>> as you just point out the main itself was a huge one, 72 inches, full six feet in diameter and it broke near the broening highway and dunhaven road. and as you can see it is a terrible mess. such a major breach and so much water. a lot of it is waist high or higher as it rolls through the streets of dundalk. extensive flooding has been caused. extensive damage has been caused. there are a lot of homes with basements in that part of town. we can only imagine the level of flooding we see there. you just saw a chopper trying to survey the damage and get a sense of how bad things are. it is so bad, as you know, police are sending out swift water rescue teams. as you can see one of them there going house to house to try to see if anyone is in danger and there may well be danger but we don't have any reports of injuries so far. we might note these are the same swift water rescue teams i'm told that were very

effective during hurricane isabel a few years back when they had serious flooding in that part of the world, as well. they are in action trying to make sure though one is hurt. residents are even taking out their own boats. some are making a run for it trying to get to higher ground wherever they can. as we heard from a spokesman from the city water department a while ago it will be a couple of hours before they get this main shut down and as you can see there the water continues just to pour forth in a tremendous torrent. a lot of people will be waiting tonight to find out whether the water pressure will be affected. right now, though, the flooding is the mayor concern and we don't know how long it will be before they can get that water turned off. again, major water main break, 72 inches, a huge main, broken in dundalk, southeast of baltimore. we are watching the story unfold right before our eyes. remember, if you have to go to that part of world try to stay away. they don't want your car

flooded blocking off the streets. >> huge undertaking there. as you mentioned the swift boat rescue team did a great job years ago plucking people out of there from hurricane isabel and ironically on this anniversary they are back on the job all of these years later and they know what to do to get people to safety. this is logan village of dundalk. there is a shopping commune there. so a lot of work going on to try to get to people, to try to get that water shut off. that main shut off which could take them some time. as derek mentioned with that much water coming out, you can only imagine what the basements and not just the basements of some homes but what the rest of those homes look like when that water is continuing to come out and you saw that area where the water was gushing out. that's broening highway. and the water is still gushing out. so there's a huge, huge effort here to contain a massive,

massive water main break. we will continue to follow this and of course bring you some more information as soon as we get it. we will keep an eye on this. we will go ahead an move on to other news right now. in the district, police are looking for the suspect behind a series of taxi cab robberies just this month. alex trevino is live at indiana avenue with more on this. >> reporter: the robber looks like his computer-rendering photo. they say the man is striking in northeast washington. the man gets in a cab, requests to be taken to a location, threatens he's holding a gun and demands money. right here on the 2200 block of 13th street northeast. >> everybody has their personal fear. i just don't have any fear driving a cab. not only that i have never been robbed. so that's not a fear that i

don't have that a lot of cab drivers have who have been robbed. >> reporter: allen knows the risks related to picking up strangers. he's been a taxi cab driver for 35 years and he says there is not much you can do when an unknown passenger threatens your life with a gun. >> if one robbed me i would give them the money. >> reporter: investigators tell 9 news now, no need to be alarmed but always take the necessary safety measures and never put up a fight. >> whatever is asked or demanded of a cab driver by a -- if this alleged suspect should come to the cab concede and give them whatever it is he asks for. >> reporter: the last thing police want to do is fill people's hearts with fear this weekend. metropolitan police say this man is armed and dangerous, and they are offering a $10,000 reward if the information you provide leads to a conviction for the person responsible for the crime. reporting from northwest washington, alex tremendous seen owe, 9 news now and

wusa9.com. >> we will go now to a developing story from montgomery county. a 17-year-old is under arrest for the murder of a woman in the briggs cheney area of silver spring. a woman was found in a plastic storage container in her backyard. police say a man from gaithersburg, maryland killed vasquez after an argument. the 17-year-old will be charged as an adult. a former montgomery county schoolteacher has been sentenced to six months in jail for providing cocaine to her students. her attorney says that she has apologized to the thomas wheaton high school community for the embarrassment. prosecutors say students who put together a wooten yearbook called her the coolest woman alive. she is due to report to jail on monday. police are on the lookout for a car jacker who led them on a wild chase. it started in prince william county, virginia where the suspects stole a car and held the woman driver captive. virginia state police spotted the vehicle and chased in to

prince georges county, maryland last night. it ended with a five-vehicle crash on saint barnabas road and oxon hill. several people including a virginia state trooper suffered minor injuries. the car jacker left the scene. metro is urgently looking for ways to prevent suicide. a half dozen people have intentionally stepped in front of trains just since june. the most recent victim was just 15 years old. bruce leshan has more on the struggle to save lives. >> reporter: the 15-year-old jumped in front of the train at the columbia heights station, just blocks from his school. and metro leaders are struggling with the disturbing question, could they have done more to stop him? >> we can see this boy going from one side to the other. i mean he was looking -- now maybe if that had been better observed it could have been stopped. >> reporter: on sunday a 19- year-old in military uniform leaped in front of a train at gallery place. in three months, seven people have died by suicide on metro

tracks. >> this is probably among our worst challenges at this point. >> reporter: the duke ellington bridge over rock creek park was a magnet for suicides until the city finally built this fence. trouble is, you can't really build a fence at every metro platform. >> i came back and i have never gone back to that place again. >> karen marshall has struggled with depression and suicidal thoughts. her uncle and father both died by suicide. >> the second one i thought for a while was going to get me, too. >> reporter: at the american association of suicidology, they develop strategies to prevent suicides. she is in the midst of a federally-funded project to keep people from killing themselves on america's airlines. >> the effort has to start before the person heads to the tracks. >> reporter: the most important thing is to take it seriously if people talk about suicide and send one clear message, hope. >> you may not be able to see it right now. you may need help to get to it

travelers trying to get from south florida to boston spent the night in miami instead them plane turned around 45 minutes after taking off because of a bomb scare. the fbi said someone found a note in the plane's bathroom suggesting there was a bomb on board. american airlines put the passengers up for the night in hotel rooms and then on flights to boston this morning. the threat remains under investigation. >> immediately the cockpit lit up. the screen got opaque with a light. we looked to the left and saw where the laser was coming from. >> a 17-year-old is the first minnesotan to be caught under a law that bans shining lasers in to the planes. his dad said his son was not trying to hurt anyone. if convict head could face up to a year in jail and a fine. the curtain has come down on television's longest-running soap, guiding light. the daytime drama first aired

cavaliers guard dante west has been charged with speeding and weapons counts. he was pulled over last night when the cut off an officer while riding his motorcycle on 495. that officer pulled him over and discovered is he had a handgun in his pocket, another in his pant leg and a shotgun and a guitar case strapped to his back. the nba has issues of its own. a lockout for the referees they will impose the lockout if a contract isn't reached by october 27th. replace referees begin training next week. baseball, the nats newest catcher just acquired from seattle's meet the team in new york. they may need him. flores had surgery this leak and bard has been hampered by a groin. the nats take on that team at 7:10. a pair of pitchers trying to move above 500.

the nats are on a three game slide at the moment. college football and it seems last saturday against yankees marc u the terps got a scare against a team they should beat. the problem with tomorrow's gain, is they shocked this terps a season ago and since then they have lost practically no players to graduation and maryland lost 30. the terps know a win this year may be even tougher. two games so far. maryland has given up 97 points and that's not eye opening news. >> i know problems. like i say it is not going to happen overnight. you have to be with these kids and tell them what they are doing wrong and be encouraging. can't get down on them because they are what we got. tomorrow maryland and osu. here's a look at the games.
