case over a shuttle bus driver. zazi allegedly trained in an al- qaeda camp and had bomb making instructions on his laptop as well as videos of stadiums and transit facilities. and sources suspect he may have accomplices still at large. >> may may have exemployees explosives some place, they may carry out an attack. >> investigators pulled two cases and backpacks out of his apartment and he may have been planning to use hydrogen peroxide explosives, powerful enough that a few grains can create a small boom, more can do significant damage. metro says it is aware of the alert and they stepped up security after 9/11 and has no plans to implement baggage checks. >> we are an open system and we are called here mass transit to implement things that would

cause long delays might scare passengers. >> reporter: ied and explosive device stuffed into a backpack could do a whole lot of damage, hurt a whole lot of people at a stadium. again, the fbi says there is no specific credible threat. back to you anita and lesli. >> thanks for the update. >> six people are now dead from devastating floods in georgia. 17 counties are under a state of emergency and georgia's governor is asking president obama to declare the state a federal disaster area. andy nick has the latest from atlanta. >> the impact of widespread flooding has taken effect. this one northwest of atlanta, where the tops of these homes are visible, hundreds left homeless. thomas earl says his

neighborhood is completely flooded. >> trees down everywhere, water, mud, just a huge mess. >> this six flags looks more like a water park. it overflowed its banks, washing out an interstate. it's areas like this where sonny purr due is purdue is urging caution. >> in any situation like this, that's where we get most of our fatalities. >> a woman in a minivan was swept off a road when flash flooding trapped her in her vehicle. >> i couldn't see more than three feet in front of me. it was chaos and i can't imagine what she went through. especially in the last moments of her life. >> much of georgia is keeping an eye on the forecast, which calls for more rain in the coming days. 9news now and wusa9.com. >> and that is just one awful

reality for that area. meteorologist, topper shutt joins us from the weather center. where is all that rain coming from? >> they have a frontal system that won't move and they have had 12 inches of rain. you get that much rain and you are talking about a significant amount of your annual average. flooding has continued and the problem is, we have so much rain in such a large area over north georgia, over eastern tennessee and western north carolina and it is all going to drain into the various rivers and creeks and lakes and it will take a long time to go down. you can see that road is almost under water. almost completely under water, some of the buildings. we are talking 10 feet of water. this isn't like a flash flood. it's not going to go away any time soon. let me show you radar. there's more showers and thunderstorms in the forecast. in fact, there's another front to the west that has to go through. right now in atlanta, it's not raining because there's a lot of rain off to the east and west. it's a matter of time before

more thunderstorms develop there and we will keep you posted on that. we might see some thunderstorms here tomorrow. for tonight, though, mostly cloudy, comfortable. a few showers. low temperatures in the 60s. we will come back and talk about the beginning of fall that occurs here in about 16 minutes. we will also talk about the weekend. we have changes in that forecast. anita, back to you. >> if you found it harder to hail a taxi today, you weren't alone. a group of taxi cab drivers went on strike. lindsey joins us live from northwest dc with the story from there. lindsey. >> reporter: anita, it was certainly harder to hail a taxi today. the group of taxi cab drivers say they are upset over policies that cost them money. sure, it looked like there were plenty of taxis to go around, but time and time again, people hailing cabs were passed up. a group of cab drivers from several taxi organizations got together today to strike. right across the street from

the mayor's office. >> mayor fenty set our rates lower than anywhere else in the country, knowing this was going to be a major problem for us. >> larry says many cab drivers are making 30% less under the new time and distance meter system. now he is worried the city may make it too hard for independent cab drivers to operate at all. >> there will be fewer cabs. they will be more expensive. they will not be able to dispatch them. in fact, they will be less able to hail them, except at the airports, the railroad stations, or hotels. >> he takes a taxi a couple times a week and says dc is getting a deal. >> i was in boston a couple weeks ago and cabs in boston are a heck of a lot more. >> he is not so sure. >> i think i pay a lot, but i have no idea how much from that money they get. >> reporter: the strike is supposed to be completely over

with by 6:00 this evening. so if you need to hail a cab, any time this evening, you shouldn't have a problem like people did earlier today. anita, lesli, back to you. >> lindsey, thank you. we have some disturbing news out of frederick, maryland. it happened about 7:00 this morning along a footpath near the 100 block of key parkway. that's in the hawthorne square area. a man with a knife threatened that girl. he assaulted her and ran away. police are still trying to find him. police are looking for a maryland man accused of vandalizing urinals and posing as a plumber to fix them. he is accused of damaging toilets in at least seven fredericksburg restaurants on friday. detectives say one restaurant paid him to repair the damage, but the work was faulty. banks is charged with similar crimes in williams and fairfax counties. he suffered some sort of

emergency and was lowered to the ground from the fourth floor of a building on a construction crane. officials say that worker was conscious and alert as he was transported to the hospital. now an update on a grizzly murder in a small virginia town. all four people killed in the town of farmville died from blows to the head. a 20-year-old rapper who goes by the name of psycho sam is charged with one of those murders. he bragged about the thrill of killing in his songs. authorities expect to charge him with the other three murders as well. authorities say a college student wanted in the death of a massachusetts woman has now been found dead at a virginia hotel. 22-year-old alex scoran originally from pasadena, maryland, died last night from a self-inflicted gun shot. she was found straggled earlier in the day in clinton, massachusetts. police say he had been ordered to stay away from that woman

