from the first local station with news in high definition, this is 9 news now. hello. welcome to 9 news now at noon. i'm j.c. hayward. a group of six lawmakers spent weeks huddled behind closed doors working on a health care reform compromise and now there's word they are days away from unveiling the finished

product. they have lowered the price tag and they leftout the government- run insurance option. they are trying to gain enough republican support to get the bill passed, but they are running the risk of upsetting leading democrats. joel brown explains. >> reporter: the latest version of the health care reform bill is almost ready. a group of six moderate senators from both sides of the aisle have been working for months on a compromise. the lawmaker leading the group, democratic senator max baucus says it addressed some of the biggest concerns. it will likely leave out the government option, which is government funded insurance. that is necessary to win some gop support but it will upset some democrats like house speaker nancy pelosi. >> we will again improve quality, lower costs, expand coverage and maintain choice. i believe that a public option is the best way to do that. >> reporter: the compromise is

expected to expand coverage by requiring all americans to buy health insurance by 2013 to help offset the cost the plan would offer tax credits to lower and middle-income americans. critics call it unfair and say even with the tax credits it amounts too a tax increase on families struggling to make ends meet. what republicans do like is the price tag on the compromise, $880 billion over ten years, which is a lot less than proposals from liberal democrats. president obama has largely stayed out of the deal making on captiol hill but is expected to keep the pressure on lawmakers when he talks to union members today and he will be on five sunday talk shows saying health care reform is essential to the nation's future. joel brown, cbs news, huang. dc delegate eleanor holmes norton is sponsoring a health care reform town hall meeting this evening. it is designed specifically for

there are five colors in the system but they suggest just three color threat levels. the system was put in place after the 9/11 attack. it was designed to help emergency spongedders. iraqis are celebrating the release of the jailed journalist who made global news by throwing his shoes at former president bush. the 30-year-old was originally slapped with a three-year sentence for assaulting a foreign head of state but today he was set free after serving nine months in a baghdad jail. children danced in celebration as he went through a cheering crowd with an iraqi banner around his neck. he said iraqi secret service agents beat him behind bars and tortured him with electrical shocks after he was arrested. passengers flying out of dulles international airport are in for a new experience

today. the transportation security administration has opened a new, improved, and much larger screening area. armando trull has a report from dulles. >> reporter: dulles airport now has a new tsa security screening area after a massive reconstruction project. >> this terminal building has been literally under contradiction for nearly 20 years as we work to improve it and to bring it up to today's standards. >> reporter: those standards will now include a 122,000 square foot mezzanine with two different screening points. >> sort of centralizes and isolates the security check points so we can create a much calmer environment. >> reporter: the old tsa check point is gone along with some of the chaos passengers have endured for years. >> that will be a lot better. >> reporter: passengers will be able to access the new check point from three different areas of the airport,

departures, arrivals and expert travel. >> it allowing them to access it smoothly and the check point is expandable from 24 lanes to a future 32 lanes. >> reporter: the tsa has rolled out security check points on tuesday when traffic as you can see is traditionally light. they are hoping to work out any kinks before traffic picks up later in the week. at dulles airport, armando trull for 9 news now and wusa9.com. >> as part of the renovation efforts later this year, dulles airport will launch a new train service that will shuttle passengers from the terminal to the departure and arrival gates. an investigation is underway in to an early-morning accident in northeast washington. an suv struck a jersey barrier on new york avenue near bladensburg road northeast. district police have been trailing the vehicle in prince georges county shortly before the crash. the two teens in the suv were released in to the custody of

drew levinson has the latest now from new haven. >> reporter: police at yale university are focusing on a lab technician as they investigate the murder of grad student annie le. cbs news has learned that unidentified person has failed at least one lie detector test. authorities say it was not a random act and that brings relief to students. >> that they think they know who it is brings a sense of security but the fact he is in the community is also scary. >> it is nice to know they have someone who they think this is the person. so you feel better walking down the street knowing they are not out and about. >> reporter: sniffer dogs found le's body on sunday. the same day she was supposed to be married. her remains were hidden in a basement wall in an area known as a chase, where wires run to different floors. this has many on the campus

fenty at an event that wasn't even open to the media. a cabinet meeting at the barry farms project in southeast. we waited our turn and yvonne had a more pressing issue, trying to get her son, a college student out of barry farms alive. >> they are beating my son and robbed him. >> reporter: the mayor promised her some help. they were looking for the mayor's help at the tennis and learning center and cora masters barry won't be getting it unless the courts intervened. the private corporation allowed the registration to lapse. that is allowing them to take over the facility. >> what do you plan for this place? >> our plans are to continue the great tennis that's been going on there for, you know, the last five to ten years.

tonight, starting to come up a little bit. nose as many 50s on the map. round out our lows 54 in woodbridge to 66 inside the beltway. a shot of 50s cumberland to winchester. here's the forecast for this afternoon. the front making up ground coming through pennsylvania. we are still dry and partly cloudy and then tomorrow we will be on the north side of the front. you'll notice a cooler wind off of the ocean. this will help to coup lied with southwesterly winds across southwestern virginia. along the front we have a boundary that lifts the air and that's why we forecast rain showers. unfortunately this scenario stays in place over the rest of the workweek and that's why the rest of the workweek is cloudy, cool and damp. you can see it in the seven day. 85 today. no problems. feels like summer and tomorrow through the middle and the rest of the week we have those clouds and rain showers forecasted. as you make plans, looks like thursday and friday will have

where should you go. >> to go to the main sites travelocity, expedia those chases, convention bureaus of those cities own individual hotels and any of these places will give you good deals, i'm talking 30, $40 a night in orlando and las vegas. and use hot wire or price line if you don't care where you want to stay and you want the best price possible. >> i found you can call a hotel and say what is your best price. and do you have any discounts. do you have any specials. sometimes you can't find it on- line but if you pick up the phone and call them they will tell you. >> do all of these things before you book and you will find the best price. >> of course we know more women are traveling alone because they are living longer than their spouses and loved ones. and so what word do you have for women who have traveling -- who are traveling either with another woman or alone. >> we have an article on that
