this is 9news now. >> thank for joining us tonight. i'm anita brikman. >> and i'm derek mcginty. >> right away a resident thought he was the wrong guy in the wrong place. but tonight he is also a man critically wounded after police shot him multiple times in a driveway this afternoon. what he was doing in that remote neighborhood in the first place is just one of the questions police are still trying to answer tonight. surea chinn live with the latest on what they figured out so far. >> reporter: well, we did some digging and we've learned that the suspect has a history of criminal record ranging from auto theft, burglary and drug charges. now, police tonight are trying

to figure out exactly what happened including why that suspect was in that part of town in the first place and why that suspect allegedly a thakd that police officer -- attacked that police officer in this quiet neighborhood. >> they were like bam, bam bam, bam bam. >> reporter: jay wheeler was settling in at a nice evening when gunshots erupted. it turns out wheeler was right. police say a resident of this home became concerned when a driver of this dark-colored cadillac snaked his way up this long driveway. >> this is an area where you either live here or you know someone who lives here to be here. >> reporter: the resident called police after a few words were exchanged with the driver. police say 31-year-old ingam andre attempted to turn around when he got stuck in the muddy grass. when the officer arrived and approached the driver, police say the driver who did not have a weapon got out of his car, charged at and attacked the

officer. that's when the officer opened fire multiple times. >> i lived here 15 times and never saw this before. >> reporter: he did not live in the neighborhood and residents along with detectives are trying to figure out why he came here in the first place. >> upsetting. scared. middle of the day having 30 cop cars come barreling down your street. >> reporter: and as a routine, for any officer involved in a shooting, the officer has been placed on administrative leave with pay. he's been on the force for two years. that's the very latest. reporting live, su 9news now and wusa9.com. lance corporal was killed in iran during his second tour of duty. brittany morehouse talked to family members. >> he told us he never regained consciousness and he passed away on the operating table. >> reporter: it's the knock on the door military parents dread.

>> i don't think there is words. >> reporter: so many words for one young man. >> he was a true, true hero. >> reporter: they say their 24-year-old son followed in his grandfather's foot steps. a vietnam veteran. >> he wanted to be a marine from the time he was eight years old. >> reporter: and by 2008 he was fulfilling his childhood dream serving in iraq. then one year later in afghanistan. >> he knew what he was getting into. and we all backed him up. >> reporter: including his newlywed wife. the two met in church a decade ago. she is one among many loved ones in frederick county who feel lost without him, including two younger sisters and a 5-year-old brother. >> this is jordan. and i wanted him to come for christmas and come over to halloween if he could. and i just wanted him to stay

forever. be my brother. >> it's left a hole. a big hole. and i'm in incredible pain. all of us are. >> we'll never see him here on earth. >> my whole thoughts were bring him home. just bring him home. it's too late for my baby but bring the others home. >> that was brittany morehouse reporting from frederick. now we move on to a cbs news exclusive. the trojan bomber al qaeda has developed a new tactic that allows suicide bombers to breech even the tightest security. a warning the subject matter ahead is graphic in nature. this suicide bomber was able to kill a saudi prince who was the head of saudi arabia counter terrorism. he was able to get his bomb past two sets of screeners, metal detectors and the saudi secret service. the baller did it by employing a

tactic of the narcotics trade. he put a detonator inside his rectum. and right now there is no security system in place to stop that kind of an attack. >> there's absolutely nothing other than to require people to strip naked at the airport. >> and al qaeda is threatening to share its new technique via the internet and there is nothing to stop them from doing that. today iran wrapped up two days of missile tests by firing off its most powerful rocket and in theory this could carry a nuclear weapon far enough to reach u.s. military bases. they're investigating an online threat against the president. a poll posted on facebook asked if the president should be assassinated. a secret service spokesperson says we're aware of it and we'll take the appropriate

investigative steps. however, the agency says it is only investigating the person who posted that poll on facebook. not the respondents who answered yet. federal investigators have come up with the names of three more people who might have been a part of an alleged terror plot targeting mass transit in new york city. that original suspect najibullah zazi is due in court tomorrow. he faces arraignment on charges he conspired to use weapons of mass destructive. he denies it. carbon dioxide sick enz some people at an office. some were vomiting or having a tough time breathing. ten of the 41 who were examined were taken to hospitals for more treatment. investigators say the fumes apparently seeped into the building from a generator after a power failure. another health concern. this one more widespread. the environmental protection agency warns that hundreds of school buildings all across the country could have caulking that contains potentially cancer causing pcbs. the agency recommends tests to

