i'm andrea roane. thanks for joining us. today is tuesday, september 29th. while we're waiting for the announce on who will endorse democratic gubernatorial candidate creigh deeds let get up to date on the forecast. here's howard bernstein. >> a cooler morning than we have had. some spots in the 40s. a couple of cool days to go through this week. showers to the north and west. big storm system in canada bringing us brisk northwesterly winds and cooler weather. see clouds getting in the shenandoah valley. some of it will rotate through it. the bright sunshine will fade somewhat today. a mix of sun and clouds this afternoon. a much-cooler day and temperatures around the 70- degree mark. noontime mid-60s. drive time temperature in the mucher 80s. code green air quality and i posted how the air quality had been good. you can read about that at wusa9.com. now we need a traffic update. for more here's angie.

>> thank you, howard. we have a string of incidents to tell you about. 50 eastbound at courthouse road is where we have an accident blocking the center lane. notice southbound on the gw parkway at the key bridge, more crash activity to tell you about. nearby, here's another one in southeast dc. another accident at minnesota avenue and naylor road. 27 is where we are seeing the biggest delay by far. we are looking at drivers sitting in traffic for at least an hour as they make their way from 109 to the split. this is just volume. no incidents or accidents along the way. to the outer loop. from 9 -- 95 to georgia. a 15 to 20 minute commute. earlier accident cleared out. good news there. moving to another shot. in aspen hill, maryland, we have an accident at the intersection of southbound georgia avenue and connecticut. notice the drivers are just getting by to the left. you are okay once you pass the

scene. finally end with a slow go on 66. a big delay from 50 to 495. also seeing a lot of congestion from route 28 to route 7. over to you. the race to be the next governor of virginia is about to get a little more intense today. democrat creigh deeds is in clarendon , virginia preparing to receive what his campaign calls a major endorsement. this is a live look at the event. 9 news now has a crew at this event and we will have a full report coming up at noon but as soon as the endorsement comes about, we will bring that to you live. here's a look at some other things happening today. alternate's secretary general and president obama are scheduled to meet to discuss afghanistan. rasmussen believes the united states has to put a stronger

focus on preparing afghan forces to take the lead in securing their nation. but he also believes it is too early to decide whether the country needs more u.s. combat troops. terror suspect najibullah zazi will be in court in brooklyn today. he will face charges he conspired to use weapons of mass destruction. prosecutors say najibullah zazi was poised to unleash a terror attack on new york city commuter trains on the anniversary of the september 11th terrorist attack. najibullah zazi is expected to enter a plea of not guilty. today u.s. diplomates could find themselves accusing israel of war crimes against the palestinian people. for the first time ever the united states is a member of the united nations human rights council. the group will meet to discuss allegations that israel committed crimes against humanity when it bombed parts of gaza killing more than 1,000 palestinian civilians. hamas is also alleged to have committed war crimes by firing rockets at israeli civilians.

now the meeting comes as diplomates are due in washington for talks meant to lay the ground work for renewed palestinian peace negotiations. israeli representatives are scheduled to meet today with a special middle east enjoy george mitchell. palestinian officials will hold separate talks with mitchell later this week. metro's eyes will be watching as you take your metro trip each morning. they are preparing to install video cameras on the buses and trains. metro officials hope the cameras will help to manage crowds and investigate criminal activity. they say this is the first step toward a system-wide surveillance network. no office, no restaurant and soon not even outside. dc council member has introduced a bill that will allow property owners to ban smoking up to 25 feet from their outer walls, that includes public sidewalks. we will keep you updated whether the bill gets any

traction at city hall. the district has fired a contractor it had hired to build a $12 million computer system for school information. according to the "washington post," the city says williams adley and company missed several deadlines. the software was defective and there were allegations of personnel problems. the system is designed to compile information about student academic growth, teacher quality and graduation rates. fairfax county is taking extra steps to get the word out to people about what to expect this new season. the health department hosted a town hall meeting last night and they have three more town hall meetings scheduled. the flu town halls all begin at 7 p.m. the next one will be tonight in alexandria at the franconia governmental center. there's another one on thursday at the fairfax county health department. and next week another meeting will be held on october 15th at the south county center in alexandria. again, we want to bring you

