extra steps to get the word out to people on what to expect at the flu season. the health department hosts the town hall meeting last night and three more are scheduled. the flu town halls begin at 7 p.m. the next one will be at franconia government center and another thursday at the fairfax county health department and next week another meeting will be held october 15th at the south county center in alexandria. a marine from frederick, maryland will be laid to rest this weekend. lance corporal jordan -- chrobot was killed. he was following in he footsteps of his grandfather, a vietnam veteran. last year he served in iraq. he leaves behind two little sister and a 5-year-old brother. >> i wanted him to come for

investigating the mauling death of a toddler by her own family dog. it appears the 23-month-old girl wandered in to the backyard to pet the pit bull that was chained up. the dog had been there ten years and never caused trouble before. the death toll in the philippines has risen dramatically to 240 people. dozens more are unaccounted for. a tropical storm dumped more than a month's worth of rain in 12 hours last saturday. much lighter news, the sports fan in chief is personally leading the charge to bring the olympics back to the united states. president obama plans to join the first lady and other chicago celebrities on a trip to denmark this week. there he will lobby members of the international olympic committee to award the summer games to the windy city. the secret service is investigating an on-line poll that discusses an assassination of president obama. that story is coming up in

a fast-moving storm is left behind some big cleanup projects this morning in southern virginia. authorities are urging people around the town of south boston to stay indoors while emergency crews try to clear away downed trees and power lines. thousands of people are still without power, but no serious injuries are reported. >> a lot of times you get the winds aloft. but when you get the thunderstorms or the strong showers they can take the winds upstair and bring them down to the ground. >> yesterday was weird. one minute it was light and the next minute it was very dark and then light again sun shining and rain and whatever. >> it was exciting. >> wow. >> i didn't know what to do. >> it is fall now and we are getting in to it and the temperatures of then cold side. the rest of the week is jacket weather for sure in the

smoking from 25 feet from their outer walls even if that includes the public sidewalk. we will let you know the progress of this legislation if it gets any farther. i got my flu shot on the air last week and now martin o'malley is following my lead and has gotten one, as well. he bared his arm yesterday. he is encouraging others to get their first-ever flu shots. he says it will help health officials have a better handle on any outbreaks the flu. >> getting your seasonal flu shot will not protect you against the swine flu, but it will help protect our public health infrastructure, our hospitals, our doctors ' waiting rooms and the like. >> reporter: eight people in maryland have died from the h1n1 flu this year including an 8th grader last week. the first doses of h1n1 vaccine

should be arriving late this week or early next week. say good morning to kristin fisher in the web center. good morning. >> you know, there's a few things that would make the secret service team up with the social networking site. when someone posts an on-line poll on a site asking should president obama be killed, that's the exemption. take a look at this. this is what happened. on saturday someone posted this poll right here on facebook. the title, vote in the obama poll. and it asks a question, should obama be killed and any facebook member could answer yes, maybe, if he cuts my health care or no. one day later, on sunday, the blog, the political carnival came across the facebook poll and wrote a scathing blog post about it. as you may imagine in this day and age it didn't take long for word to spread on the web. facebook immediately removed the poll and the third party application that supported it.

it is important to note this was a third party application, not just a poll that comes from facebook but the damage had been done. 700 people had already responded to the poll by the time it was taken down. so what does it mean? it means the secret service is of course getting involved. facebook is working with the secret service to find the person who posted it and evaluate the seriousness of the threat. but make no mistake about it, anytime the secret service launches a full-fledged investigation they are taking this very seriously. bottom line, you just don't make comments about killing the president. you just don't. there's no execution for it. >> none whatsoever expwhrrchlts. the redskins biggest rival is featured on monday night football and as the wizards open training camp today, arenas says he is arriving with a whole new attitude. tonight at 11:00, taking years off of your face without undergoing the knife.

accused of plotting an attack on new york city is due if federal court. the 24-year-old is expected to plead not guilty. he is charged with conspiracy to use weapons of mass destruction. prosecutors claim that najibullah zazi was planning to detonate bombs on new york city's transit system on the anniversary of the september 11th attack. >> this case looks more serious than so many that we have seen come before us. it is because of the weapons of mass destruction charge, because of his affiliation with al-qaeda. >> reporter: investigators also believe that najibullah zazi had help and other suspects were stockpiling materials needed to make bombs. they are now searching for his possible acome polices. cbs news is reporting on a new tactic which allows suicide bomb evers to breach the tightest security. dubbed the trojan bomber, a terrorist smuggled a bomb past a saudi arabian palace and

these students have a better idea than most about extending time in school. they are on a modified year round calendar. they have a five week summer camp but most choose to attend a five week camp. they have bounced back from being one of the worst in the country. >> we have raised scores to 10% in the state. >> reporter: the principal says getting more time with teachers helps children from challenging backgrounds compete with more privileged kids and she says the extra cost is worth it if you consider the cost of young people who drop out of school. what's the best symbol of our country? it's not microsoft, or major league baseball. it is wal-mart. according to a poll by 60 minutes and vanity fair, nearly 50% of americans say the retail giant is our best symbol. here's some more interesting findings from that poll.

well, you know, we have been accepting back to school pictures and i have one to share with you right now. our loyal viewer sent this in. he's a proud dad of holly melissa kessler. this is her on the first day of preschool. her mom is a teacher there as well and every day the mother/daughter duo heads to pine crest in annandale but not before watching 9 news now. good morning. the state department caused a minor international incident yesterday when it posted pictures on flickr of president obama and the prime minister of spain. one anything bad about the pictures. they were taken at the white house except for the fact that also posing in the picture were the spanish prime minister's two daughters who had never had photos of them published or leaked on-line. oops. now, i want you to know. i'm sure you want to see the pictures. so here it is. right here you will notice

president obama, first lady michelle obama and there's the prime minister of spain his wife and his two daughters that are causing of this controversy. 16-year-old laura and 13-year- old alba. these pictures were taken last week when the obama hosted a reception for foreign dignitaries. the president posed for over 100 photographs with their guests throughout the night, all of which were later posted to the state department's flickr page which you can see right here. they have since taken down the photos in question but that's how they originally got out and boy did they get out. this is what the papers if spain looked like yesterday. it was all over the front page. this is a big deal in spain. this is the first time any pictures of the prime minister's daughters have been made public. spanish law prohibits the media from doing so citing security concerns. the state department removed
