h1n1 vaccine. the first shots for the flu strain should be available next month. our 9 news now digital correspondent armando trull reports. >> reporter: millions of americans could soon be getting vaccinated for the h1n1 virus. the federal government says the treatment is safe and effective, and it's ready to counter any false information that may pop up on the internet or elsewhere. >> we know in health areas there is a lot of opportunity for misinformation but at the same time a lot of opportunity for good information. >> reporter: that good information will be available on social media sites like facebook and twitter. >> this podcast is presented by the centers for disease control and prevention. >> reporter: videos will be posted on youtube. >> i'm here to speak to you today about the symptoms of swine flu infection. >> i think it is a good idea. someone like the c -- c is able to use their authority and credibility to get a strong influencers to pass that message along and they tell a

overkill. >> reporter: president obama will try to dominate the air waves with a sunday morning media blitz. he'll push his health care reform plan on five different talk shows. a presidential first, the only network not on the list, fox news channel. the president needs to sell a skeptical public on his plans and he needs to weigh the republican support, even the latest draft put together by a bipartisan group of senators is not getting backing from the gop majority. >> i don't think there is any chance that these big government health care proposals will pass the house or the senate. >> reporter: the president has made 157 speeches and done 66 television appearances all aimed at selling his health care reform plan. at his upcoming talk show rounds to that and some say it could be overkill. >> the president is on all the time. if it is all obama, all the time, then probably people are

going to tune out some of the message. >> reporter: top white house aides insist the president is the best salesman for his number one priority. now they are backing him up with the first lady, michelle obama is expected to help the president pitch the plan with a softer touch. at this point, mrs. obama has an approval rating higher than her husband, around 70%. top administration officials hope that, combined with her background as a hospital executive will help to take the edge off of the president's hard sell. joel brown, cbs news, the white house. >> the president is also visiting david letterman on monday. the first ever appearance by a sitting president on letterman's show. well, the jewish new year rosh hashanah begins at sundown tonight t. president obama says in a video message that the holy day should be an opportunity for israel and its arab neighbors to repair their

relationship. the holiday ends on sunday night. prosecutors in frederick have added a felony count of an aggravated animal cruelty to the charges against a brunswick man, accused of tossing a chihuahua off of a bridge. 34-year-old david michael beers already faced misdemeanor charges in this case. the new charge means he could be sentenced up to three years in prison if he is convicted. police in prince georges county are searching for a carjacking suspect who led virginia state police on a chase in to maryland. this happened around 9:30 last night. it ended with a five-car crash near the intersection of virginia lane and saint barnabas road in oxon hill. one person was injured and taken to the hospital. the car jacker got away on foot. well, budget cuts are forcing the dc public library system to change its hours. starting on october 5th, library hours will be changed at all locations. neighborhood libraries will no longer be open on sundays and

on sundays -- on some days of the week certain libraries will only be open until noon. the library system has to make nearly $5 million in cuts for the next fiscal year. the housing market has been showing signs of a rebound, and lower mortgage rates are helping to bring in buyers. the average for a 30-year fixed rate loan dropped the third week in a row and right now it is not too far from 5.04%. a little girl's best chance to save her eyesight might be thousands of miles away. just ahead, we're going to hear her story and how her family refuses to give up the fight for her sight. stay with us. 9 news now at noon will be right back. some people say i'm obsessed with my chickens.

i'd like for you to meet a woman who's dedicated her life to helping others. this is linda, the chief executive officer of the american red cross in the national capital region. she's been with the organization for 36 years. the ceo for 17 years. i just wanted to salute and honor her because the red cross just provides so much of a service to so many people all over the world and we want to say thank you, thank you to the organization and thank you to you. she's a washingtonian, recently of the year and that's an honor. >> you know what it was truly an honor all about the work of the red cross volunteers and staff who carry out this mission and this community every day. i accepted that award on behalf of them. >> has your mission changed in any way? our mission has not changed. the american red cross is all about people helping people and that hasn't changed.
