united states. and passengers from 14 nations will be subject to particularly intense screenings. tara mergener is this washington with details. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. well, these international travelers will be facing new scrutiny now. the tsa calls it a major step forward. starting came, all travelers who want to get into the u.s. will have to play by tough new security rules. but people flying from nations considered to be sponsors of terrorism or other countries of interest will see the biggest changes. mandatory full body pat-downs, carry-out searches and body scans are part of the latest ways of enhanced procedures. at least 14 countries are on the list, nearly all are muslim. philadelphia residents alex and nica went through ramped up measures on their flight from belgium sunday but weren't impressed. >> they looked through my bag and they missed one bag, so sort of felt very artificial. >> reporter: the new guide lines come more than a week after a

man allegedly tried to blow up a u.s.-bound plane on christmas day. airports around the world have been on alert ever since. another security breach just last night forced one. country's busiest airports to come to a complete stand still. >> we were simply told to vacate the area and to move upstairs. >> reporter: flights were grounded for areas at new york's jersey airport after a man slipped past security by entering through a check point exit. thousands of passengers had to be rescreened, including sergio who had just boarded his flight when he was told to get off. >> they fwhouns that had we had to go through security, so we went back to the gate and then we ended up here. >> despite a six hour lockdown, travelers were tired, but some didn't mind the delay. >> security doesn't worry me. the more the better. >> reporter: that's the attitude airport officials hope more people will have as they continue to try to keep travelers safe. and president obama will be meeting with homeland security

officials tomorrow in the white house situation room. >> as far as that incident at newark airport, have they found the person of interest that set off the alarm? >> reporter: as far as we know, they have not found him. now, authorities are scouring surveillance tapes, but so far they have not been able to identify or apprehend him. >> all right, tara mergener in washington. thanks. there is word this morning that a roadside bomb killed four american service members in afghanistan. the bomb exploded sunday in the southern part of the country. they are the first u.s. casualties due to enemy action in afghanistan this year. in a separate incident, a british soldier was also killed on sunday. the u.s. embassy in yemen will remain closed today. the american and britd tesch embassies there were closed sunday following increased threats from al qaeda. kimberly dozier reports. >> reporter: the u.s. embassy stayed closed sunday after the new year's holiday because of ongoing fierce of an imminent al qaeda attack. the deputy national security adviser confirmed there was an

active threat. >> there is. al qaeda has several hundred members in yemen and they've grown in strength. >> reporter: senior officials say they believe air strikes on christmas eve headed off a suicide bombing attack on the embassy planned for christmas day. the december 24th joint u.s. yemeni strikes hit targets including two al qaeda training camps. the u.s. and britain have ramped up training of forces and the pentagon is doubling the $70 million it already spend there is in aid. the top american commander of the region, general david petraeus, visited yemen's capital saturday to discuss ongoing cooperation. yemen has sent more forces into al qaeda target areas, but its its military is overstretched, fighting three wars against al qaeda, the arabian peninsula, a shiite rebelian in the north and a group in the south. combine that with upwards of 35% unemployment and an underaged population where half are uneducated and live on less than

$2 a day, and you have what diplomats call a near failed state and a foot hold for islamic extremist movements. that's why republicans have criticized the return of guantanamo detainees to yemen. one of the problems on the ground is that the qua made any oig government ochl cuts deals with its enemies. on one of the reasons for the increased funding is to keep the pressure on the yemeni government to keep the pressure on america's enemies. kimberly dozier, cbss new, the white house. those five measures suspected of plotting attacks in pakistan are due in court take. the five young muslim men are from the washington, d.c. area. they were arrested in december carrying a map of an area near a nuclear power facility. police say they'll seek life sentences on terror charges, but the men are expected to be deported back to the u.s. tomorrow president obama meets with his security advisers to review events that led up to the detroit airline attack.

multiple officers. bob orr reports. >> reporter: the cold blooded killing of four seattle police officers last november is the worth police shooting in washington state history. four officers gunned down at a coffee shop as they huddled over their laptops. but that spree is just the latest in a deadly year in which police have been repeatedly ambushed. numbers show at least 48 officers were killed by gun mis-2009. up from 38 the year before. more than a dozen deaths came in cluster shootings. in march, four officers were killed in oakland in a shoot-out that gap with a routine traffic stop. two weeks later, three pittsburgh police officers answering a domestic dispute were shot and killed by a gufrp man wielding ans a sault rifle and wearing a bulletproof vest. to fight back, police are increasingly trading in handguns for assault rifles. a miami officer now packs ap-ar 15 to counter the heavy fire power of gangs he encounters on
