. welcome to 9 news now. another powerful earthquake hit indonesia. in samoa the island nation is dealing with a crisis following a earthquake and tsunami that killed at least 150 people. rescue workers pulled this woman from the water. crews used heavy equipment and bare hands to search for thousands missing after two earthquakes hit indonesia. this morning 6.8 magnitude quake hit 150-miles from wednesday's 7.6. in padang, people ran for their lives when the earthquake struck. hundreds of buildings collapsed. at least 500 are dead but it may be days before the extent of the damage is known. emergency crews set up makeshift shelters to treat the injured and give refuge to tens of thousands who are homeless. >> reporter: the earthquakes are a day after another massive

quake triggered a tsunami in the south pacific. they are looking for more victims where a giant wave washed away entire villages. police tried to con doll this girl as her mother's body was drove away. this. >> she's not sure if any children made it out alive. the task of cleaning up is daunting. the tsunami pushed huge boats out of the ocean and destroyed countless homes. emergency aid is on the way for the people in the samoa islands and indonesia, it can't come fast enough. karen brown, cbs news. last night the senate approved a short-term funding bill to help keep the federal government running. it includes an increase of 6% the congressional budget. this year's budget tops $4.7

billion. and according to politico, that money will be spent on things like receptions for foreign dignitaries or postcards about town hall meetings but jim moran defends the spending on staff salaries. >> we don't pay our staff nearly enough. i'm constantly losing people to the private sector who get three, four, sometimes five times what i can pay them. >> reporter: another 4 million will go to consultants and some money will be spent on improvements at the rayburn and cannon office buildings. they have recently had problems with falling chunks of marble. you may notice an extra clean smell on metro. they are giving them a cleaning to prevent the spreading of the flu. metro is encouraging you to cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze and to wash your hands frequently. starting today, people in virginia will be able to catch

a ride on amtrak to the northeast. the trains northeast corridor service is expanding from the district to lynchburg. the line runs along route 29. police are asking for help in locating two men who attempted to lure three children to their truck. it happened 6:45 last night at fair lawn avenue in laurel. the children were playing outside when a man called them to his truck. one of the mothers happened to be outside and yelled for the children to come to her.

quarter main break led to tieups this morning. it happened on queens chapel road in hyattsville. alex trevino reports. >> reporter: we can blame this mess on a water main break this morning. washington suburban sanitary commission spokesperson lynn riggins says the small pipe that connects the water main to the fire hydrant broke. >> along queens chapel, they expect it to be in 1933 and without being able to dig down and see what the problem is, it is a safe guess that aging infrastructure and old pipe is certainly a possible cause at this point. >> reporter: the rupture caused a small amount of damage to the road and sidewalk in this area. wssc turned off the water. 17 customers are without of service and fernando delco had to be evacuated after water filled his basement. >> we haven't slept since 2:00 a.m. this morning. that's the first time my wife

heard a popping noise and thought it was a heavy rain and she looked up in the window and there was floodwater on the driveway. and we called up wssc right away. >> fire and rescue crews are doing the best they can to help the families, but this has become more of a traffic issue than anything. lynn riggins says this part of queens chapel will be restricted to a mile a little longer. i'm alex trevino, 9 news now and wusa9.com. fairfax county police are searching for two men who robbed and stabbed a men outside of the springfield mall. police say the victim was sitting outside of the mall when two young men walked up and demanded he hand over his wallet. he did and one robber stabbed the shopper. he was rushed to the hospital and is now recovering. here's a look at something happening in our region. maryland's speed camera law is in affect now. some of the first new cameras

are going up in highway construction zones in an effort to keep workers safe. on i-95 in laurel, electronic signs will warn drivers before camera sites. another look at new laws taking affect today. you can no longer send a text message behind the wheel. a ticket will cost $500. teenagers must be 16 1/2 years old to get a provisional license and no one will get a full license until they are 18. and any u.s. or maryland flags bought with state money and displayed on state property must be made this the united states. right now the united states and other world powers are meeting to try to convince iran to freeze the nuclear program. it is the first time the u.s. and iran have held face-to-face talks in 30 years. elizabeth palmer reports from geneva. >> reporter: diplomates began to arrive mid-morning at the

a dramatic rescue was caught on tape in the bronx. a good samaritan is credited with saving a child's life after he helped firefighters pull the victim out of a burning building. this happened yesterday. the man ran up the fire escape and brought the boy down safely. both the little boy and his hero are being treated for smoke inhalation and are expected to be okay. two former redskins players are responding to criticism they received about the operation of their nonprofit program. art monk and charles mann are the founders of the good samaritan foundation, a program that works with at-risk youth.

