. the water was actually up to the roof of cars pushing cars down the road. >> we lost water throughout the system. >> there was waves rolling in. >> this was the first time we ever had something like this. this is 9news now. >> good evening. i'm derek mcginty. >> and i'm anita brikman. first tonight, flood watch. right now a massive cleanup is under way in dundalk maryland after a huge water main break this afternoon. a 72-inch wide pipe burst and the town was virtually under water. 165,000 gallons of water poured on to the street every minute for over two hours. the water was waste deep and part of a -- waist deep and part of a road was under way. >> here is washington, baltimore to the north. now, we'll zoom into dundalk. it's in the southern section of
11:02 pm
baltimore county. now we're going to zoom in even farther to the neighborhood that was affected by all of this. the break occurred on the highway which runs parallel to dundalk. there it is. take a look. we have live triple team coverage tonight from james hash, brittany morehouse and gary nurenberg. and, gary, let's get you going on this. the investigation continues tonight. what happened? >> reporter: well, derek and anita, the good news is the water is receding tonight. but for residents of this 70-block area of dundalk, memories won't be receding any time soon. the water main broke at 4:30 this afternoon. ron re williams watched -- ronnie williams watched it from his front step. >> the water was shooting up out of the ground i would say three feet shooting up on to the
11:03 pm
highway. it actually looked like we were at ocean waves and it was just pouring over here. just pouring and pouring and pouring. >> reporter: the water spread quickly flooding the parking lot of the center across the streech but not reaching the store front. it moved into the neighborhoods of water edge, turner's station and logan village. >> this is one of the large er breaks that we have -- larger breaks that we have had in recent history. >> reporter: residents waded through their knees. >> there has been no injuries, no loss of life. people used good sense. >> reporter: the streets and highways will clearly need repair. 843 homes lost power, gas lines were checked carefully. >> at this point we don't have any problem with the gas lines. however, there is still settling of earth which could affect that. but we're monitoring that very closely. >> reporter: the governor was here to offer state support to those who will be filing
11:04 pm
insurance claims. viewers of 9news now will remember that massive water main break we covered on river road on december 23rd rd of 2008. engineers here say that that man and this one are very similar -- main and this one are very similar in design. coverage now continues now with the impact on the family and my colleague brittany morehouse. >> reporter: well, gary, there was significant damage to so many families. significant and expensive. and i can tell you that for many families here, it will not be easy to get over. >> i've never seen anything like this in any neighborhood ever. >> reporter: up and down logan view drive, neighbors are quacking and talking. >> my husband made a joke of it. he said get a for sale side on the way because now we have waterfront property. >> reporter: they have parked on their lawn or other properties. >> my car is in my neighbor's yards. >> reporter: others can't even get to their home and assess the

11:06 pm
water in the basement, their family photo albums along with some antique furniture that goes way back in the family. there is the kind of damage that first rescuers have been seeing all night long. and to pick up that coverage, my colleague james hash. >> reporter: thank you, brit. the part i'll be focusing on tonight is just the massive rescue response that the baltimore county fire department and neighboring fire departments had to mount to try to render assistance to people affected by this. not only was it difficult getting the boats and the trailers carrying the boats through the small narrow streets of dundalk, but then the general traffic mess that was created by this water main break. >> this is the first time we've ever had something like this. >> normally we don't drive up to somebody's house in a boat. >> reporter: but that's exactly what chris and his advanced tactical rescue team from the fire department did this afternoon. the flooded streets of dundalk, mir land may have looked more -- maryland may have looked more
11:07 pm
like venice with rescue crews navigating in small boats. >> trying to drive a boat down the street. >> that's the hardest part? >> while there is fences and potholes and you don't know what is under the street. >> reporter: fortunately the boat crew didn't need to make any rescues nor did the boat crews from other departments. residents were grateful for the fire department's response. >> i think it's absolutely wonderful. i've already thanked them a couple of times. they're doing a marvelous job noo r. >> reporter: and as the watt -- job. >> reporter: and as the waters receded, tired firefighters packed up their equipment knowing the real work to be done will be done by residents. >> the basements are pretty much filled, so they're quite upset. >> this high. five feet of water guaranteed. >> it's going to be a long-term event. it's not going to go away tonight. we'll survive. we're from dundalk. >> reporter: and residents are going to need a lot of that kind of determination in the coming days as they begin to clean up this mess.
11:08 pm
the chief concern right now for the fire department in the wake of this is gas. now, when these basements flooded, the pilot lights on water heaters and furnaces were put out. and unless the gas is shut off, that could create a fire and explosion hazard. now, fire department crews are out visiting these residences that were affected by this flooding, but they urge anyone if you smell gas in your house to leave the house immediately and call 911. from dundalk, maryland, i'm james hash 9news now and wusa9.com. >> james hash, brittany morehouse, gary nurenberg, great work guys. you can follow our story on our website wusa9.com. topper, you have some new stories to show us the magnitude of the flooding that came out of the water main break. >> this is unbelievable. this is going to take days and weeks to clean up. this covers an area of 17 square
