violates a dc police contract on overtime. all hands have been ordered to crackdown on crime but she has been ordered to cancel it through the end of the year. >> the congressman who raised eyebrows wednesday yelling at president obama during his address to congress is taking his case to the web. >> on these issues i will not be muzzled. i will speak up and loudly against this risky plan. the supporters of the government take over on this and liberals who want to give health care to illegals are using my opposition as an excuse about this poorly
9:12 am
conceived plan. >> that is released by joe wilson on his website. he has apologized to the president for lack of civility however house leaders want him to apologize or face a resolution of public disapproval. >> even after addressing congress recent disapproval rating, what is the fall out for republicans, we have dr. michael fontroy, george mason university. thank you both for being with us. wednesday this came out before the speech but the poll shows 33% of the nation's voters strongly approve of the way the president is performing his role but 41% strongly disapprove. what happened and why are his numbers sliding only 8 months into his administration. >> i am sure most president's numbers go up and down but his problem has been that he had
9:13 am
such large issues to deal with coming right into office. this health care reform is apparently going to be his mantra for his presidency. he has not been successful getting his message out and his competition has been very much more successful. >> will it be his undoing? >> it could be. although i think it is still early in administration. too early to be so certain about how things were going to be done. the history of the presidential approval rating shows this is part of the natural evolution of things. if they are able to get a health care bill passed, that is reasonably supported around the country, you will see these turn around. he is tied down with an increase in poverty, employment and he inherited a number of problems he will now be held responsible for >> but it is independence, even progressive democrat that is are angry with him as well. if he can't control those who
9:14 am
supported him, is there any chance of others coming onboard. >> most of the post polls of his speech indicate that group you just mentioned, independence and more moderates were starting to understand a little bit more about this plan. they are usually very physically conservative and all of this deficit spending had started to wear on them they were starting to back away. he had a strong indication he was going to look for deficit neutrality. he said something i had not heard, he was not opposed to a trigger. it had not become deficit neutral and he would repeal it. >> the very last part of the dilemma, he does have to hold independence in his corner. that will be increasingly difficult with public option and how much this will all cost some he has to figure out a way to -- so he has to figure out a way that he can walk the line
9:15 am
and share the support. the question is whether he will be able to do that. >> joe wilson was told by the gop to apologize and he did but now he put it on the web and his site is down there was so much traffic. so if not an out right lie was the president telling a half truth? >> no, what he did was said what is effective right now. our country is not in any law any where that you are to -- >> provide -- >> federal benefits to anyone who isn't a citizen. that is a given. what he is saying is that that has never been in the law so they are not writing into the law you are going to give something to someone illegally -- >> but they are not writing into the law you can check citizenship. >> no, they are not but we have never done it in the past. we haven't done it up until
9:16 am
now. >> by the way, representative wilson ought to offer an amend tom do that. joe wilson is the living embodiment what is wrong with public discourse. rather than sit down and try to solve problems we wait until the opportunity presents itself, we can identify a problem and pounce on it for political gain. >> we don't have a national language. congress has been opposed of putting that in bells as well. -- bills as well. do they want that to happen? they need to say that and it needs to be put into laws. >> pamela, michael thanks for being here with us. over to kim now with an update on the forecast. it is still raining, right kim? >> yes and a live look at the pentagon. we have drizzle, cloudy skies. when the president starts to speak, we will be going live there from here at wusa 9.
9:17 am
i do have radar focused on the pentagon. doppler 9,000. it will show light rain for the time being. coming in just across the potomac, across dc soon to be will be some heavier rain for those folks gathered to hear the president. we will widen up the view. this rain is all attached to what used to be tropical storm ericka last week. india out into the atlantic ocean. it is sending us waves of rain today. the soaking showers right now over the district across the potomac into louden county and arden and points south, fairfax county. we will change over the graphics. here is what we will look at today. rain. a lot of it this morning. as we head into the afternoon, most of this will start to listen to pennsylvania. it is rotating counter clockwise. we will have showers sent back down over the district and into north central maryland.
9:18 am
the numbers effect the cool one. 59 at kwan co, easton is 59. slow trip into the 60s and not get warmer that. we will not be rain free until the end to have weekend unfortunately. this has been a slow moving system. it will slowly wobble away from us by sunday. by noon we still have that heavy rain focused on top of us. as the day wears on, notice how we taper off to showers. come saturday still a couple more showers around. i will be in arlington tomorrow morning for a girl's softball tournament honouring the victims of nine eleven at the pentagon. i think the morning will be cloudy but the ground will be awfully wet from the rain today. our temps in the 60s. that is where they are staying for the lows.
9:19 am
a little better, back 70s. not rain free. when do we get a beautiful day? but to put some money in the bank i am going with monday. we should be drying out next week. jessica. thanks, kim. we have all seen houses in they wore hoods that have -- neighbourhoods that have sat on the market for months. mike aubrey thanks for coming in to talk to us. >> glad to be here. >> hgtv has this show you were on real estate intervention. it is addicting. you go into home that is are not selling and you help the sellers sell. now how has the experience been for you? how did this get started for you? >> i think it is a situation i was in the right place at the right time.
9:20 am
i had no intention of being on tv. i did guest appearances on get it sold. the network came to me and said listen we have an idea for a great show. this is a market that has turned. we would like to show people what is going on out there. i think what i am doing is taking a tough situation people are in right now and showing it to people at home. >> right. now you really do go in these houses, give people solid advice. what is the formula for you forgetting these houses sold? is it a question of appearance? price? how does that come together? >> i think in this market you have to have two things in order to actually sell your house. you have to look good and be priced right. if you don't have both those things i don't know if you have the formula for success. you can look receiptly good but be over priced and -- really good and be over priced and fit and be priced bad and do okay.
9:21 am
>> reporter: you give folks tough news some times. hearing your house is way over priced can be tough to take but that is frequently the problem. >> when you talk about a person's home, that is their largest asset n. this corrected market it is often also their largest liability. people get very emotional about their propertytheir wallets. it is tough to give them news they don't want to hear. >> reporter: there has been a lot of bad news. you are a local real estate agent as well. how is the local real estate agent looking to you. >> here in dc, to be honest with you we buy and sell a lot of homes here. if i had to pick a market that i thought was somewhat encapsulated to the recession, i think it would be here. the tax credit is helping, inventory is coming down.
9:22 am
i am hoping by this time in 2010 we are passed this. >> reporter: we are still looking at price levels being below last year but maybe not falling. >> right. i think we've leveled off. >> reporter: mike, we appreciate you coming in to talk to us. we are talking about the economy one year after the huge collapse of lehman brothers. and we are waiting for president obama to arrive at the pentagon. we will bring you his remarks live when we return b@