back in march. police now have a sketch of an armed carjacker still on the run. take a close look. investigators say a man who looks something like this forced a woman into her car and drove off. it happened last thursday night outside a shopping center. police chased him into prince georges county. he crashed the car, then got away on foot. his victim survived the ordeal. >> and a tragic reminder of how dangerous ocean rip tides can be. a 52-year-old montgomery county man drowned in ocean city yesterday trying to rescue his son. richard wagner was pronounced dead at atlantic general hospital. life guards were able to save his 16-year-old son. maryland is prepared to finally award the state's first slot machine gambling license. it's expected to be awarded tomorrow. that's just outside of ocean city. the washington post reports the track is seeking to install and operate 800 slot machines. if granted, it would still require the approval of the

state lottery commission. the slot parlor could open by next week. the remaining reconstruction on the beach board walk will start a month later than expected. the town commissioner now says that work will start the first week of october because the contract required extra scrutiny. the southern sections demolition will be finished by the end of the year. work on the northern section starts in november and will be done by memorial day weekend. the driver of a minivan died. the single car crash happened shortly after 3:00 a.m. in the 34200 block of enterprise road. it looks like the minivan ran off the road before bursting into flames. a tractor trailer hauling more than 80 cows crashed near the rhoneoak. authorities say the rig tipped over going around a curb and skidded down an embankment. the driver of the truck was not hurt. however, we don't know how many animals were injured or killed in the crash. the road was closed for much of

the day. still ahead, thousands of commuters keep their cars parked in the driveway today. a marathon day for president obama, including a speech here at the u.n. i'm drew elevenson at the united nations. that story coming up. virginians are asking lots of questions about bob mcdonnell's "thesis." how old was he when he wrote it? mcdonnell was 34, married and attending pat robertson's law school. and what did the thesis say about women?

jobs or staying in school longer. and nearly one in three americans has never been married. that's the highest amount in a decade. the economic pinch is driving folks to car pool or turn to public transit. there were a thousand fewer drivers on the road. this is the third year for dc to be part of this. only the second year for the entire metro area. nearly 5500 people pledged to leave their cars at home. a new census report shows commuters in our region spend 33 minutes a day on average getting to work. that's 143 hours a year. people living in arlington have the shortest average commute, just 27 minutes. while prince william county tops the region at 38 minutes. more than 100,000 spent 90 minutes or more driving to work each day. 11% of us do car pool and 13%

use public transit. more than double the national average. several dc area based businesses made working mother magazine's annual 100 best companies. the list honors companies that are committed to family friendly policies that allow moms to succeed at home and at work. this year's winners include arnold and porter, covington, allen hamilton and freddie mac. discovery communications in silver spring and marriott international in bethesda. president obama took a break on his battle for healthcare reform. drew levinson has details. >> reporter: president obama is urging leaders. >> it is time to move forward. >> he brought together isreali prime minister and palestinian president for the first time

legislation passed the senate that would limit greenhouse gas emissions here in the united states. drew levinson, cbs news, united nations. some added pressure on rich nations to commit to greenhouse gas cuts and to pay for poorer nations to burn less coal and preserve their forests. to san diego now where a giant panda of small stature is getting a lot of attention. it's a six week checkup for this little guy. so cute. the unnamed male cub weighed in at 5.1 pounds today and he put on a pound since last week. san diego is one of four zoos in the u.s. with giant pandas. the others are atlanta, memphis, and the national zoo right here in washington. >> very little and cute now, but not for long. >> he didn't like trying to pull the mouth open. >> like any kid. >> very cute. we had a lot of clouds today, not in terms of showers. best shot day, i thought this was a very nice sunset.

the fbi and homeland security are out with a new report tonight. step up security at sports arenas, but an fbi spokesperson says there is no threat. hailing a taxi today, not so easy. several dc cabbies are protesting regulations that cost them money. among the gripe, lower taxi rates. and days of torrential rain left most of metro atlanta under water. eight people have died. some major highways are flooded, so are many homes and businesses and the six flags amusement park is more like a water park. two flu vaccines, four shots. that's what many parents are having to consider for their young children to battle not only seasonal flu, but h1n1. healthcare provieders are urging families to start protecting their kids now. >> hi there. >> parents are starting to get

styte senate passed a bill that would allow the governor to appoint an interim replacement and that could happen by the end of this week. the appointee would serve until after a special election in january. burris did a tearful good- bye to his family today as he was led off to jail. the former new york giant was sentenced to two years behind bars. the 32-year-old shot himself in the leg at a manhattan nightclub. he hopes to play football again after his release. from star to star witness, actor john trevolta may take the stand in a bahamas courtroom. prosecutors say the men demanded $25 million from him and threatened to go public with a document related to his son. that son, 16-year-old jet died in january after suffering a seizure at the family's vacation home in the bahamas. for years, south beach and miami has been known for night
