. this is 9news now. >> good evening. i'm derek mcginty. >> and i'm anita brikman. we begin tonight with a very special hero central. a story of sacrifice so profound that today the leader of the free world stopped to pay tribute. >> the hero's name, sergeant first class jarod monte. and this afternoon the president gave him the highest medal of honor. >> if he knew he was getting all of this attention, it would bother him, quite frankly. >> reporter: friends say sergeant first class jarod monte was too humble to call himself a hero. three years ago monte was killed when he refused to give up his

leader. >> it was the brave est thing i have ever seen a soldier do. >> reporter: president obama giving his family and inspiring all of americans with his story. in the moun continues of afghanistan -- mountains of afghanistan, they were ambushed. and the private was lying wounded in the open. he a bon donned that cover three times desperately trying to get to them. >> there was impact right in the center of our position. and monti hollered out he had been hit. we talked to him and reassured him. he told him he made his peace with god. tell his parents that he loved him and then he was quiet. >> reporter: and today those proud, yet grieving parents, accepted this hero's medal on monti's behalf and the men who already know well of heroes. >> a lot of the soldiers are alive because what he did on the hill that day.

[ applause ] >> hopefully the cery will provide some closure for them. >> reporter: he was from massachusetts. his father said in an interview a couple of weeks ago that dozens of relatives were coming to town to see the medal presented. and we honor another of our heroes. 29-year-old sergeant first class brad bowl was from maryland. he was based out of fort bragg, north carolina. president obama was also back to the grind pushing to reform what is a badly broken health care system. [ chanting ] >> the crowd was electric for the president health care rally at the university of maryland. he urged the students to get involved in the health care debate. and he pointed to fellow student rachel peck. she has been diagnosed with

thyroid cancer. the president said her story is a key reason why young people need to get involved now. >> it's like i've been marked. what health insurance is going to want to take on someone who could potentially cost them hundreds of thousands of dollars. so that is really scary because it's a really expensive disease to have. >> at this point, a health reform bill is moving ahead in the senate, though, without a single republican on board. and house democrats are still pushing with a bill for a public option. turning now to the other big health issue this fall, the government is already preparing to fight false information to get out there about the effects of the h1n1 vaccine that will all have us rolling up our sleeves next month. we asked gary nurenberg to roll up his sleeves and get into this one. >> reporter: there are about a million heart attacks every year. that is about 3,000 every day. so what if you have one of those heart attacks shortly after you have a flu shot. the vaccine will falsely get the

fwlam. the stories will -- blame. the stories will spread on the internet like wildfire and scare away others. >> the vaccine is safe and effective but worried. >> whether it's a heart attack, stroke, broken hip, whether it's something else, there may not be an association with the vaccine. so we have to be very careful to make sure that if there is an issue, it really is linked to the vaccine. >> reporter: the government is preparing to fight false information. >> we know that in health areas, there is a lot of opportunities for misinformation. but at the same time there, is a lot of opportunity for good information. >> reporter: so agencies are establishing a presence on social media sites like twitter where bad information could spread. >> this pod cast is for the center for disease control and prevention. >> reporter: it's placing videos on facebook and youtube. >> hi. i'm dr. joe with cdcress'sc's

the massachusetts senate will have to agree. in the meantime, a special election for that seat is scheduled for january 19th. now to virginia politics. the state's gubernatorial candidates debated for the first time today. both republican bob mcdonald and kreeing kree deed talked about transportation. >> i'm shocked that the 47 days my opponent walked in here. >> i will not rob peter to pay paul. i will not take --. the house voted overwhelmly today to take away federal funding for acorn. the senate took similar action three days ago. the congressional action follows the release of gotcha videos. an acorn employee giving advice

and the victim and then the maryland agency cornered the driver. that driver jumped out and ran off. police still looking for him. you can see a live picture now. the cops are in action. meantime a local high school football coach is prohibited from going to his own game. this after he was accused of pushing his players during practice on monday. as brittany morehouse reports, the suspension is drawing out a wide spectrum of opinions in germantown. >> reporter: football is a physical sport. >> coaches are very demanding. >> reporter: ask a former player and he knows the drill. the hard hit, the pushing. >> it happens all of the time. and it's supposed to happen. >> reporter: even from a coach? >> a coach may push a player to get him in position, in the right position. it's a physical sport. but there's nothing wrong with that. >> reporter: but school leaders at northwest high school disagree. on this night, their head coach isn't even here to watch the

