point in investigators worried president obama might have been the intended target. a bethesda teen pleaded guilty in federal court today. bruce leshan reports his lawyers insist the whole thing has been blown way out of proportion. >> reporter: three assault rifles, two shotguns, bomb making materials and chemicals and triggers and how to r round they found it in the bedroom of the 19-year-old. the teenager's parents offered no explanation after he pleaded guilty to one felony count of possessing a destructive device but his lawyer says he never plotted to hurt anyone. >> there is no presidential motorcade map. there is no highlighted list of saint john's teachers. >> reporter: another teenager who lived here in a rural part of gaithersburg has already pleaded guilty to manufacturing

pipe bombs. colin mackenzie gougie's lawyer says his client was holding the bomb making materials for his friend's father who lived here and was in the middle of a nasty divorce. >> there was no plot to kill anybody at any time. >> reporter: the story only gets more strange. the lawyer says the friend's father actually stars in this youtube video that purports to show a russian special forces unit. he says the father wanted to teach his kids about the explosives he used before fleeing russia. >> he is of the mind set that his children should learn how to be men. >> reporter: but prosecutors continue their focus on mackenzie, a former member of the saint john's rifle team. the u.s. attorney says there is no way to know what he had done if police hadn't found his arsenal. >> the teenager has already been in jail for 15 months slated for sentencing in january and he is looking at

between two and seven years behind bars. anita and lesli. >> bruce leshan, thank you. very strange. a recent graduate of walter johnson high school in bethesda is accused of selling drugs to current students. charged with possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. he would deal to kids during the lunch hour period. virginia state police released video today of an alleged carjacker running away from a crash scene. last thursday night a woman was carjacked from a shopping center in gainesville then forced to ride around with the suspect. he then led police on a chase before crashing in prince george's county in maryland. now take a look at some newly released video. they say this man seen here is running away from the car scene or the crash scene and is the same carjacking suspect who led them on a chase into maryland. >> rarely they release any video but we feel this is a

unique character and mannerism that may help in identifying the suspect. >> here is a look at that composite sketch of the suspect. he is considered armed and dangerous. if you have any information that might lead to his arrest you're asked to call virginia state police. police are investigating a deadly accident that happened in arlington. a car struck and killed a man who was trying to cross eastbound 50. the road was closed for hours for the investigation. the driver of the car stayed on the scene and no charges have been filed. fairfax county police announce two cold case arrests in the murder of the 22-year- old found stabbed to death inside her car in reston back in 2008. 21-year-old michael thomas and 28-year-old marcus williams are now charged with her murder. one was arrested after meeting with fairfax detectives. williams was taken into custody by u.s. marshals outside of detroit.

leave your valuables at home before you run or bike along the cno canal. montgomery police say somebody is targeting cars in the potomac area along the canal. lindsey mastis joins us live with this. >> reporter: the burglaries have been going on since march and they have been helping at this parking lot on mcarthur boulevard. police say the suspect smashes a window, grabs a wallet or purse and uses the stolen credit cards before the victims ever return from the trail. he breaks into one car at a time. a car where he can see a purse, a wallet has been left inside. montgomery county police say he will grab valuables and only targets one car a day and does so eratically. >> this suspect has broken into vehicles perhaps for three

weekends running. then there will be no break-ins for two or three weekends. then he will attack again. >> reporter: police are hoping someone will recognize this man. the photo came from surveillance cameras. it is where police say he allegedly used stolen cards. people who venture along the cno canal are urged to hide valuables especially because the suspect has so far only broken into cars with valuables in plain sight. this biker even hides his removal bike rack in his trunk and when this couple parks here they leave their gps unit at home. dorethy mcgee has her own special way to hide valuables. >> i roll it up and put it under the seat so it is not at all visible. >> reporter: there are two lots here. montgomery police as well as the u.s. park service they patrol these lots. i talked with the u.s. park

stocks lost ground today on wall street. dow finishing the day down 81 points to close at 9748. nasdaq fell 14 points. s&p 500 lost 10 points. a coming out party for the hope diamond. the gem went on display for the first time today without its ornate setting. the world's largest blue diamond will be on view by itself for several months at the smithsonian institute while a new setting is prepared. legend claims the diamond is cursed but officials say it has brought nothing but luck since it has been here in washington. president obama set out to chart a new course at the united nations. telling world leaders america has no interest in going it alone. as reported president obama called on all countries to work together to tackle the globe's most pressing problem. >> reporter: president obama carried the weight of the world's expectations.