loop. because we have this new accident at the university. drivers are losing 3 left lanes. as a result you are looking at conditions like this, bumper to bumper to route one college park. over to another situation we have been monitoring as low asly all morning, good hope road remains closed, between 23rd and altamonte place. this involving two buses and multiple injuries. officials saying please avoid the area. they are diverting traffic to those already in the area. wash tong boulevard, a slow go. looks like crash activity still there pushed off to the shoulder. drivers still losing part of that left lane. as a result of this, they are still backed up to the 14th street bridge. northbound the other way taillights are stacked 495 to the 14th street bridge. 30 minutes to make it through this stretch during these rainy conditions. take a look at our camera shot here. dripping like crazy.

56 eastbound, 50 to the capital belt way. this travel time 20 minutes, no major incident or is accident tons stretch of road. now over to you. thank you. now to president barack obama who is about to give an address about 9/11 ♪ [ music ] ladies and gentlemen, admiral michael mullen. mr. president, president, madame first lady, secretary gates, distinguished visitors, welcome. i offer a special welcome to the loved ones of those who died or were injured in an attack on the pentagon september 11th, 2001. we are here to reflect and remember.
9:28 am
who among us can ever forget where we were, what we saw, how we felt as citizens and as a nation. i myself remember the shudder and the smoke, the ship mates i lost and how the whole world changed that day. as americans, we share a common sore row for the 184 livings that ended here -- lives that ended here and for all those who perished in new york and somerset county pennsylvania. some young, some not so young. all of them taken from us, stolen from us, right before our eyes, and well before their time. our grief is real and it is warranted. but if i may, let me ask and let me urge, that we look upon this day, not only with sorrow, but also with hope for the

future, that those we honor wanted us to have and gratitude for the life they wanted us to live. let us face that future with the same resolve, our men and women in uniform exhibit. the same courage, with which they serve and struggle to ensure another day like that day never happens again. america has sent her armed forces forward with that task, in harms way, you have deployed them and in harms way, they stand for you and for each other. many of them more than one million, have enlisted after 9/11 because of 9/11. they volunteered to defend their country, to fight for something bigger than themselves. and from afghanistan to iraq and a thousand other places,
9:30 am
they are doing just that. and doing it magnificently. they are supported by extraordinary family who is work and worry and wait and who serve every bit as much. all of them know the stakes, all of them know that the people behind the 9/11 attacks are planning and plotting others, that al qaeda and its extremist allies would like nothing better than to strike us again. 8 years of war has changed our troops and their families, but it has not vested them. indeed, it is difficult to describe the selflessness i see when i visit them in the field and in the fleet, in hospitals, and here at home. so rather than reach for words i do not possess, i will turn to those of the poet william earnest henly which idly speak
9:31 am
-- i believe they speak best for the meaning of this day. in the fell clutch of circumstance, i have not winced, norcried allowed. under the bludgeonings of chance my head is bloody, but unbowed. beyond this place of wrath, and tears, looms but the horror of the shade and yet the menace of the years, finds and shall find me unafraid. mr. president, ladies and gentlemen, the men and women of your military stand before you, mournful of our loss, respectful of our duty, but absolutely, unafraid of the task before them and of the menace of these years. please join me now in a moment