game, let alone call the plays. he's suspended while they investigate a practice incident. two players accused the coach of shovelling them. so what -- shoving them. >> there were problems with the coach and that was just indicative of the problem. >> reporter: problems that one mother has heard about. >> this is his first year of coaching. he may say things to the parents that are inconsistent with the way he acts with the kids. >> reporter: kids who are still recovering from two losses in june. a teammate buried his sister after a car crash. one month later another teammate died after a july conditioning session. many here are hoping this latest headline won't set them back anymore in spirit. brittany morehouse 9news now and wusa9.com. >> now, 9news now did reach out to the coach. he did not wish to speak to the camera. a former high school

football coach on trial for the death of one of his players was not found guilty. he had been charged with reckless homicide and endangerment. a 15-year-old offensive tackle collapsed on the floor and died in 94-degree heat. now, they argued he ran a brutal practice and denied the players water. the trial was a witch hunt. this would be the first time in history a high school coach has been held criminally responsible for a player's heat related death. ahead on 9news now tonight, a sheriff's deputy says he staerd death in the face but -- stared death in his face but he lives to tell the story. plus a man almost lost his home to fire. did the county slow down the response to put it out.

components of the winds. we'll hold. lows tonight primarily in the 60s. maybe 59 at great falls. low 60s for bethesda and silver spring. 61 in bowie. andrews you might sneak into the upper 50s. more than likely right around 60. now, we get into friday morning. it's still going to be mostly cloudy tomorrow morning. cool. 50s and 60s. winds will turn southwest at ten. that's the key. we have to get rid of this easterly wind. by afternoon becoming partly cloudy and pleasant. high temperatures in the upper 70s and winds turn northwesterly at ten. but it may take a good part of the morning and afternoon to get some sun in here. a ton of moisture in the south. i mean a lot of showers and thunderstorms. this is day four for them. this moisture will stay to the south for a while. but we think next week some of this moisture will come into play for us. in the meantime, we have clouds. all of the showers are gone. most of the drizzle is over with. but we have a lot of clouds in the metro area. and consequently with the easterly flow, it's going to take awhile to erode the clouds in the morning but we're going to salvage the next few days.

actually heard the gunfire. but i knew almost instantly that this wasn't going to end very well. the guy that shot me, he was 60 years of age. this can happen in any jurisdiction across the country on any high risk operation. >> well, his leg is still severely mangled but the officer travels around the nation to talk to others. he wants them to learn from his or deal. a man is upset over the fire department's response time when a fire broke out at his home on sunday. kenny loe complained it was 11 minutes until two units and firefighters arrived at his home. >> i wish i could thank the fire department but i can just thank my neighbors for controlling the fire. if it wasn't for them, my whole house would have been gone. >> the prince george's county public safety director blames the delay on the 911 center taking three minutes to dispatch the call. she says a recent policy to reduce the number of fire trucks responding on the road and in turn increasing firefighter safety was causing too much delay at that dispatch center.

really wrong. >> he was having a stroke. sometimes described as a brain attack. it paralyzed his left side and left his speech significantly impaired. doctors at washington hospital center told him he would have to relearn basic functions, like walking, writing, even eating all over again. to help him recover as fast as possible, he was sent to the national rehabilitation hospital where he started working with this device called zero g. >> this is your balance. >> okay. >> the zero g is an overground body weight support system. and what it does is it allows patients early after their strokes or traumatic brain injury to get up and safely practice walking, practice balance tasks. >> co-creator says the zero g's harness safely suspends the patient. it has a vertical lift and small motors that simulate zero gravity. >> it's very much like walking on the moon. and so we can control how they're basically body decelerates or accelerates up and down.

>> walking mode. >> the two components allow therapists to better match the intensity of the rehab with how well the patient is functioning at any given time. >> so what it does is it tries to keep the system right above the patient. so as they walk, it follows them along. >> it helped me build my confidence knowing that it's going to help me with my balance, it's going to help me walk. >> and that i have the security of knowing that i'm not going to get hurt. >> well, clearly, as you can hear, his speech is back. he was a patient in the rehab hospital for exactly one month this summer. today he's home and able to walk the length of his hallway with a pain. the symptom he experienced was shortness of breath. tomorrow night at 11:00, explosions in the hands of teenagers. explosives 101. how big bangs can lead to big bucks only on 9news now. that is tomorrow night at 111. well, all i know is the redskins offense better explode. >> tell me about it.
