suicide attempts, but we thought it was important to share this story with you. today, a 13-year-old child tried to kill herself at school. dc fire and ems tell us they were called to adams elementary school in northwest after a staff member found a girl that hung herself. now, the american foundation for suicide prevention wants you to know these things. these are tips. take any threat seriously. be willing to listen and seek professional help for a person in crisis immediately. and here's a phone number for you to call if you or someone you know need help. it is called the national suicide prevention lifeline and the number is 1-800-273-8255. a suspect accused of attacking an 84-year-old man is in custody tonight. 30-year-old isaac ray surrendered last night.

dc has a new farmer's market today thanks to first lady, michelle obama. alex is live in northwest dc with more. alex, i guess besides a few minor traffic issues, how was opening day? >> it is going well. more curiosity. we are only blocks away from the white house and i'm standing in the middle of a farmer's market. first lady, michelle obama actually did some shopping for fresh fruit and vegetables during her visit just a couple hours ago. the nonprofit group, fresh farm market is running the event. the idea is to give dc residents more access to buying good fruits and vegetables. locally raised meats, cheeses, and baked goods are also on display. vendors have a little bit of everything. michelle obama says the farmer's market teaches youth good, essential eating habits. >> what i put, the food i put

next seven days, 79 on friday. becoming partly cloudy. beautiful on saturday. upper 70s. look at saturday night, 58 saturday night. that's a downtown temperature. we are looking low 70s in the bushes and sunday for the redskin game, upper 70s. weather will cooperate. showers and maybe a thunderstorm on monday. still pretty warm. upper 70s and thunderstorms hang around, but so does the warmth. 80 on tuesday. 83 on wednesday and in the mid 80s on thursday. >> all right topper, thank you for that. well a man is livid over a late response by firefighters after his house caught fire. depending on who you talk to, the delay was caused by staffing issues or a policy meant to increase firefighter safety. here is dave with the story. >> i wish i could thank the fire department, but i can thank my neighbors for controlling the fire. if it wasn't for them, my whole house would have been gone. >> reporter: it took more than 11 minutes for firefighters to show up when his home caught

fire sunday evening. when the first fire truck arrived, there weren't enough firefighters to effectively fight the fire. >> the first people that got here arrived with two people. >> took the fire department to get here, it seemed like for ever. >> his girlfriend didn't want to be seen on camera. she first called 911. >> my two neighbors came with fire extinguishers and hoses. >> taking 3 minutes to dispatch the call. he says a recent policy to reduce the number of fire trucks responding on the roads and in turn, increasing firefighter safety was causing too much delay at the dispatch center. >> that's not acceptable and i'm looking to what happened. >> will the pilot program was in place or whether it wasn't, the fact is, the first engine company still would have failed to respond. >> the firefighters union believes the real problem is that recent staffing cuts didn't leave enough firefighters to respond on the call at the same time the next closest station was also under staffed. the people who live here are wondering what this 11 minute response time could have meant
