and coming from gainesville and here all the way to the beltway. no problems this morning. >> thank you, chris. the flu and most likely the h1n1 strain is already spreading rapidly across many campuses, including the university of maryland. now metro is announcing precautions it is taking to keep the subways clear of the virus. he would have more. >> reporter: good morning. metro put together the best packs on dealing with any pandemic and deal with the h1n1. metro isic ting proactive steeps to make sure the system that movings over a million riders every day is not a breeding ground for the h1n1 flu this season. this includes stepping up an aggressive cleaning schedule and environmentally schedule.

heavy rain forced dozens of families out of their homes in georgia. it caused creeks to overflow their banks and creep up in to homes and students at a low- lying elementary school were moved to a middle school. the bad news is more rain is in the forecast for the area. >> howard is here to tell us if we can expect more rain today with some heavy downpours last night. >> got surprised by what popped up in front of the cold front. and today we will have spotty

here we go. there are the showers yesterday afternoon and evening. what is left of this piece of energy with the cold front is producing activity to our east. the front draped across the area will continue to drift south. we can't rule out showers later today. i want to go to live doppler hd and show you the activity we have right now, mainly east and southeastern shore. some stuff around baltimore. nothing in the immediate metro but south approaching colonial beach and the river between virginia and charles county coming generally east here is what we are looking at. temperature-wise, not a bad morning. may need a light rain jacket in spots. mid 60s. 64 winchester. 70 and 72 and fredericksburg at 69. and dew point have crept up so muggy in the mid 60s. the next seven look like this with that front around.

a chance of showers later today, tonight, even isolated one tomorrow. friday looks dry, which is an improvement from yesterday's thinking, same with saturday and 76. should be okay if for the terps game. see if the skins can get their first home game in dry on sunday. and more rain on mild with highs upper 70s and even 80 on tuesday. angie is goff but kris sneed has traffic. >> we have one accident to start this morning off in maryland on northbound u.s. 29 at franklin avenue. a jeep ran in to a pole. had a transformer on there. crews are on the scene. southbound getting by with no problems. to our cameras, 270 southbound at father hurley looking good. a little volume. no problems. going to the graphics, 95 and the bw parkway is nothing but green out of baltimore past 198 to the beltway. sticking with the graphics from 95 to the american legion and back, you have no problems.

nothing but green cars and everyone is up to speed and finally 95 northbound in virginia we are seeing volume start to build around prince william parkway up to lorton and no slow downs yet. andrea? >> in living well news, mixed news for hispanic americans when it comes to cancer risk. the american cancer society released a report this week timed with the start of hispanic heritage month. researchers say they are less likely than whites to develop or die from all cancers. plus the population has higher rates of several cancers that can be caused by infections such as stomach, liver and cervical cancer. war veterans may be at higher risk for high blood pressure. those with multiple deploy employments were 33% more likely to report having high blood pressure. it is 50% more likely among troops who personally witness death while deployed.

low-dose birth control pills may weaken bones in teenage girls. a study compared the the girls. the low dose formula seemed to interfere with bone growth and in some cases girls even lost bone density. time to say good morning to kristin fisher. what's hot on the internet this morning? >> a disturbing story from missouri making the rounds on the web this morning. a student was badly beaten on a school bus on monday and police believe it might, might have been racially motivated. the incident was captured on the bus ' video camera. you can see one student turned around in his seat and starts to punch another student in the face. both were from bellvue high school. then another assailant joins in while other students stand around and watch. police say the victim had been

kris sneed will have the traffic in a moment but we start with howard's forecast. >> not widespread. the eastern shore is seeing it now and we will be in decent shape although cloudy with breaks and cooler. live doppler. i will follow you guys. to our south we have a light sprinkle. otherwise most of the activity is east of the bay and northeast of baltimore. colonial beach and river side to the east we are watching showers. temperature-wise this morning, we have readings in the upper 60s and 70-degrees in southern maryland. mid 60s as you head to i-# 1 and 50 in the mountains with cooler air trying to work its way in. so, look for clouds. some sunny breaks but a cooler day with the last few with highs in the 70s. in for angie is kris sneed with the traffic. >> we are looking good to start

off. 395 northbound making the way to the 14th street bridge. no problems here at duke street. going over to 66. we are tracking the taillights here at route 29, a head lights actually. no problems toward the beltway. going to maryland, outer loop looking good. clear as you make your way from 95 to georgia avenue. a little volume. if you are heading to the district, inbound new york avenue, no problems past bladensburg all the way here to the third street tunnel. andrea? >> thank you. the federal government has given the green light for production of the vaccine against the h1n1 flu virus. four drug makers will be able to produce the shot. now health officials estimate a limited supply will be available startly early next month a week ahead of schedule. most of the supply will arrive at the middle of october. >> there will be enough vaccine. what we are concerned about is getting it to the priority

population as quickly as possible. >> those are most likely to catch the virus like health care worker and those most likely to suffer complications from the flu including pregnant women and children. vaccines will eventually be available at 90,000 sites nationwide. metro has released its plans to prevent the flu virus from thriving on subways and buses. armando trull is joining us live from the vienna metro station with details. >> reporter: good morning. those plans follow worldwide best practices for dealing with pandemics according to metro. so they are confident they will be able to deal with any potential h1n1 in the metro dc area. metro is educating workers on basic hygiene and has installed hand sanitizing stations throughout the system. in addition, there's a website addressing a host of h1n1 issues. the at-reach -- the outreach campaign is targeting a million riders that travel throughout the system every day.

guard drill on the potomac river led to media reports that they fired on a suspect vehicle. that led to a partial shut down at national airport. in case of bad weather, today's drill will take place tomorrow. today the virginia department of transportation is closing the welcome center on 66 in manassas. the state is closing 19 of the 42 rest areas because of budget cuts. each costs a half million dollars to operate each year. a judge blocked the fenty administration from evicting a nonprofit that operated a tennis and learning center in southeast for 15 years. doctor dorothy height was among the supporters at the courtroom when the judge issued a restraining order. it is a victory for cora masters barry, the founder. >> here's something that is really working with our children and families in an

. if you are making your way to the district no major issues to contend with. more coming up. in the news now, there is no word if a johns hopkins student used a samurai sword to defend himself against an intruder will face charges. he student heard noises in his home's garage area and grabbed the sword for protection.

once in the garage the burglar lunged at the student and cut off the man's left hand. the intruder died at the scene. police say he had a long history of burglaries and break ins. fbi agents searching for bomb-making material say nothing was found in flushing, new york area. they were done because a target of an investigation stayed in one of the homes. that man is being investigated because he sent e-mails to people in pakistan who are believed to have some connection to members of al- qaeda. he says the e-mails are sent to family members, most to his wife. japan has a new prime minister who promises to reinvigorate the world's second largest economy and shake up government with his left of center party. parliament has elected long time opposition leader the prime minister after 50 years of unbroken rule by
