hello. welcome to 9 news now at noon. i'm j.c. hayward. three men at the center of an ongoing terror investigation are making court appearances today. they are charged with making false statements to the government. karen brown is outside of the federal court in brooklyn where one suspect who was a religious

leader with ties with police went before a judge. >> a man linked to a massive terror investigation is due before a federal judge inside of this brooklyn courthouse. police arrested him at his queens apartment over the weekend on charges he lied to the fbi. the same night n denver, agents hauled in 24-year-old man and his father. >> no comment. >> reporter: the younger man was under suspicion for two trips to pakistan this year when he drove across country to new york just before september 11th, investigators became concerned about a potential bloom plot. after three days of questioning, the fbi said he admitted to receiving weapons and explosives training from al- qaeda but he is facing charges for making false statements to law enforcement, not terrorism. >> he lied when he said he had no knowledge of handwritten

material on his computer. >> reporter: the justice department says it doesn't have specific information about the timing or target of any planned attack. he is facing allegations he lied about a film when he was here in new york. authorities say he tipped off the father and son they were urn investigation. they claim his client knew about the wiretap and was trying to help with the investigation. >> had been a regular source of information for the fbi for years. >> reporter: the man and his father will be in core later today. karen brown, cbs news, new york. the situation in afghanistan intensified and without more troops it may get worse. this information comes from the top u.s. and alternate commander general stanley mcchrystal. details of the confidential report have been released and

the general says resources will not win the war but under resourcing could lose it. commander also pointed out an urgent need to revise strategy. well, president obama took his push for health care reform back to the people. yesterday, he held back-to-back interviews over the air waves. the president defended the idea of requiring people to get health insurance and fining them if they do not. during a series of pre-recorded interviews yesterday, he said that would not amount to a back- handed tax increase. and mr. obama says other elements of the plan would make insurance affordable for people, from a new comparison shopping exchange to tax credits. well, the health care blitz continues and the president makes an appearance on the late show with david letterman tonight. you can watch that here on wusa 9. it's following, of course, our 9 news now at 11:00.

new polls show a shift in the gubernatorial race in virginia. it is now a virtual dead heat. according to recent polls, rasmussen has deeds trailing by 2% and a "washington post" poll has him within 4% of mcdonnell. among respond dents who say they are certain to vote in november, mcdonnell leads deeds by 51 to 41%. just over a month ago "washington post" poll showed mcdonnell was a 54-39% lead among likely voters. momentum is now with deeds and some say it could not have been done without a controversial college paper. >> frankly, i'm insulted that senator deeds would continue this bogus line of attacks. >> are you saying you don't believe in that paper anymore.

>> no. i believe in strong families. that's what my paper was about and my opponent is trying to take a sentence out of it. >> this is not about the paper but the next 20 years he implemented ideas in that paper. >> reporter: there are two more debates between the candidates in the coming weeks before election day and this race could very well be a battle to the end with most of america watching this swing state. california rapper who's lyrics spoke about the thrill of murder and mutilation has been charged in the deaths of four people in farmville, virginia. police say that richard mckroskyiii was taken in to custody. the 20-year-old has been charged with the murder, robbery and stealing a car belonging to pastor mark

nightenbrock. they say he will be charged with killing three more people inside the same house woven once their bodies have been identified. police say the house belonged to a long wood university professor debra kelly. authorities are not saying how the four people died. >> this was a bad crime. only thing i'm going to say, okay. they were sunted to some things. >> reporter: police say postings on the site my space indicate that the teen may have known debra kelly's daughter. he is due in court tomorrow. dc firefighters are investigating a fire outside of the gabon embassy. it broke out this morning. fire officials say it appears to have been started in the basement and spread to a portion of the first floor. officials say no one was in the embassy at the time when the fire started. this is the second fire at the gabon embassy in the last month. a serious accident sent a motorist to the hospital with

life-threatening injuries this morning. this happened shortly before 3:00 a.m. in the 8800 block of central avenue in capital heights. officers say a sedan rear ended a stopped suv and then caught on fire trapping the sedan driver. the accident shut down eastbound central avenue between that scene and the beltway. right now a major cleanup effort is underway in dundalk, maryland after a water main break occurred there. about 100 homes there were flooded and residents have started the daunting task of getting their houses back in order. alex trevino has more information. >> reporter: the hardest things for folks in dundalk, searching for personal belongings they can salvage and moving forward. this family is dealing with the aftermath. under this pile of debris on their property is christmas ornaments ruined. the worst part is their home

