welcome to 9 news now at noon. president obama maybe trying to rebuild relationships in his first appearance before the u.n. general assembly but that is not stopping him from tough talk. we get more from alison harmelin in new york. president obama bluntly challenged world leaders to step up and pitch in to tackle a laundry list of problems. >> those who used to chastise america for acting alone in the world cannot now stand by and wait for america to solve the world's problems alone. >> reporter: in his first speech to the general assembly president obama looked to build the strained relationship with the u.n. but didn't minutes words about the challenges ahead. >> extremists showing pockets of terror in the world. conflicts that grind on and on. genocide, maestrosty. more nations with nuclear weapons, melting ice caps and ravaged populations, persistent poverty and pandemic disease. >> reporter: the president is using his visit to the united

states as an opportunity opportunity to meet one on one with several world leaders. he met with japan's prime minister this morning and is scheduled to sit down with russia's president this afternoon. but the president's staff went to great pains to make sure he did not run in to libyan president moammar da gadhafi. the president is calls on the u.n. to enforce tougher sanctions against iran for  continuing the nuclear weapons program. cbs news, united nations. the government says its terrorism warning has been extended beyond transit systems and now includes hotels, stadiums and entertainment complexes. the alert follows the arrest of a colorado man with alleged ties to al-qaeda. wit johnson has the latest. >> reporter: security remains tight through new york city today as investigators search for more suspects in a possible

terror plot. in an exclusive interview with 60 minutes, attorney generalled called the threat significant. >> it is not totally clear what it is they had in mind, though i think it is clear that something very serious and organized was underway. >> reporter: police began to beef up surveillance at high- profile locations on tuesday after security bulletins were issued for mass transit systems, hotels, stadiums. sports fans in miami didn't seem to mind added security. >> nice to see the extra troopers and folks out. >> makes me feel safer. even if it takes an extra second to get through. >> reporter: since 9/11 the government has issued similar bulletins but this series of warnings marks the most intense flurry of advisories since president obama took office. the alert follows three terrorist arrest this weekend. one of them is najibullah zazi and he is believed to be to be the prime suspect chef charged with lying to federal agents but they believe he may have

been planning with others to detonate backpack bombs on new york city trains. >> the investigation is going forward and going in different directions. there's a lot more work to be done. >> reporter: there are new questions of whether new york city police may have inadvertently blown the fbi's investigation. the nypd apparently discussed the case with ahmad wais afzali , a police informant without telling the fbi. he reportedly tipped off najibullah zazi about the probe. >> new york police department and fbi officials deny making any missteps in the investigation. they say they are working closely and successfully in this case and many others. a bethesda teenager pled guilty to owning bomb-making chemicals just a short while ago. investigators say a surgery of colin mckenzie gude's bedroom last year turned up assault weapons and ammunition and bomb-

making material but defense attorneys say that he never intended to hurt anyone. a judge could sentence the teen to ten years in prison. virginia state police have released video of what they say is an alleged car jacker running away from a crash scene. you may recall the story of a woman who was car jacked from a shopping center in gainesville, virginia and then forced to ride with the suspect on september 17th. he then led police on a chase before crashing in prince georges county, maryland. this is new released video from virginia state police. and they say the man, seen here, running away from the crash scene, is the same carjacking suspect who led them on a chase in to maryland. police also released a sketch of what the suspect looks like. he is believed to be armed and dangerous, but if you have any information that may lead to an arrest in this case, please call virginia state police. police took a driver and two passengers in to custody

after a wild scene on new york avenue northeast. the suspect's car flipped over on to its roof. dc police say the driver apparently tried to run over an officer who was helping another motorist. that officer opened fire. the driver sped off but lost control and crashed striking some other cars along the way. it appears that no one was seriously injured. well, maryland slot machine commission will meet today and they could award the first slot parlor license the state to the ocean downs racetrack on the eastern shore. organizers at the site submitted a proposal for 800 slot machines and voters approved an amendment allowing up to 2500 machines there. the state has not received as many bids for machines as it hoped. if a final decision is not made today, it should happen at the next commission meeting, which will be held on october 7th. well, today, massachusetts

lawmakers are expected to give final approval to a new state succession law. that would allow the governor to appoint an interim replacement for the late senator ted kennedy. kennedy sent a letter to lawmakers last month, the week before he died from brain cancer, asking for the change. now someone would be able to hold the seat until a special election is held in january. the longest-serving senator in history is in a local hospital. a spokesperson for 91-year-old robert byrd said he fell yesterday at his home in mclean, virginia. blood tests show the west virginia democrat might be developing an infection. he was hospitalized with dangerous infections earlier this year but he returned to the senate before the august recess. we wish him well. howard county leaders are considering a proposal that will ban anyone under the age of 18 from using a tanning bed. the move comes as more studies show that using a tanning bed