be conducted on the caulking that is peeling or cracking in school buildings built or renovated between 1950 and 1978. as it stands in dc, you can't smoke inside your office, favorite restaurant or neighborhood bar and soon you might not be able to smoke right outside either. check out this bill introduced by dc council member. it would let property owners ban smoking up to 25 feet from their outer walls. yep. that would include public sidewalks. we'll let you know if the bill gets any traction at city hall. and speaking of outdoors, maybe it's not smoke that's the problem. maybe it's more clouds rolling in. top. >> that and some cooler temperatures. i have a jacket on and i think you're going to need one tonight and tomorrow morning. it's pretty nice out. temperatures will be cooler. breezy too. upper 40s in the suburbs. winds south, southwesterly at 10-15. temperatures are cooler after a

high of 80 today. 64 in leesburg and mainly in the 60s to the north and west. but already 52 in manassas. and 55 in culpeper. we'll come back and talk about the coolest air of the season. how long it's going to be around. and we'll look ahead to the rest of the week and weekend coming up. >> thanks, topper. cooler temperatures aren't the only sign of the change in the seasons. it's also the time of year when people begin lining up for the flu shot. and this year indications are they're lining up earlier and in greater numbers. gary nurenberg joins us with that. >> reporter: reporters are always looking for the perfect quote to sum up their stories and tonight we did. one woman told us we have had lines out the wazoo. >> go ahead and pull up your sleeve for me on the left side. >> reporter: although it won't release specific numbers, the spokesman for cvs tells increase of people getting flu shots this year over last is huge. >> put your arm at your side. >> reporter: this cvs was

giving shots until 10:00 at night. how the man who listens to his wife. >> she was harassing me about getting the boys up here to get their flu shots as well as myself. it's really for them. it's very important. because they were both three months premature. and it's very important for them to keep up their immune and to fight the must bugs. and they've had it -- flu bugs. and they've had it ever since they were born. >> reporter: demand is so great this year, the clinic will soon offer a drive-thru in the parking lot. drive up, get a shot in your car and drive off. >> a lot of people are more concerned. people are coming in earlier asking for flu vaccination. and there is overall a concern among the general population. >> ready? >> yes. >> reporter: rashied recommends that his his patients get the regular flu vaccine and then the h1n1 vaccine when it becomes

available. the regular flu vaccine and h1n1 are separate and distinct shots that provide separate and distinct protection that means the little twins have yet another visit to the clinic in their future. anita. >> but they were so brave. all right. gary nurenberg, thank you. fairfax county is taking extra steps to get the word out to people about what to expect this season. they hosted a town hall meeting tonight and they have three more of them scheduled if you want to go. the flu town halls all begin at 7:00 p.m. the next one is tomorrow in alexandria at the governmental center. there is another thursday at the fairfax county health department. then next week another meeting will be held on october 15th at the south county center in alexandria. well, that certainly hit hard at the campus of the naval academy in annapolis. tonight no less than 33 mid shift man are under doctor's care after showing symptoms of the flu. in day's past that has been as close as 75. just ahead, a dangerous mix.

and welcome back. here is your forecast first. the next three days right out of the gate windy tomorrow. maybe 70. some clouds will come in tomorrow night. we've kind of fine tuned the forecast a little bit and then another shot of cool air comes in. upper 60s. a lot of sunshine and partly cloudy on thursday with highs again in the upper 60s. temperatures right now 65 downtown. 54 in baltimore. 52 in manassas and 52 in quantico. so it's a little bit on the cool side. elsewhere per seeville 62. -- percyville 62. 53 in bethesda. 52 in silver springs and right around 50 for upper bowie. tomorrow night and wednesday night will be colder.

now, for tomorrow morning, tuesday morning, mostly sunny and cool. winds west to southwest at 10-20. by afternoon, partly cloudy, windy and cooler. highs near p 0. now, the winds -- 70. now, the winds from the west actually they do us a favor. they downslope. they come down the mountains, our little mountains and they get compressed. that's why we think we're going to make 70s. if the winds were more northwest, we would have held in the 60s tomorrow. zone forecast all six zones are still on our website at wusa9.com. sunshine across the board. 68 in front royal. 69 in middleburg. i think manassas will make 70 and dale city 71. low 70s down in charles county and around 70 for the bay. and as you might expect with the winds, there is a small craft advisory posted for the bay and much of the potomac for tomorrow

the interest owed. in our living well report tonight, new researchers say parents and doctors need to be more vinl lent when it comes -- vigilant when it comes time to giving medicine to kids. 600,000 children are treated each year for bad drug reactions, including accident tall drug overdoses, medicine -- accidental drug overdoses, medicine mix up. >> children less than five years old were more vulnerable to the reactions. >> in the younger kids antibiotic like penicillin caused most of the problem. in teens most bad reactions came from stimulants, antidepressants and hormones like birth control pills. now, doctors say be on the lookout for rashes, gnaw shah, vomiting -- nausea, vomiting or belly pain. the doctor is in. you won't want to miss dr. oz
