welcome back. the u.s. coastguard and cnn are pointing fingers at each other for the misinterpretation of today's drill out on potomac river. others are questioning the timing of the exercise being that today is the 8th anniversary of the september 11th attacks. people are sensitive. susan is joining us now. why did that happen today? >> i think what the coastguard was thinking is basically they do this four times a week. this is a regular drill that they always do. no one notices on any other day of the year so why not keep doing it? again, this is something that they broadcast over a marine channel that most people don't listen to except for maybe reporters and they felt that there wasn't anything -- it was business as usual. >> in other words, any ordinary person may have made the same decision. how much do you blame cnn for
7:11 pm
listening to scanners and then running with this story? >> i think perhaps cnn could have waited a half hour, maybe an hour on this day when people on edge if you have reports like this where they are saying shots were fired that you want to make sure that you do have this right. >> cnn though says they would have been irresponsible not to report what they saw going on. they saw the boats. they felt like they had to move on the story. >> i think it was a tough call for them because when you're waiting for that confirmation you do feel like you have to get notice out to the public and public safety is important. however, i do think hind sight is 20/20. >> given what went down, from your vantage point, how did we do? if the people thought there was an emergency, shut down national airport. do you think we handled it pretty well? >> i think so. the response was good. the fbi was there. park police were there. i think that everybody responded very quickly to it.

in the mail bag tonight allegations of racism. last night one viewer suggested that perhaps a not so subtle form of racial disrespect was behind the congressman joe wilson's infamous outburst during president obama's speech. today darren from maryland says it is obama's politics not his skin color that has folks fired up. he attempted to radically change america's economic system to capitalism to a system where the government runs businesses and the business leaders become puppets to the government. this would cause if you fervor around americans. nobody wants to rush to judgment that this is a racial incident but a white congressman calling out a half- white president for being a liar and you have the nerve to

proclaim that there is a racial component at play. another liberal race double standard. but craig from king george, virginia, says respect is the only standard that matters. the insult hurled by the congressman to president obama is neither the first nor is it likely to be the last. i feel now like i did when senator webb snubbed president bush at the white house. when we see president obama face such disrespect we can't help wonder is it a bit worse because of he is? that's really just a nod to a long history of double standards. and honestly to the fear that things haven't changed quite enough just yet. don't be afraid to put your thoughts into derek mcginty's mail back. the address is mailbag@wusa9.com. that's our report.