the warover 1812. -- war of 1812. david lloyd george, former prime minister of the united kingdom speaking during the opening months of world war 1 said the stern hand of fate has brought the great peeks we have gotten of honor, duty, patriotism and clad in glittering white the pinnacle of sacrifice pointing to the heavens. we honor the dead and speak to the survivorloved ones whose lives are irrevocably changed on that day 8 years ago. words are inadequate to remove the pain of that loss in the lives of these patriots we can find some solace. because they lived and because of the great pinnacle of their sacrifice and because of the sacrifice of thousands more since that day, we remain a strong and free nation.

those who fell are commemorated here and they are represented by the men and women you see around you acting as doe sents for this memorial. the program that begins today is being run by lisa dolan who lost her husband, navy captain robert dolan on 9/11. she and other 9/11 family members have added something poignant and profound to this program. we are grateful and honored that the president and first lady who has made the welfare of military families her personal priority are here to help us commemorate this anniversary. so it is my great pleasure to introduce our commander and chief the president of the united states [ applause ] secretary gates, admiral

mullen and members of the armed forces, fellow american, family and friends of those that we lost this day. michelle and i are deeply humbled to be with you. 8 septembers have come and gone, theory 3,000 days have -- nearly 3,000 days have passed, almost one for each of those taken from us. but no turning of the seasons can diminish the pain and loss of that day, no passage of time and no dark skies can ever dull the meaning of this moment. so on this solemn day, at this sacred hour, once more we pause, once more we pray as a nation and as a people in city streets where our two towers were turned to ashdust, and a

quiet field where a plane fell from the sky and here, where a single stone of this building is still blackened by the fires. we remember with reverence the lives we lost we read their names, we press their photos to our hearts. and on this day that marks their death we recall the beauty and meaning of their lives, men and women, and children of every color and every creed from across our nation and from more than a hundred others. they were innocent, harming no one, they went about their daily lives. gone in a terrible instant they now dwell in the house of the lord forever. we honor all those who gave their lives so that others might live and all the survivors that battle burns and wounds and helped each other

rebuild their lives. men and women who gave life to that most simple of rule, i am my brothers keeper, i am my sisters keeper. we pay tribute to the service of a new generation, young americans raised in a time of peace and plenty who saw their nation in its hour of need and said i choose to serve. i will do my part. once more we grieve for you and your families, no words can ease the ache of your heart, no deeds can fill the empty places in your homes, but on this day and all that follow, you may find solace in the memory of those you loved and know you have the unending support of the american people. scripture teaches us a hard truth, the mountains may fall and the earth may give way, the flesh and the heart may fail,
9:38 am
but after all our suffererring, god and grace will restore you, make you strong, firm and steadfast. so it is, so it has been for these families, so it must be for our nation. let us renew our resolve against those who perpetrated this barbaric act and plot against us still. in defense of our nation we will never waiver and in pursuit of al qaeda and its extremist allies we will never falter. let us renew our commitment to all those who serve in our defense our courageous men and women in uniform and familyall those who protect us here at home mindful that the work protecting america is never finished we will do everything our power to keep america safe.
9:39 am
let us renew our spirit for that day not the human capacity for evil but for good. not the desire to destroy but the impulse to save, serve and to by. on this first national day of service and remembrance, we can summon once more that ordinary goodness of america, to serve our communities, to strengthen our country, and to better our world. most of all, on a day when others sought to zap our confidence, let us renew our common purpose, remember how we came together as one nation, one people, as americansing, united in the only -- americans united not only in our grief but to stand up for one another, for the country we all love. this may be the greatest lesson of this day. the strongest rebuke to those who attacked us.
9:40 am
the highest tribute to those taken from us, such sense of purpose need not be a fleeting moment, it can be a lasting virtue, the threw their livethrough your, the men and women who lost their lives 8 years ago today, left a legacy that still shines brightly through the darksomeness calls on all of us to be strong, firm, united. it is our calling to day and in all the septembers still to come. may god bless you, and comfort you and may god bless the united states of america.