the article in the city paper says they have not made good on promises they delivered to health children. >> we ran out of funding. we -- no one was making anymore donations to us and the bank wouldn't forward us anymore cash so our board and the people close to our foundation, we sat down, got together and decided we had tole is the building. it's not something we wanted to do but we had to in order to keep the program alive. >> reporter: monk say they are still in debt and using their own money to fund the program, which has since changed its name from the good samaritan foundation to the youth power center. despite the claims of the city paper, the men say they provide tutoring and mentoring programs to more than 200 children a year. it's the end of the road for saturn now that penske has dog called off talks to buy the

captain sullenberger is back in the pilot seat. the man who steered usa airways plane to a miraculous landing in he hudson river is flying the same route for the first time since he flew the route in january. >> the hero pilot who orchestrated the miracle on the hudson is flying again. >> it's good to be back at work. >> reporter: nearly nine months after he safely landed the disabled u.s. airways jet on new york's hudson river, he reunited with his co-pilot, first officer jeffrey skyles. they flew from new york to charlotte together this morning. >> you were with me over the hudson and you have my -- eternal gratitude for your skill and courage. >> passengers were happy to learn that sullenberger was at the cockpit. this afternoon they are sky -- flying from new york to

charlotte. the same route they were taking when geese knocked out both engines and brought the plane down with 155 people on board. word that sullenberger is back in the cockpit is creating a buzz and passengers who flew with him this morning said they felt a bit safer. >> always felt safer flying u.s. air since i heard what happened in the hudson river and they employed competent people. >> reporter: while he is getting a hero's welcome back he struggled after the miracle landing, the suffered from insomnia and post traumatic stress and wrote a book about it. he has been getting flight training since april and he says he is ready to fly again. drew levinson, cbs news, new york. an amazing story. not a bad day to fly. >> not at all. >> good visibility. the winds have died down from yesterday. and, you know, must be good for him to get back in and have a

be slighter warmer than that. temperatures are slightly up. morning sunshine with increasing clouds in the afternoon. high temperatures in the mid- 70s. south winds 10 to 15. looks like a good way to finish out the week. look at the temperatures from this morning. 51 on the bay in annapolis. andrews to 45. 37 in manassas. one of the cooler readings we saw all morning. 41 at the air park. martinsburg, winchester, leesburg, middle 40s. one of the coolest nights all season and right now with sunshine and a couple of clouds out there, we are as warm as 62 in fredericksburg. winchester and culpeper 61. pushing 60 on the bay in annapolis. over to cambridge as well 61 and in washington, we have a lot of sunshine this morning. we will put it in motion over the last few hours and you will see some patchy clouds from time to time but we have a temperature of 59 degrees with a west wind at five. dew point is only 40. the air is really dry and the sun angle is not as high as wit

us. that's why we will struggle to get now in the upper 60s. here we go. storm system pulling away. northernly winds behind it. as high pressure builds in, that's one reason our winds are diminishing. to the west there's some clouds and showers and another frontal boundary. that guy is coming for late friday in to saturday. here we go with microcast nine. no problems today. as we head to the overnight, though. still fairly quiet. tomorrow, though. we could see an early shower across western maryland. could even make it over to charlestown. during the day on friday, i think we will be okay with more clouds and maybe a late shower. saturday morning, though, you notice a few showers around here. i'm hopeful this will keep moving and again on saturday afternoon looking better than saturday morning. there's the seven day forecast. so i have lowered temperatures 67 for this afternoon. 74 tomorrow with maybe some late showers. better chance tomorrow night in to saturday morning. by sunday, you know, for the
