washington. whitt, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. president obama has made it clear that he wants to sign health care legislation by the end of the queer and he's using every opportunity he can to gain support from the american people. president obama is gearing up for a full blown media blitz this weaken to promote health care reform. >> young people, it's about what kind of country you want to be. we are the only nation on earth that leaves millions of people without health insurance. >> reporter: the president tailored his message to college students yesterday and will keep up the momentum sunday. he'll appear on five talk show, a presidential first. and adding to the 66 tv appearanceses and 157 speeches he's already given on the issue. and it doesn't stop there. the president will reach out to a late night audience monday on the late show with david letterman. he's also getting help from one of his biggest supporter. >> before we lived in this beautiful house down the street, we lived on south side of

chicago. >> reporter: the first lady will did her part to spread the president's message later today. she'll listen to the stories of women and families affected by the health care system. president obama says after a year of debate on health care reform, congress now agrees on about 80% of what needs to be done. but it's that last 20% that could still be tough. >> yes, there's some words that are different, but it's still a path to a big government-run health care program. >> reporter: the latest proposal crafted by senate finance committee chairman max baucus doesn't seem to be winning any republican support and at least one democratic senator admits the bill needs more than just a few tweaks. lawmakers will haggle over any changes next week before the committee votes on the bill, only the first of many more hurdles. former president carter stirred controversy this week when he made comments about racism in the health care debate. it will be interesting to see if president obama can keep the media conversationsoff the

weaken focused on health care. >> it will. whitt johnson in washington. whitt, thanks. partisan divisions are also on display this morning in washington over president obama's decision to scrap a long planned missile defense system for europe. the smt was to stheeld u.s. allies from attacks by rap, but as chip reid report, mr. obama nature of the threat has changed, so must the plan. >> this new approach will provide capabilities sooner, build on proven systems and on which greater defenses against the threat of missile attack. >> reporter: the president says new intel against assessments left him no choice but to reject the missile defense plan adopted by president bush, but new intelligence assess empties show iran and he progress on long range missiles has been slow while progress on short range missiles has been faster han predicted, raising the possibility of having to defend defense dozens or hundreds of small missiles aimed at u.s. troops and allies in europe and the middle east, so the

najibullah zazi is linked to a known kaetd l. al queda operative 37 he hasn't been arrested, but fbi agents searched his home and apartments, his uncle's home and apartments some queens, this morning. a suicide bomber struck a small hotel in northwest pakistan this morning killing at least 25 people. it was the second attack in two days near the afghanistan border. the suspect in the campus murder of a yale grad student is in a connecticut state prison cell held on a $3 million bail. raymond clark appeared in court yesterday but still won't speak with investigators about the crime. drew levinson has more. >> reporter: raymond clark stared at the kurt room floor charged with murdering a yale grad student. >> i read you your rights downstairs earlier and you you said stood those rights. >> yes, sir. >> reporter: police swooped in and arrested the 24-year-old university employ kree at the motel where he spent the night. authorities believe clark killed 24-year-old annie le in the yale

lab where they both worked. police say the two were not romantically involved. this was a case of workplace violence. >> there is a growing number of incidences throughout the country, and i think it is a concern, where things occur in the work environment. >> reporter: police are saying little else, especially about a motive, and it may be a while before we get one. the judge sealed the arrest warrant. le was strangled, her body found sunday stuffed in the wall of their research lab. clark worked as an animal services tech, cleaning cages and doing other janitorial duties. >> nothing in the hesser to of his employment here gave any indication that his involvement in such a crime might be possible. >> reporter: yale's president says le's killing is less about security on campus and more about the dark side of the human soul, a side those who know clark say they've never seen. >> from what i've ever known from him, he's a very quiet boy. stays with his girlfriend all

the time. >> reporter: while raymond clark sits in jail, annie le's family grieves. her fiance will be on serve the jew esh new year in private, an occasion to celebrate replaced by a time to mourn. drew levinson, cbs news, new haven, connecticut. and what was apparently the first case of its kind to go to trial, a quiky jury has acquitted a former high school football coach in the death of a young player who collapsed during practice. elizabeth sanchez has the sorry. >> reporter: david stinson supporters couldn't hold back their tears of relief after hearing the verdict. >> we the jury find the defendant, david jason stinson, not guilty. >> reporter: the former kentucky high school football coach faced charges after his player collapsed during a summer practice and died lee days later. 15-year-old max gilpin was running sprints with his louisville team on a steamy august day when the temperature reached the mid-90s. he tied of heat stroke, sepsis and multiple organ failure.

sword the market mass been overestimating the recovery. wall street closed in a similar direction after three days of gains. the dow dropped back nearly eight points. the nasdaq gave back six. all this despite the fact that the number of people filing for first time unemployment benefits fell last week to its lowest level since early july. this is the third drop p in the last four weeks. and despite new home construction, growing in august to its highest level in nine months. and this morning there are even more signs of a housing rebound. the average for a 30 year fixed loan dropped for the third straight week and is now near a record low at 5.04%. americans are a little wealthier this morning for the first time in two years. household wealth grew last spring ending the longest stretch of desclins in more than 50 years. overall, though wealth is still down 20% from a peak in 2007. the house has now approved the biggest overhaul of college aid programs since the '60s.