live to the clarendon metro station where democrat state senator creigh deeds has received the endorsement of former virginia governor lynnwood holten. this is creigh deeds accepting that endorsement. >> we have to relieve congestion in northern virginia. that means approving metro and mass transit as well as our road network. that means including restarting the hot lane projects for 95 and 395, improving mobility on 66 corridor, widening, making improvements in the route 28 corridor. upgrading the fairfax county parkway and addressing traffic issues related to the brac process. the last time we passed meaningful transportation funding is when jerry was the governor of the commonwealth. he brought a bipartisan team of democrats, republicans, independents, business leaders, community leaders, legislators to the table. to provide recommendations and

pass a plan. since then every time a governor has presented a transportation proposal -- >> again, we are listening to senator creigh deeds, the democratic gubernatorial candidate for virginia accepting the endorsement of a former republican governor linwood holten. this is at a critical time for creigh deeds who did not receive the endorsement of the former democratic governor wilder and who has taken hits lately in "washington post" article says he doesn't have a real plan for transportation and slamming what some see as negative ads. we will have more on this endorsement on 9 news at noon. we'll be right back. stay with us.

typhoon bears down on the central coast. the storm killed 240 people in the philippines. it is expected to make land fall in vietnam later today. we are feeling the affects of fall approaching. here's howard bernstein. >> that we are. cooler air mass has blown in a front. today breezes, windy at times. we will get close to 70 and maybe low 80s to the south and the winds at times gusting to 30 miles an hour. tomorrow mid-60s. a slight chance of a shower and upper 60s on thursday. we will call it partly sunny, breezy, cooler around 70. west winds ten to 20. sunset 6:54. partly cloudy and chilly tonight. mid-40s in the cooler spots. mid-50s in town. tomorrow a mix and clouds and sun and highs in the mid-60s and again a stray shower. big storm system in southern canada throwing rain across new york state back to pennsylvania and ohio. for us, it is bringing in the

northwesterly winds and there's some cloudiness to the north and west which is rotating in toward us. the bright sunshine will dim at times behind those clouds and the northwesterly flow. see this little trough of low pressure extending from this low? this will rotate through us tomorrow and that's why a slight chance of a shower in the forecast as we head in to wednesday. as far as the rest of the week, the next best chance of rain is not until we get in to the weekend. mainly late friday. look at the computer model. you see the clouds advancing. any showers in the mountains for this afternoon. tonight, partly to mostly cloudy and then on wednesday showers in the mountains and then watch what happens. we get these spotty showers. these speckles of green here and there that may develop during the day with upper air disturbance rotating through. by thursday we should see more sunshine but a chilly start to the day. here's our seven-day forecast. the temperatures certainly cool. fall like and at the end of

what really makes this one so important? >> well, this one focuses on arab cinema and it focuses on cinema that is new and the most innovative out of the arab world and these are films that are -- by far they are not obscure films. they are films that are seen and exposed all over the world, but they just don't have the opportunity to be seen by american audiences. they are films participating in film festivals all over the world and they are winning very prestigious breezes and there isn't a venue for them to be seen here and we have happy to have the opportunity to have them participate. >> you say there isn't a venue to have them widely seen in the united states. is that because of the politics or the political controversial theme of the movies themselves? >> i don't think so. i think people are curious and they want to see film actress different cultures. it is really matter of they

just don't have distribution in the u.s. and therefore there's no reason to bring them here and put them in theaters. >> we call them arabian film festivals and films from a particular region of the world, but there are so many different countries and so many different issues it's not all serious. some are funny. tell us about some of the films, especially the ones that will open at the festival. >> they run the gamut. we have comedies and dramas. we have romances, but we have quite a few comedies this year, which is really nice. it putts nice facet to the festival and it deals with issues that maybe touch on women's issues, cross cultural issues, politics, but a lot of these films that we are presenting do it in a humorous and creative light and very entertaining. >> reporter: who picks the films that appear in the festival. >> in the arabian flights i did

cook book. i will jazz it up with spanish olive oil. rather than any other olive oil. it is my favorite. >> what is different about it. >> it has complexity and deppette of flavor no other olive oyl oil from any other part of the world has as far as i'm concerned and sherry vinegar. >> it smells good. >> yes, it does. we have thyme, margarine and oregano. this is a chili paste from morocco. >> it will give it a kick. >> a little kick and a little cumin, garlic and shallots. >> just a little garlic, i see. >> well, i'm cuban. >> it is all good. >> here you have the basis they are the marinade. here we have a marinade i prepared already. and slathered on a hanger steak already. the hanger comes from -- it is called a hanger or hanging tender. it is very tender but it is
