insurance can cost lives. a new study found nearly 45,000 people die in the u.s. each year. that's one out of every 12 minutes because they don't have health insurance and cannot get good care. overall researchers say american adults under age 65 have a 40% higher risk of dying early than those with insurance. a new cdc survey shows more than 1 in 3 teen girls in the u.s. has had at least one shot of gardasil. that's the vaccine against human papaloma virus. only 18% of girls got all three shots needed for protection. this morning, we start a new hero central feature, a focus on the folks at high schools around our area. our first school is jeb stewart high and that's where we find kristen fisher who has been out there since early this morning and look who is up and at it

with you, a bunch of kids. >> we have the entire raiders cheerleaders behind me and they are, they have so much spirit this morning. they have been up so late because they had a big football game, they suffered a minor defeat, only a 5 point loss against fairfax. we are here to talk about a very special program and special heros here at this school and specifically, i'm talking about a program called avid. it has a long name. it is called the advancement via individual determination program. it is a joint program between jeb stewart high school. it identifies at risk students who are capable of succeeding in school and enrolls them in higher level courses and provides them skills to enroll into college. this has only been around for four years. it is going into its fifth year now. there are 200 students total in the program right now.

they only had two graduating classes, but already they have a very impressive success rate. so far, every graduate has gone on to a two-year or four-year college. a great deal of added success has to do with eric welsh. take a listen. >> what we do every year is we ask our faculty, who are some of the students who they got more individual attention, socially, in terms of developing organizational skills, they would shine. they need more guidance, that's who we target. >> reporter: eric is not alone. there are seven avid teachers in this program. we are going to be catching up with them in a little bit. angie, let's send it back to you. >> thank you so much, kristen. the nationals hope for better luck against their next division opponent. and redskins facing one of last year's worst teams.

employees will learn by october 1 if they are losing their job. they were not told how many workers would be layed off. >> a man is upset at the time it took his local fire department to respond to his house fire. kenny lowe says it took the first unit 11 minutes to get to his home. when the first truck arrived, he claims there weren't enough firefighters to fight the fire. >> i wish i could thank the fire department, but i can thank my neighbors for controlling the fire. if it weren't for them, my house would be gone. >> the public safety director blames the delay on the 911- center taking 3 minutes to dispatch the call. he says a recent policy to reduce the number of fire trucks responding on the roads and in turn, increasing firefighter safety caused too much delay at the dispatch center. the policy has now been suspended. a carjacking suspect is still on the run this morning. he took police on a wild chase from virginia to maryland last night. virginia state police say they chased the suspect and his

female victim to the prince georges county line. then the maryland agency cornered the driver at the virginia lane. the driver jumped out and ran. the search continues this morning for four to five suspects who kicked in the front door of a fairfax county home. it happened shortly before noon thursday in charleston street. one person in the home was injured during the home invasion. police say the men fled in a tan or beige cadillac escalade. they were all wearing masks. if you have any information, call the fairfax county police. budget cuts are forcing the dc public library system to change its hours. starting october 5, library hours will be changed at all locations. neighborhood libraries will no longer be open on sundays and on some days of the week, certain libraries will no longer operate in the morning. they will open at noon. the library system has to make nearly $5 million in cuts for the next fiscal year. at 5:35, it's time for

independent determination. i'm going to introduce you to three of them. stephanie, and matt. thanks so much for being here. joy, i'm going to start with you. what is avid? >> it is great program to help kids get into college. we get kids into free classes, get them into extracurricular activities and the goal is to help them get to that two or four year university. >> great. so far you have a very good track record. stephanie, the program is in its fifth year, but how is the program fairing? >> we measured our success rate by getting kids to tour four-year universities. so far, every student has enrolled in a two or four year university and we keep increasing enrollment and that will help getting kids to school. >> it goes until 12th grade. so you get to see these kids grow up as they go from 6th

it's a character. another many see coming out, love happens. this is the aaron, jennifer aniston love story. not getting the greatest reviews. they gave it 0 out of 4 stars, that's pretty terrible. aaron plays a self-help guru, jennifer is playing a florist. they both are apprehensive about falling in love, which of course they do. >> chick flick. >> yeah. no chemistry apparently, which is unfortunate. because they are both good looking, good actors. >> my movie beat yours, but not by much. the critics gives this 2 out of 4. we aren't doing too hot this weekend. jennifer's body, okay this is the second screen play from diablo cody. they say it plays like a parody, as something she would write. this is a mashup of a horror flick and dean comedy and the