nation." much of the area still under some stagnant water. look at those pictures. a state of emergency has been declared in georgia. the white house promises federal help is on the way. evacuations are underway after a fast moving fire continues to sweep through parts of southern california. nearly 6000 acres have burned in ventura county. fire investigators don't have an official cause yet for this but there are indications it was sparked by spontaneous combustion of manure. australia's largest city cleaning up after a red dust storm. it caused all kinds of problems in sydney. international flights were disrupted and a spike in emergency calls for people that had trouble breathing.

the new park opened there today. the space on westlake is divided for two areas. the pets can exercise, socialize with other animals and enjoy plenty of off the leash time. the dog park is the fourth official dog park. people are looking for a person who wrapped duct tape around a cat. it was wrapped so tightly it couldn't walk. it had to be sedated for the duct tape to be removed from the body. a man suspected of killing a parent is in a chicago jail cell tonight. he surrendered after a seven- hour stand off. he holed up in an exam room. police believe that man got into a fight with his parents over some money before they were shot to death. caught on tape.

sheriff deputies playing a nintendo wii game during the search of a convicted drug dealer's house. this video recorded by security camera was obtained by a t.v. station in tampa and it shows these police officers playing a wii bowling game while they were supposed to be conducting a drug search. the polk county sheriff calls the video embarrassing and promises disciplinary action. a boy got his head stuck between two concrete pillars. they had to use an electric saw to get him out. it took several hours before the boy was freed. but amazingly he only suffered slight injuries. a tiny device in the wrong hands can make a real mess of your credit. up next, how to protect yourself from skimmers. that's coming up in living smart.

people accused of trying to extort millions from the actor after the death of his son. today he testified about how he tried to save the life of the 16-year-old boy following a seizure. >> reporter: john travolta and wife kelly preston walked into the courthouse without a word through a side door. john travolta was the first witness on the stand. in a soft voice he began describing the day his son jett died. the first time he has talked with it publicly. the 16-year-old boy had a seizure and collapsed in the bathroom of the family vacation villa in the bahamas january 2nd. he was pronounced dead at a hospital a short time later. john travolta told the jury his son was autistic and had seizures every five to ten days. he said he performs mouth to mouth and his son's caretaker pumps his chest. he was on the stands for less than 5 minutes when his testimony was put on hold

because of defense objections. objections that took the rest of the morning to resolve. an ambulance driver and a local politician are on trial for extortion. prosecutors say the two threatened to go public with a medical document showing john travolta wanted to deny care for his son unless john travolta paid them $25 million. both say they are innocent. john travolta was back on the stand in the afternoon but only talked about the day his son died. he will have to return at some point to testify about the alleged extortion. but the judge didn't say when. cbs news, bahamas. >> john travolta has kept a low profile since his son's death. he skipped promotional film so he could have time to grieve for his son. cbs has reason to celebrate. last night's prime time lineup delivered the network's best tuesday rating premier in at

newborns from the h1n1 virus more hospitals are limiting who can visit mom and baby and that can include other kids. a new hampshire hospital has banned all children as well as adults who are not immediate family members from the maternity ward. pregnant women are also at higher risk for h1n1 complications. so many obgyn offices are asking people who feel sick to stay away. also in living well. lose 1 to 2 pounds a day. that is the claim of this diet. hcg is a hormone produced during pregnancy. the diet has made a comeback. but is it too good to be true? >> reporter: working hard for those hard bodies takes discipline, determination and the proper diet. but some people are turning to some extra help these days in what's called the hcg diet.
