they are mystified. white was murdered on this walkway as she was coming home about 12:30 in the morning a week ago. she was shot twice in the upper body and died with her car keys, computer, and purse unmolested. >> we don't believe that this was a robbery attempt. she was good to everybody. >> reporter: white's family says there has been no sign of trouble or threats, but there is a husband. white lived alone. for her sister says that the marriage was a step toward citizenship for the immigrant. police say that the man is not a suspect, but he is not ruled out either. >> you have to rule people out, that's true. but you know, you need to rule them in too. >> and he would always visit her as far as i know. they got along. >> reporter: meanwhile, canvassing the apartment complex here with fliers. white was last seen about an hour before the death leaving the hamilton crowne plaza downtown as she worbed as a switchboard operator and worked

at the eye center managing records. now, police told us that a lot of 911 calls came in the seconds after this shooting. so that's a hopeful sign to them that someone out there may not have talked to yet or interviewed may have seen something. a person. a car, something suspicious, maybe overheard something that might be a clue that they need. simply put, they need some help and they are asking anybody who knows anything and think that they might know anything to give montgomery county police a call. reporting live, scott broom, 9news now and wusa9.com. let's hope for new leads, scott broom, thank you. the crossland high school student struck by a car in temple hills has died. 13-year-old ashley davis was among seven people hurt in the september 1 crash.

ending their yearly safety inspection for most private cars. the move will save the city $400,000 a year. commercial vehicles such as taxicabs and buses will still be required to pass inspections. and all dc vehicles need admission testings every two years. it would bring 40,000 new jobs to the montgomery county area. but plans to build a life science center there has some residence on edge. in fact, so many of them want

to have their say. the county council is having two public hearings on the issues this week. here is audrey barns. people living near this farmland at route 28 and muddy branch road in montgomery county said they knew it was not going to stay that long. they want to turn it into a megacampus if you will, complete with retail space at 40,000 new jobs. >> we need jobs. they are worried about additional gridlocks, an area that already has more than their share. >> and we are offering developments, we realize that it is very realistic to have that particularly in the science areas, but we want this community and the surrounding communities to remain very livable. >> reporter: developers, they would like to rely on the quarters out there, who would alleviate some of the traffic. that'll be a 14 mile rapid bus or rail line, running from the shady grove metro station to

just out here to park grove. but since none of the infrastructures deal with the construction is in place, councilman mike knapp and others say they should proceed slowly. >> i think it is a good idea, but i think the residence have raised legitimate concerns. >> reporter: they feel that andrews who represent the district heard from plenty of their constituents, concerned about the construction in their backyard. >> it's the suburban area and traffic is already substantial. so i believe that it needs to be scaled back to a more reasonable increase in density and development. >> reporter: the council won't vote on it until after two public votes this week. audrey barns, 9news now and wusa9.com. there's one public hearing tonight at 7 and another at 7:30. they are both taking place at the council office building at 100 maryland avenue in rockville. 90 people have already signed up

to speak. the transportation safety administration official hi opened a new passenger -- officially opened up a new passenger screening area at dallas international airport. it's a new terminal building under construction for get this, nearly 20 years. the screening area replaces the old security check points on the ticketing level. >> centralizes and isolates the security check point. so we can create a much calmer environment. >> as part of their renovation, they are also replacing people mover with new train people out there this fall. tonight, they will consider the possibility of a ferry service to washington on the river. reports say the start-up cost would run up between $32 million coming from local government. the trip from virginia to southwest dc would take about an hour and cost $11 round trip. smoking is now banned within 40 feet of playgrounds. the city council approved that ban last night.