has water damage. six feet filled the basement. >> we had a finished base and our house is up for sale. we were trying to move, and it's going to be a little longer now before we can do anything. >> reporter: the homes on this street had the most mess. crews from the baltimore county department of public works rolled out heavy equipment to help clean up. >> we are loading up dump trucks and the packer truck trucks, trash trucks. >> reporter: county workers helped residents clear their basements once the water and debris was dealt with and electricity restored. an important caution, scam artists are going door to door in dundalk claiming they are doing clean up work on the county orders. if you are not sure who the person is on the doorstep, make sure you ask for identification. 9 news now and wusa9.com. dundalk isn't the only place where people are cleaning up after a water main break. instead of a 72-inch monster pipe it took only the bursting

the manhunt for a insane killer is over. he slipped away from the staff of a mental institution while on a field trip to a county fair. he was found more than 180 miles away from the spot where he was last seen. annie le's family is moving a step closer to saying good- bye. however, questions still remain surrounding the motive behind her murder. we have the latest information

now. >> reporter: annie's body made the long trip home to masserville, california this weekend, one week after the shocking discovery in the basement wall in the yale lab where she worked. >> a private funeral mass for annie. a special time of pulling together for the family. >> reporter: the new york post reports her body was so mangled with broken bones it wasn't recognizable and raymond clark may have accidentally tripped a fire alarm with his or her swipe cards. they say they have more than enough evidence to convict clark and may not need to establish a motive. >> the only person that knows is the suspect. what made him do what he did. we may not know until trial or may never know. >> reporter: his attorney plans to file a complaint over what he claims are excessive leaks from police to the media. as annie le's family prepares for their final good-byes

seen last night here on channel 9 but there were also some surprises. manuel gallegus has more from the red carpet in hollywood. >> reporter: last year's top emmy winners did it again. >> that was a nail biter. >> reporter: 30 rock nabbed the award for best comedy series for a third year in a row. madmen took away the statue for best drama, the second go around for the show. >> hough my goodness. >> reporter: it was a big night for cable television. brian cran stop won for best actor in a drama. united states of terra and glenn close from damages won the best actor and actress awards. >> probably maybe the character of my lifetime. >> reporter: newcomers scored big. in the supporting category, christa won for her role in pushing daisies and john career for 2 and a half men. >> i can't believe it. you know, that's why they keep

remarking it is heavy because that's the only thing that reminds you actually won it. >> reporter: at the show there weren't just new nominees but more overall, 83 total in hopes of getting more to tune in. & don't flip that switch &&. >> reporter: neil patrick harris shows show tunes aren't just for broadway ♪ [ music ] ♪ >> reporter: before the show the actors not only brought their style to the red carpet, but many talked about how they feel television is going through a new golden age. >> can't argue with the quality there is now and the variety of work for actors. >> sometimes the better roles are in television. >> reporter: that proved tutu true for jessica lange that took home an outstanding leading actress award. and the show won for best tv made movie. both newcomers and legends alike enjoying the night. >> jessica lange. haven't seen her in a while. >> she's one of our favorites. down to earth lady.

it isn't until the afternoon that we get rain drops inside the beltway. we will have more clouds to get started in the morning but the commute i think will be dry. then wednesday a lot of showers around and temperatures pretty warm despite the clouds and showers in the upper 70s. here's how it is unfolding. between boston straight down to charlotte we are in good shape without any rain. doing regional travel you will be okay. dry on 95 and on 81. weak high pressure is on top of us sliding in to the ocean. it will move out of the way so the next frontal system can get here, specifically on wednesday. that looks to be the wettest day this week. as we take you to the time line, partly cloudy skies. won't be a lot of green on the screen as we head in to tonight. really even tomorrow morning looks dry. turning cloudier. over my shoulder is where we watch the rain drops come in. here's the time line. a couple of showers to the west during the day. tomorrow evening is when we have a higher chance of rain getting here. that will take us in to

wednesday, even parts of our southern suburbs and to the east will get a shot of that. recap the highs, upper 70s. lows in the 60s. we won't have as many 50s that we have seen recently because of the increase in the cloud cover. maybe martinsburg will get to 58. coming up tomorrow, despite the increase in the clouds up to 78 degrees. around 77 manassas and on the lookout for rain drops coming our way later in the day and especially toward the night time hours. here it is. the next seven is up. we will have some clouds and rain around as we think about wednesday. then thursday, the showers linger, but some sunshine returns. i thick how this looks, though, friday in to saturday kicking off with the weekend with temperatures an 80, partly cloudy and perhaps ending the weekend we will have more rain proving in here and temperatures 75. the time is 12:21. the temperature is 73. on our way up to 78 today. we will be right back this noon and you are watching 9 news
