>> the redskins do a lot of shocking things. this is not one of them. zoran firing has been a done deal for months. this morning it became official. i want to show you the scene this morning. around 2:15 the team returned from san diego. teams went into the building and jim zoran pulled out ending his 12-20 record. it marks the end to one of the most stunning promotions. he was named the offensive coordinator. 15 days later he was promoted to be this team's head coach. >> i am very excited about being the redskins head football coach. that is quite miraculous for me to even say. >> reporter: an that say the

coach famously fumbled his teams colors. >> they will be all colored up in maroon and black and yellow. >> let's have somebody break it down, man. >> hip, hip. >> that ray. >> washington fell into a 2-6 slide into the second half of that debut season. >> i just feel like the worst coach in america. >> reporter: the off season brought hope. 2009 began the way 2008 ended. >> we have high expectations and losing creates thoughts. >> reporter: the theory many believed is the second year of

the five year contract would be his last, despite unwaivering support from his players. >> it is definitely not one person. >> after an embarrassing loss management no longer believed his ability to run the offense. stripping him of the duties and hiring lewis who went to calling the plays. some of the guys weren't sure who he was. >> he accepted the decision but he never liked it. >> if it is really the play calling i'm ready to try it. >> they gave him an endorsement for the remainder of the season. new general manager was noncommittal about zoran's long- term prospect. >> we will discuss the future. >> reporter: but he no longer

redskins great, ryan mitchell. ryan, when allen was first named in his position you were one of the first to talk about the future. what are you hearing now? >> still hearing the same thing, mike would be the coach. i think a lot of people may be a little concerned and are thinking he may try to shock us. if they don't hire him it would be a shock. >> and why should he be the number one on people's list? >> i guess he is number one because he has won two super bowls. he has the best resume out there. coming to this job, no one is going to allow them to go out and be the decision maker. dan is the reason for as much

as this off season as jim zoran is. if they allow the coach to do his job that coach can be successful. >> what was so interesting, whether he would be out today or even last night, looking at turner, another one of the coaches for the washington redskins, who doesn't have the kind of success he had in his previous job. >> i think zoran is say there is another side. turner has proven it and sitting out. he was given to do a job he has no experience at. he was a quarterback coach and never called a play in his life. they elevate him and they had him doing too many things.

he didn't have a good team. he was kind of set up in a way. >> and before i let you go, what's going to happen to some of the other people that were support staff. lewis was with brought in to call the plays. what about his defensive coordinator? who stays in the bruce allen area? >> i think shanahan brings in his own guys. simmer is a guy who has been a defensive coordinator. they tell me mitchell has accepted the head coaches job down in baton rouge. going back home to our hometown. >> that's right. >> and i think they will be out looking for a lot of jobs.

to politics. national security was another reason for not closing guantanamo bay and not sending some back to where this plot was hatched. >> yes. this last year the president wanted to focus on the health care, climate change. this has pushed into the front burner. everyone wants to win. national security has been one of the top issues. it has proven favorable. they will try to capitalize on that. there is always a political opportunity here. >> and what is interesting is during the campaign the democrats as a party seem to answer everything the republicans threw at them.

now that the obama administration is in office the white house don't seem to have strong answers for everything that is at them. >> and as they have been so focused on health care reform i don't want to say they have lost focus, but i wouldn't say they have been talking a lot about it. it hasn't been on their top priority list in terms of congressional and white house action. >> uh-huh. >> that is going to change. i think you'll see when congress comes back to town and the house comes back the president is back, he will meet with his intelligence team tomorrow. we'll hear a lot more about it. i don't think the focus is lost for long. >> and a lot of members are influx in their difference. >> you bet. this will be a pretty important election. they are looking to pick up

and they fired zorn. on the phone is andy. even if he had won the game last night, would we still be talking about zorn being fired today? >> yeah, i think he was fired probably in september. when they lost to the lions it was pretty much his run. it would take a miraculous turn around for him to keep his job. >> and the thing about it is we were talking about it earlier that this really was not his making just bad coaching, it was the circumstances that even put him into the head coaching position. >> yeah, the hiring itself was bizarre to begin with.

you have got to remember when the redskins hired jim zorn they hired him as an offensive coordinator. he made arrangements and for whatever reason decided, well, you know, maybe zorn can be ahead coach. it was clear after half of the season he couldn't be. >> and looking at this team and just how everything is made up in the management sense, whether it is shanahan or somebody else, what can make a coach successful here? turner was gone and now he is coaching the 13-3 san diego chargers. >> i don't know what can be expected. i think the big thing about this organization that they have done is they have done

great addition by subtraction. he made moves that snider wanted him to make. zorn was a pliable head coach. he wanted to have good strong football people and have the background to stand up. that will be the difference moving forward. >> when do you think we'll hear who the new head coach will be? >> it will be surprised if it's not shanahan and if it doesn't happen today. >> okay. thank you very much for being with us. we'll be right back.