the city director of recreation and park says that the ban is a no brainer and that there are no negative feedback about the van. some residence are pushing for a total smoking ban in the city parks. council members say that they may consider that at a later date. and congratulations are in order for the elementary school in silver spring. this morning, education secretary, duncan, honored the school with the blue ribbon award, going to schools that are academically superior or ones that have shown great gain in student achievement levels. despite months of work on a compromise. no guarantee a new healthcare reform proposal would be an easier pill for them to swallow. addressing many gop concerns, but they may fall short of winning the republican support. while at the same time, ail nateing some democrats. joe brown has the very latest from capitol hill. >> reporter: as congress debates a healthcare bill aimed at giving coverage to all americans, some people say they don't want to be forced to buy

insurance. >> are you against this general idea of the government saying you have to have insurance? >> yes, i am. i don't think that anyone should tell you you have to do anything. this is a free country. >> reporter: she's retired and on medicare and believes healthcare should be a choice, not a mandate. teresa thinks a requirement for everyone to get coverage would make the insurance pool larger and bring down costs. >> it's just like you get like car insurance. everybody has to have it. and you are penaltyized if you -- penalized if you don't. >> both women give us a plan that is expected to span the coverage to the uninsured. everyone would have to have insurance and those who cannot afford to buy it would face a fine. the proposals expected to cost $880 billion over 10 years. and believe the government run insurance option that republicans oppose. president obama, wants action now.

>> health care can't wait. >> today, they rallied the auto workers and the union workers around the overhaul. >> how many more workers have to lose their coverage? >> reporter: they will force the lawmakers to act and still large differences among them and no agreement on a plan. joel brown, cbs news, washington. later this week, president obama, they will lead a health reform rally at the university of maryland. it's thursday at 11 a.m. inside the comcast center on the college park campus. this rally is free and open to the public, no tickets needed to get in. the food and drug administration, they approved a new vaccine today for the h1n1 infection, otherwise known as swine flu. health and human services secretary, they say that the vaccine should start arriving on october 15, and will be available at 90,000 sites across the nation. there will be enough doses for everyone. but children and pregnant women should receive top priority. right now, the house of

representatives is nearing a vote on admonishing for heckling the president. house democrats, they have strongly criticized wilson for yelling you lie during the president's address on healthcare reform to a joint session of lawmakers. minority leader says that they are piling on wilson and they noted that he already apologized to the president himself. we're going to take a closer look at both sides of the debate on the top of the 6:00 hour. if you thought that lawsuit over the red skáeupb's name was over -- red skins name was over, think again? they are asking the u.s. supreme court to take up the matter. digital correspondent, peggy fox, reports. >> reporter: can a team with a name that goes back to 1932 be forced to throw it away? a group of native americans who say the name redskin is offensive and they want that name tossed out. >> this is a derogatory of racial area. >> reporter: phillip moss represents the group and asking the supreme court to overturn a lower court decision finding that they were protected from

long ago violations. moss argues there's no continuing protection. they bar trademarks that mispage any person's living or dead. and the strive to cancel that under the land began back in 1992, with a petition. many people, even visitors to the american indian museum see nothing wrong with the name red skins. >> the name redskins is just something that we have grown up with and it is kind of benign. >> we're way too overly sensitive here. while being hispanic, i have indian blood in me and i don't see anything derogatory in it. >> reporter: some workers say that the name is offensive. >> you've got this and then a picture of a native american on the helmet, you understand what i'm saying? that's like saying black skins and putting the african american out there. >> at the time that they were registered, you look at the dictionary and it would say what is the word red skin? it is a derogatory term nor

50. but he predicts the economy still faces some tough challenges. >> still going to feel like a very weak economy for some time as many people will still find that their job security and their employment status is not what they wish it was. that's a challenge for us and all policymakers are going forward. at 9.7%. the august unemployment numbers hit a 26 year high. at john hopkins university, they used a samurai sword to kill an intruder he discovered in his garage happening overnight at the 300 block of university in baltimore. as they report, the student's home had already been broken into the day before. >> wjz is on the scene at the 300 lock university parkway after a frightening series of events. it started when a man broke into a home rented by four john hopkins university student. one of them took action. >> the student heard some rumbling around, went downstairs

