talk only to our bruce johnson. >> reporter: one is a hall of fame err, the other an all-pro defensive end. since retiring from pro football the two have built solid representizations, founders of a nonprofit that works with at risk young people in the area. >> we could easily have gone back home and made a difference in those communities but this is our community. >> reporter: former redskins players now feel their reputations have been smeared by a series of critical articles in the washington city paper. >> the message that is being presented to the public is that we are up to something. and that we are doing something underhanded and that is absoluteliry not the case. >> reporter: the controversy centers on this building which is located in the 2400 block of martin luther king avenue. dc public charter school. one time it was home to the good samaritan foundation. a private nonprofit that was founded by the two former redskins players. city paper headlines say art mauck and mann never delivered

the program promised to the community and they sold the building for nearly $3 million after buying it from the dc government for just over $250,000. >> we had to take out all the debris -- it just took $25,000 just to gutted the building. >> reporter: another 1.5 million in borrowed money for renovations. and still not enough. they say a bad economy and construction delays left the nonprofit in the red. >> the proceeds from the sale of the building went to paying off all our debt. most of our debt. we are still in debt. >> reporter: despite the newspaper claims they say the youth of the area were never without the good samaritan programs. after school tutoring, computer training and life skills training. >> we had almost 200 kids this past summer in our program. we currently have 70. >> reporter: they say the city paper articles have cost their

program a $450,000 earmark from congress. >> we feel it is a strike on our character. >> reporter: bruce johnson, 9news now and wusa9.com. >> art mauck and mann have now change the name of their nonprofit from the good samaritan foundation to the youth power center. a virginia father and daughter are charged with recruiting gang members. fairfax city police say they targeted students at fairfax high. 43-year-old theodore olds directed one part of the bloods and used his daughter to recruit students from his school. an informant and two fairfax high school students said olds carried a handgun and would threaten to harm them if they did not pay their $80 monthly dues. olds also ordered gang members to rob. >> i had no idea. people get their stuff stolen

all the time. not to go out and do gang stuff. >> i don't believe it. i believe the recruitment could be happening but i don't believe that the kids are falling for it. these are smart kids. they are great kids. >> reporter: theodore olds, his wife and daughter lived in a fairfax city apartment until they recently moved to prince william county. that's where they were arrested on friday. first bankruptcy and now this. philadelphia eagles quarterback michael vick has agreed to repay more than $400,000 he is accused of taking illegally from a pension fund. vick is said to have taken the money to pay for penalties that stem from his dogfighting conviction. he spoke to children yesterday in dc about animal cruelty. a university of maryland medical school researcher is dead. she apparently overdosed on heroin or a heroin substitute. 29-year-old kerry john died sunday after injecting herself with a drug substitute used to treat recovering heroin

addicts. police say her boyfriend, 33- year-old clinton mccrackin, also bought the drugs online from suppliers overseas. if you have a lead foot when you drive through maryland consider this a warning. more speed cameras are going up around the state and those cameras will be trained on high construction zones. our scott broom is joining us live tonight in laurel. >> reporter: the focus of all of this is on worker safety. all of those workers you see as you move through these construction zones. today the widow of one maryland highway worker was among those on hand to roll out the camera systems. big signs will warn motorists that speed cameras are in use as they enter a work zone. there will even be electronic speed displays before the motorist gets to the camera in the speed trap. only then will the camera snap a shot. and then if you are 12 miles per hour over you'll get a notice in the mail with a $40

fine. >> every day we have workers who come to their office. this is their office. you can see how close it is to speeding vehicles, to dangerous situations. >> reporter: now, all of this rolls out tomorrow in mailer at three locations. these are the biggest construction zones in the state. i-95 north to prince george's county at the icc interchange it is under construction. then up around baltimore. i-95 just past baltimore then a work zone on the baltimore beltway 695. this is not just about workers' safety it is also about motorist safety. about a dozen motorists per year in maryland die in accidents that happen in these work zones. the work zones have a much higher accident rate than just about any other type or stretch of highway in the state. reporting live via skyp i'm scott broom, 9news now and webb welcome back. >> scott, got to take it easy out there. time is running out for
