president. good to have you with us. >> backers predict it would bring in 40,000 jobs. the county executive says this is a project that, a call to action that you can't afford not to heed. the expansiveness of this project, is that incentive enough to go with that? >> no. the life sciences aspect of it is wonderful. we have a life sciences center that has plenty of room to expand. the question is how much development can that area take. it is a suburben area and if you went to the full amount proposed by the planning board which will triple the number of jobs there it would overwhelm the area with traffic. the amount of jobs approved there, if it was accepted, what the planning board proposed would equal downtown bethesda and nih combined but you don't have two metro stations there. the use is good and i'm sure some expansions but can't be as much as proposed or it will
9:16 am
overwhelm the area with traffic. >> they say their homes would be destroyed and they don't want to move to downtown silver springs and that's why they moved there but you have to look at the jobs and the industry it would bring and the tax revenue. >> certainly the life sciences industry is very appealing but 17,000 jobs could be added already in terms of the approved plan in place right now. so it is not an all or nothing kind of thing. i believe the goal to expand the life sciences can be accomplished and still not overwhelming the area. i think it needs to be scaled back, but we can see growth in the life sciences and we do want that. >> reporter: you had to many people in the meeting that you are carrying it over. when will the next session be and whether it be the last session. >> we have 45 last night and we have another 45. the council is listening to toe public and then the committee will make a recommendation to the full body. on the i-270 expansion.
9:17 am
the council has been hearing from a lot of entities environmentalists, public transit proponents the county executive, county planning board. did you make a decision on i- 270 expansion yesterday? >> we are waiting to hear back from the state. the council proposedded a number of questions on the use of different options so we are waiting to hear back. but the state saw numbers saying if you added two reversible lanes rather than four lanes having two each way you accomplish the goals of providing sufficient capacity. most of the traffic is going south in the morning and north in the eveningings. so you don't need two lanes each way. reversible lanes would make money available for projects. so we have to do something to improve congestion on 270. it is very bad. >> light rail or rapid bus? >> transit is a very important part of it and the state's plan calls for the transit way.
9:18 am
that needs to be done. but there needs to be more transit than that. we should expand marc service and more bus service on 355. so needs to be more transit and i don't think there needs to be four lanes. think two lanes, zero re versable, would do the trick. >> we will be following this as will be going on for a while. >> it is a big issue. >> yes, it is. #