to check it out. he was armed with a samurai sword to protect himself. he found the suspect sitting in the garage. >> i think that it was kind of justified, probably like in the heat of the moment, the guy is freaking out because someone is robbing his house and everything. but to cut off a hand and into his heart, that's a little extreme. >> the man lunged at the student, so the student swung that samurai sword. >> severe laceration to the the upper body, severed his left hand, the suspect died on the scene. >> a neighbor had called to report suspicious activity. >> but they did have a lengthy criminal history, upwards of 29 arrests for burglary, released on september 12. >> wjz learned police questioned all four students and they are confirming with the state's attorney office to determine if any charges should be filed against the student wielding the sword. >> this definitely changes a bit. whenever you have something like that happening out there, whenever they get like, you know, victimized so many times, you think why can't that happen here? what's different about my

house? >> reporter: and that was wjz reporting. now, when contacted john hopkins, they said it was not a school matter and refused any further comment. a student was stabbed and killed today at a florida high school. it happened this morning at coral gable heats -- heights. the school was placed on lockdown. the attacker is in police custody. at least 15 people hurt in a commuter train accident in boston today. the train was moving very slowly when it collided with a bumper at the end of the track. the injuries are described as minor. the engineer will be tested for alcohol and drug use. and caught on tape, a burning and out of control bus hurling down the street in china. the bus was empty. after discovery the flames, the driver quickly pull over and evacuated everyone on board. a policeman suffered some minor injuries when he unsuccessfully tried to stop the bus. banner day outside, do you

1983's "the outsider" remembered a courageous friend. >> he lived a thousand lifetime in one lifetime. i'll remember him most for his enthusiasm, his bravely and how much he loved his wife, lisa. >> reporter: he left the hospital bed to spend his final days at home with lisa, his wife of 34 years by his side. >> reporter: jennifer gray, swayze's costar described him as a real cowboy with a tender heart. it's not surprising to me that the war he waged on his cancer was so courageous and dignified. patrick was a rare and beautiful combination of amazing grace. how did the yale grad student die? the medical examiner is releasing the autopsy results. i'm drew levinson in connecticut, that story coming up.

4x4x welcome back. let's reset some of the top stories in the news now. in montgomery county, police are trying to shed new light on the stalled murder investigation. 37-year-old simone white was shot outside her silver spring apartment nearly a week ago. detectives are canvassing the apartment complex with fliers. president obama called on

auto workers in ohio and union members in pittsburgh to help him push a healthcare reform bill through congress. despite months of work on a compromise, still little agreement on a final plan. the dispute over the washington redskins name is back in the news. some native americans say the team name is offensive and they are calling on the supreme court to force the team to drop it. >> sources are now telling the associated press authorities have a person of interest in the murder of the student at yale. earlier today, acknowledging they are keeping an eye on some of an lee lee's -- annie le's coworkers. >> reporter: withholding the autopsy results in the murder of the yale student. prosecutors have asked that the cause of death not be revealed while investigators narrow their list of suspects. the body of the 24-year-old was found on sunday, stuffed inside the basement of the wall of the research laboratory. police believe the grad student was targeted. but students here like junior s

show who entered the building and when. returning to the california home of the accused kidnapper, phillip garrido. looking for clues to the kidnapping of two other girls now more than 20 years ago. investigators are also looking at the property next door in the town. phillip and nancy garrido are charged with kidnapping jaycee dugard and holding her captive for 18 years. she took on city hall and won at least a temporary victory. a d.c. judge issued a restraining order preventing the administration from evicting cora masters barry from the tennis and learning center she founded 15 years ago in southeast. bruce johnson reports some big names came out to support the community activist. and former wife of councilman as well. they could not evict them from the headquarters, at least not for now.

congress. in fact, highly secured green zone that came underfire. the same day that vice president joe biden made a surprise visit to iraq. the vice president was not injured, but at least one of the four rounds seemed to have landed in the u.s. embassy ground. though not any immediate report on damage or casualties, the white house says vice president biden is in iraq to meet with the country's leaders and visit u.s. troops. >> the iraqi journalist who threw their shoes at former president bush is a free man again. he was released today after serving just nine months of the three-year sentence. the journalist says he was beaten and tortured while in a baghdad jail, but he says he's gad to be home again. >> well, there's a florida woman who found a way to take her boyfriend with her everywhere he goes even though he's stationed in iraq. she carries around a card board cutout of the staff sergeant, patrick thomas. it started out as a joke as you could imagine, but it got serious when she actually