before the age of 35 can increase a person's risk of developing skin cancer by as much as 75%. under current county law, anyone under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. >> making the proposal now because of the now overwhelming evidence that indoor tanning beds are a major cause of skin cancer. >> reporter: the county board of health has held a public hearing on the ban last night. if it is approved the ban could be in place within five weeks. well, network television turns its attention to a particularly washington kind -- kind of story. the new cbs drama "the good wife "debuted last night at 10:00 p.m. it examines the choices of a woman who finds her politician husband is cheating. with the stakes so high, why

john today the "washington post" is hosting a huge career fair in two locations until phi p.m. in two locations. one is held at the hyatt regency crystal city hotel in arlington. and that one is for engineering technology or security jobs. now, if you are interested in health care, you should show up at the "washington post" headquarters in downtown washington, d.c. and of course bring plenty of copies of your resume. northern virginia received a three year reprieve to move 20,000 military jobs. most were supposed to be moved from arlington to ft. belvoir by 2011. but ft. belvoir is not served by metro and the additional vehicles along i-95 and route 1 were expected to create a traffic nightmare. the extense also gives property owners in alexandria and crystal city more time find new

tenants. police are investigating a deadly pedestrian accident that occurred in arlington, virginia. officers kept part of eastbound route 50 action just past meade street closed after the accident. police confirmed that a car struck and killed a pedestrian on foot. they have released very few details and they have not exactly called the accident a hit and run. hopefully it will be much easier to get a cab today in the district because a group of taxi drivers went on strike yesterday picketing right in front of mayor fenty's offices. they say new policies have caused them to lose money, claiming that the mayor set rates lower than any place else in the country. the one-day strike ended at 6:00 p.m. coming up next, kim and our forecast. >> i'm watering the weather terrace garden to ensure all

mandatory evacuations are underway for a fast-moving wildfire in ventura county, california. flames have already scorched 6,000-acres and the fire is expected to grow even bigger. at this point, there's no word on when crews expect to have this blaze contained. >> you know, j.c., an amazing thing, i was just talking to a noaa scientist yesterday. they launched the latest ghost satellite and one of the benefits from this new satellite is they can look straight down in to the forest fires and help in figuring out where they are going and what they look like. again, a weather at light having another application which is really great. if you are interested in seeing the interview head over to my blog at wusa9.com. okay. this wednesday is not too bad. there's some clouds outside but i was just on the weather terrace giving the plants a nice watering and there's some

peeks of sun here and there. talk about the weather together. the rain showers across southeastern virginia. basically a spotty shower today is the most we will see. most of the day will be rain- free. pair of sevens at reagan national airport and southerly winds at 12 miles an hour. great to see you. i'm meteorologist kim martucci. keeping a weather eye to the sky for you. take the lunch outside and you should be rain-free. it is warm and humid. up to the north, frederick is in the middle 80s. in the middle 70s at quantico over to the east by annapolis, too. looking to the west along i 81, martinsburg, winchester 82, 85. hagerstown 81. in the district, we are heading to the middle 80s as well. you will see variably cloudy conditions. most of the time it will be cloudy and even a stray shower possible but not likely. we do it again tomorrow. and then on friday, that's when the cooler weather gets here by

the tune of 75 degrees. now, here's all the rain that's been pestering the southeast. we have been watching the weather headlines out of atlanta. they are getting a respite but this area from i would say the tennessee river valley, chattanooga to huntsville in to new orleans and southeast texas, this area could get another one to three inches of rain today. we have a tropical connection down here. our winds in the upper levels of the atmosphere have shifted off the gulf of mexico. that's pushing all of the rain up this side of the 57lations. a warmer humid air mass and it is on top of us. so we can feel the humidity. we don't have any triggers in the atmosphere to dump the rain on us. that's a good thing. we are getting by with a humid sky but not necessarily the torrential rain. good job today pinpointing the rain across the eastern side of virginia. that's the target, taking it in to delmarva, later today northern neck. as we show you the forecast,

important information. in the october issue, there's an article about the one-two punch for the flu season. so let's talk about that. let's talk about that swine flu because everybody wants to know who should get it, where can we get it? will the vaccine available and who's at risk. >> absolutely. the swine flu is all the rage because it's the new flu that is out there and it is quite veer lent and affecting younger people rather than older people so it is ironic. in a recent poll, people over 65 are the most to want to get the vaccine but they are the last in line to get it. >> afind that amazing but they say that young children and young adults are most at risk. >> quite true. it seems to affect them more and older people seem to have immunity to it perhaps from a flu that circulated many, many years ago. >> talk about the regular flu vaccine because that's available now and of course seniors can get that. >> absolutely. the regular flu really does
